DC Relaunching Everything? - Part 8

I've tried to read Vic's 80s comics, but the first volume is out of print and hard to get for less than 30 bucks. Which is weird, since all of the subsequent volumes aren't hard to get at all.

So my only real exposure to comics Vic is 52, which was awesome.

What market is that? The highest selling books are the event books that cross over all the continuity. I don't think Superman Earth-1 was exactly flying off the shelves.

Actually, it was. DC reported huge success with that book, it seemed to surprise even them.

The New 52 has been a big success for DC. It's not going to change back. There's really no question about that.

Pretty much all Phatman says is that they're about to go to the old universe. It makes me sad.

We have gotten a lot of good storied from the reboot. It just seems like we could've gotten these stories without the reboot happening. Batman, Animal Man and Swamp Thing are my favorite 3 of the new 52. They could have easily been done in the old continuity.

They're not gonna go back. They'll start a new one. There is no going back.

Not only that but I think that some changes should stay.

What DC should do IMO is see what changes do work and which ones don't and get rid of the ones that don't.

so bascially, they should do what they already do every time they reboot continuity.

It wouldn't cause problems if they didn't do it every 10 years.

But they do, and they will.

The problem for me is that, continuity doesn't really mean anything to these people anymore. Between the retconns, and the soft reboots, everything that a character was is thrown out the window damn near whenever a new writer comes on. Character development is temporary at best. It's not just DC either. I don't know.....I think I'm done with the big 2 as far as Super heroes are concerned.

well, in a medium that relies on the same characters existing for 60+ years, character development is going to be shoddy. Character development relies on a character being different by the end of a story. But these stories never end.

You can only build a character so much before it has to be torn down again.

Exactly. Maybe they should. Maybe we should be on our 4th Batman by now. Maybe we should have found out that Supes is functionally Immortal and Lois and all his friends have already died and he's gotta deal with that s**t.

Well that wouldn't be a very good fiscal decision. :o

edit: posted that before you edited.

I'm just sayin'. How about moving forward, not back.

I don't think many people would read Batman stories if Batman weren't Bruce. Maybe if it were Dick. But past that? I doubt it.

Yes; very astute.
I guess I would find the reinterpretations more palatable if not for the sucky redesigns. I'll still argue that some things need not change to enable creators to write more contemporary stories.

Maybe. Maybe not. We'll never know for sure cuz they'll never have the balls to do it.

Had they never decided to go the reboot path, or the sliding timeline way, there's a good chance people would have simply kept following along. Like a soap opera. Characters get old. They die. (A few times.) New ones come on, they keep going.

I'm inclined to agree.

Well, I think we can all agree that they should keep the good stuff and chuck the bad stuff.

The problem is that they keep doing it, and somehow keep ending up with just as much bad as good.

Not to mention the fact that "good stuff" is subjective. That when they start throwing out the "bad stuff", they might throw out some of the "good stuff" you liked.

They also care more about what makes them money than what's good.

People read a lot of ****** comics, which makes them think it's good.

Meaning Batwoman will get thrown out, but everything in Detective will be the basis of Batman for the next 10 years. :o

well snyder said at C2E2 that he's a big fan of tony daniel's batman work and that they're going to be closely intertwining their books after the court of owls
