DC Relaunching Everything? - Part 10

Scandal, Knockout, Renee Montoya, Batwoman, Maggie Sawyer, Lightning Lass, Shrinking Violet, Sarah Rainmaker, Grace Choi, Thunder, Holly Robinson....DC does have a handful to where you can spare at least one to have a meaningful death.

Of those you mentioned here, six have been erased from continuity and two are in a book that's getting cancelled this month so won't be appearing anymore. And barely appeared in that comic to begin with

So from this month on DC has a total of four lesbian characters appearing across the 52 titles they publish right now

The tiny number of lesbian characters in the DCU isnt even nearly enough and i don't want ANY of them to ever be killed off for any reason

Though even if DC had a thousand lesbian characters I still wouldn't want any lgbt characters to be kiilled off. They're the only kind of characters that I care about reading and I want to see more of them in comics, not less

I haven't been reading Batwoman for a while, so maybe my info is out of date, but killing the love interest is so played out at this point I think it would be much more poignant to have Maggie leave Kate over the complications created by her double life. Kate is troubled, that affects a relationship.

That's a pretty common cliche as well (for Bruce Wayne) but still... Comics need to look really closely at how they treat death. It's become out of whack. Matt Fraction once said that death for superheroes isn't about dying, really, it's about escaping death--which I think is interesting, but overplayed. It loses meaning when you do it every week.

Meanwhile, for supporting characters like Maggie (or even Damian, to an extent) it's become a lazy crutch for making sure things stay the same (characters remain unattached, families don't grow, etc.) and to fuel the next round of angst in the stories. You can accomplish these things more subtly than by taking an axe to characters. Death is an important tool in fiction, but, come on, you've got a whole toolbox.

I don't want Maggie to die or to leave Kate

I want them to stay together

Happy lesbian and gay couples are the kind of couples I want to read about in comics. The only kind of couples I want to read about

I don't want the cliché 'Lesbian/gay relationships always end in heartbreak or death' to happen to Kate and Maggie. I want them to be together and stay together :hrt:

Well, I didn't want Scott and Jean to break up and I didn't want Peter and MJ to break up. You should have to suffer like the rest of us :argh:

But you have tons of other couples like them to read about

Kate and Maggie are the only lesbian couple I've got to read about in comics right now

And I don't want them taken away from me :argh:

Batgirl has become dreadfully boring and it makes me sad to see Gail Simone quickly becoming a one trick pony with her books because she used to be one of my favorite writers.

I've been liking her run more since the Knightfall arc personally :)

I am loving her on the Movement right now as well I'm really digging that book

Also not DC but her Red Sonja is off to a good start

But I don't care about those other couples! Actually, I'm struggling to think of any other couples off the top of my head

I apparently care that little about the rest of them.

Every relationship in comics ends in heartbreak. Moreover, Kate's a Bat-character, it will end in heartbreak.

Batwoman's kinda lucky right now. The only other hero in a relationship I can think of is Aquaman with Mera.

DC still owns them and when they decide to put them in somewhere, they can just insert them in plain and simple.

But that is soooooo boring. When I read comics, I want to read it all. Both gay and straight relationships can be interestingly written and they can both be horribly written as well. I mean hell, if I only read comics about people who were just like me I would just write a book about myself.

I've been liking her run more since the Knightfall arc personally :)
I'm going to take a guess because of the transgendered person who was horribly introduced in the book. Gail Simone has become a god damn one trick pony with the way she writes LGBT characters and it's a damn shame because she used to be one of the best.

I am loving her on the Movement right now as well I'm really digging that book
Why would anyone want to check out an Occupy Wall Street style mainstream comic book?

Flash is with Patty Spivot, Wonder Woman and Superman are dating, Green Lantern has an on/off relationship with Carol Ferris.

I was thinking more their designated other (Lois, Iris). Green Lantern's is in off mode for now.

I don't think it's boring personally

I always find lesbian and gay relationships interesting and enjoyable to read about as long as their relationship and their sexuality are both portrayed positively

And I'm only interested in reading about same sex couples. Straight couples in fiction hold no interest or appeal to me so I do only buy comics about characters that are lgbt. As a lesbian woman that's what I want to read about

I'm going to take a guess because of the transgendered person

Yes her including a transgender woman in the cast is why I'm buying and enjoying Batgirl right now

Gail Simone has become a god damn one trick pony with the way she writes LGBT characters and it's a damn shame because she used to be one of the best.

The fact that she includes lgbt characters in her comics is the reason I buy and enjoy her work

If she didn't include lgbt characters in it I would not bother buying any of it as I don't spend my money on any comics that don't have lgbt characters in the cast

Comics about only straight characters are of no interest to me as I have no desire to read about such characters

I hope that Gail continues to include many more lgbt heroes and supporting characters in her work because the DCU desperately needs them

Why would anyone want to check out an Occupy Wall Street style mainstream comic book?

I'm enjoying it

I love that Sarah Rainmaker is back in it and I am loving Virtue so far as well :hrt:

Reading exclusively the same thing is just flat out boring. Anything would be boring if you just focus on the same thing. Playing video games would be boring if I just stuck to Metal Gear Solid or watching movies would be boring if I just stuck to watching blacksploitation movies.

I understand that, but for someone who calls for more diversity, you're essentially saying that you don't want to see it.

The way Simone introduced that character was an absolute joke. I mean seriously, it's as if your blinders towards LGBT themes have prevented you from dissecting what is good (Batwoman) and what is bad (Batgirl) or even what the meaning of these stories are (like how you totally missed the point with the ending of Secret Six).

The fact that she includes lgbt characters in her comics is the reason I buy and enjoy her work

The problem with Simone now is that she treats LGBT characters as a gimmick. Instead of actually reflecting diversity, Simone just throws gay people in her comics now with absolutely no substance or point at all and treats it as if it's a big deal. And it's a damn shame because instead of being a one-trick pony, she used to be one of the best writers in portraying LGBT characters.

I hope that Gail continues to include many more lgbt heroes and supporting characters in her work because the DCU desperately needs them
How about Simone adds in some other groups like black people or anything else. Or just stop treating gay people as a gimmick and just treat them as regular people.

Shouldn't story quality trump everything? Strong characters drive great stories, and it shouldn't matter what color, gender, or sexuality they are (or at least that shouldn't be the defining characteristic).

Don't even try to have a discussion with Mysti about this. For someone who says she's all about equality for LGBT people, I find her views terribly sexist.

Hippie, she is a lost cause. Don't waste your time! Sound advice.

I know, maybe it's just that I've become so frustrated that one of my favorite writers has degraded into a complete and utter joke and Mysti is just enabling such things.

Hey man take solace in the fact that Birds of Prey (the good volume) and Secret Six are still in your collection for you to re-read at any given time. I loved her old **** too but she's not the first good writer to turn to crap and she won't be the last. Sometimes that's a consequence of the industry and we just have to deal and move on as fans. Me personally? I dropped Batgirl after the awful first arc and never looked back, bad comics are bad comics and those few issues weren't even a patch on the worst of the Stephanie Brown or Cassandra Cain Batgirl comics.

I dropped Batgirl after the first issue's god-awful dialogue. It was the first thing of Simone's I'd ever read, and no matter how many people say her other stuff is good I can't bring myself to try it now.

Well that's just sexist. :o

What do you guys think of the Lobo news? Everyone seems to be losing their ****. But as far as I can tell, the new Lobo is going to be the villain and will probably end up staring at his own intestines by the end of his first appearance. Or not. So I'll wait until the Villains Month issue to form an opinion.

And the Twilight comparisons are kind of... Really really stupid. I don't recall anyone with white skin, armor, chain weapons, and laser guns in the trailers for the Twilight movies. But I guess that, along with "emo" and "hipster" are just words people resort to when they dislike something and don't feel like writing a whole sentence.

His look is ******ed as all ****, Lobo is a product of the 90's and a beloved product of the 90's that needed no change. I have a huge amount of love for Lobo from STAS and any change to that pretty much sours me on this new Lobo.
