DC Relaunching Everything? - Part 3

LOL. Marvel wouldn't lead the industry forever. they've had a good 10 years, but it doesn't mean DC would never catch up.

I think DC will gain a good 200-500 Thousand readers if the advertise right.

No chance of that happening.
Comics haven't had those types of numbers since the 1950's-1960s. And that was when there was just TV and books to compete with.

Nowadays, there's the internet, ipods, ipads, cell phones, and YouTube, and video games to compete with. Comics are lucky they continue to get 50,000-75,000 sales up against that competition.

How is DC gonna get 500k sales when comics currently aren't even stocked in retailers outside of comics shops and some bookstoes? When they aren't sold in places like Wal-mart, Target, supermarkets, drugstores and Mom & pop stores anymore?

Along with that distribution plan, What's even crazier is the plan to target 18-24 year olds as the crop of "new readers". A brilliant move by DC until you realize
2000 was the start of the second biggest baby boom in the U.S. since post World War II. Over the past ten years twenty million kids are going to be turning ten and eleven years old and becoming independent readers. This is the perfect audience to target comics towards. Why? It's an audience that's going to grow over the next 20-30 years.

But editiorial at the comics houses are too busy focusing on a small group of older readers to see the upcoming group of new younger readers with money burning a hole in their pocket from parents and granpdparents. Well Disney Nickelodeon, Apple and WWE will continue to reap those billions of dollars while DC relaunches again in another year or so.

DC can run all the commercials on TV it wants, but if no one can FIND a comic in a retail outlet, no one is going to CARE about a new #1, new costume or anything else.

even though I have doubts about the relaunch, I'm definitely going to give it a chance.

is it going to make me a regular comic reader? no.......probably not. but I'll certainly check out the 1st few issues.

plus, it's always nice to have the opportunity to pick up the #1 issue of something.....lol

Actually it's been like a good 25 years but whatever.

My mistake. Been 17 years since I looked at the inside of a comic at that annual sales notice.

But I'd have to say most of the comic book industry is out of touch with the real world and doesn't know what they need to do to get new readers. Sad part is they don't see the crop of 20 million potential new younger readers staring them in the face.

looks like there will be a protest at comic con about this

And I'm sure everyone attending will raise an eyebrow at the 3 people who would actually take the time out of their day to do that.

actually the facebook page is showing 150 people....but im sure people will look at them as uber nerds...and not in a good way

Haha, 200,000-500,000 regular readers. You have just got to love that optimism. Man, youth, and how fleeting it is.

When the guy in the 100% accurate Kyle Rayner costume shakes his head at you, you got problems. :woot:

you know at that point someone should just give up comics and become mainstream

Nah it's been about 20 plus years. Even when they went bankrupt they were doing better than DC. The occasional Death of Superman/Wedding/Breaking of the Bat event not withstanding. 90's X-Men dominated all.

They'll have one good month. Maybe two.

I dunno, I do think that DC will actually start to top Marvel in 2012. DC has filled their top tier books (Justice League, Batman, Superman, Action Comics, and Green Lantern) with top notch talent that will be guaranteed top 10 sellers. And unlike the past in which DC's middle tier (and even some of their top tier) books have languished, DC is also trying to get high end talent to fill in the gaps with Gail Simone and Ethan van Sciver on Firestorm, Geoff Johns on Aquaman, Brian Azzarello on Wonder Woman, Dan Jurgens on Justice League International, Gail Simone of Batgirl, Kyle Higgins on Nightwing, the various Green Lantern books, Scott Snyder on Swamp Thing, etc. It looks like DC is trying to look at the core root of why their middle tier books have been languishing and are indeed trying to fix it.

I think that current readers are going to be attracted to those creative teams and those books are going to benefit from them.

By throwing out 52 books, more than half of which will not meet their 6 and done requirement?

I wouldn't count on it.

I did read somewhere about Marvel leading the industry only in 2000. You can't really lead the industry with 25% market share which Marvel had in 1999.
Perhaps i misread the article.

The crash nearly killed Marvel. Mainly because it was independent. DC on the other hand was owned by Warner Brothers. So they were okay no matter how little they sold, which was less than Marvel.

I think the crash also hurt Marvel because Marvel dabbled into other businesses that also crashed at the same time such as trading cards, comic distribution, crappy licensing deals, etc. Even though DC sold less than Marvel, DC seemed to be run better than Marvel. Sorta like how even though GM sold more, Ford was more competently managed and survived as GM declared bankruptcy.

I agree actually. I think they're going to really give Marvel a run for their money and even pass them this year, at least for a while. Like the relaunch or not, it's drawing in attention and I've heard a lot of people say "eh, I'll give the first few issues a shot." With the creative teams they have lined up, that might be all that's needed to hook some readers.

I currently read all 3 Green Lantern books, Batman Incorporated, and Batman & Robin. I was reading Batgirl but dropped it and was debating on dropping the Green Lantern line as well.

Come September I will be buying all 4 Green Lantern books, Batman, Batman & Robin, Justice League, and possibly Swamp Thing and Red Hood & the Outlaws. And I will be picking up Batman Incorporated "Season 2" in January. So I will likely be doubling my DC buying, and if they're good I'll likely drop Marvel books to afford it.

Um.. first off I'm gonna say the editing where they try to emulate a comic book page flip type feel was annoying especially when they did it in the middle of one person talking when there's no need for that type of transition.

Second whoever thought that there needed to be not one but two shots focused on Teen Titans (and most centrally Superboy's weird piece of paper on the back of his shirt) should be shot.

Third its disconcerting that of the 52 titles they only really pushed Justice League in this piece, a title that will probably sell like hotcakes no matter what, with little to no mention of other titles or characters.

I thought it was amazing. this is the kind of marketing that DC needs to put themselves on top.
