What kind of stuff did he say about it? I was debating on dropping it but have been holding out.

Well, he talked about what their new base of operations would be, which sounded really cool to me.

The House of Mystery

And Lemire also stated heavily in the interview that he spoke heavily with Johns about his plans for the Justice League book and Lemire planned on focusing on the Justice League part of the team instead of showing how "dark" they are.

Yeah, for some reason I don't really have any interest in the whole concept of JL Dark, but I can't help but be interested in what Lemire's going to do with them.

I dropped JL Dark a couple months ago. Nothing about it interested me, which is weird given that I like Constantine and Madame Xanadu a lot from their Vertigo series. But they both feel a bit off in JLD, Xanadu especially. Actually, Xanadu feels like an entirely different character.

She seems like kind of a jerk in the new DCU :csad:

From MTV:
EXCLUSIVE! DC Comics Launches Brand New 'He-Man and the Masters of The Universe' Comic From Writer James Robinson
Alex Zalben said:
Get ready, He-Man fans: DC Comics is getting ready to launch a brand new take on the Masters of the Universe this July, in a six issue comic book series written by James Robinson, with pencils by Phillip Tan and inks from Ruy Jose. And that's not the end of the surprises... As the series starts, the evil Skeletor has already won!

That's right: the skull faced arch-enemy of He-Man has figured out a way to rewrite the reality of Eternia, casting himself as the ruler of Castle Grayskull, and our heroes - including He-Man - as regular peasants with no memory of their previous life. And while simple woodsman Adam may dream of wielding a massive sword, and fighting in battles, he thinks they're just dreams. That is, until a mysterious sorceress approaches him, and sends him on an epic journey to save all of Eternia.

To find out more, we chatted with Robinson about where the series is going, if this is just the tip of the iceberg for the Masters of the Universe, and whether a certain fan favorite (well, us favorite) will return:

MTV Geek: Why Masters of The Universe? I think most people nowadays know it from a somewhat cheesy cartoon, and a somewhat cheesier movie - what draws you to the property? Is it a chance to really go back and reinvent from an almost blank slate, in a way?

James Robinson: I agree to some people Masters of the Universe is considered a cheesy cartoon. However, I know for a fact that a certain generation of people, who grew up at the right time, hold genuine affection for Masters of the Universe. The challenge is to write something that raises the standard for the series, with a cool, modern story that nevertheless honors the fans of the animated series and toy line.

Geek: How much reinvention versus continuation are we going to see in the book? It seems, like a lot of these '80s properties, your approach is a way of honoring the old fans, while allowing an easy access point for new ones.

JR: As I say, that's the challenge. Let's just say I've come up with a series concept that introduces the line of characters to new readers in what I hope is a fresh, dynamic and compelling way while honoring what the series has been prior.

Geek: Let's talk about the characters... What's going on with Adam? He's in a pretty interesting place when this all starts.

JR: Adam is in a place where he really has to reconnect with what it means to be a Master of the Universe. It's his odyssey, much like the Greek myth in fact, that is the backbone of this series.

Geek: Skeletor walks the line between terrifying, and very, very silly... What are you going for here? What's his motivation, and how will he play throughout the series?

JR: He's terrifying. Period. The silly era is done and gone. Phillip and I are taking great pains to make Skeletor, who is after all a barbarian warrior with a skull face, into a horrifying and worthy foe for He-Man. As to motivation, much like before he wants it all. Eternia. Castle Greyskull. Adam's head on a plate. Everything. He's just going to be much more ruthless in how he goes about getting it.

Geek: There's also a "mysterious sorceress" who kicks off the proceedings. Is she someone we've met before? What game is she playing? Oh, and she's She-Ra, right? Right???

JR: Not She-Ra I'm afraid. Although the sorceress is very important to Adam's odyssey taking shape.

Geek: This is a bit of personal question, but are we going to see Orko in this series? I don't want to brag, but I won a costume contest dressed as him when I was seven.

JR: Congratulations! Yes, there is a possibility you'll see Orko by the end of the series.

Geek: What other characters are we going to see popping up? And was there anyone you weren't able to fit in?

JR: Yeah, Orko until you mentioned him. Apart from that, no, I'm going to try and get every character in, if only in our epic climax.

Geek: You have Philip Tan on pencils, and he's clearly been doing some fabulous fantasy work on Hawkman - if you've seen any of it yet, what's his work like here? What does he bring to the project?

JR: Truthfully, I haven't seen the work yet, however based in Philip's work on Batman & Robin, Green Lantern and Hawkman, he'll brings a darkness and mood, coupled with a dynamic storytelling that will definitely add a unique quality to this Masters of the Universe relaunch.

Geek: This may be a little too literal, but I've always wondered why they were called "Masters of the UNIVERSE," when they only hung out on Eternia - are we going to see any exploration of places beyond Eternia in this series, or more of a fleshing out of that side of the concept?

JR: A little too literal? Boy that's an understatement. Seriously though, that's a good question and one that deserves it's own arc. However that isn't this arc, which is more concerned with reintroducing the Masters of the Universe and the world of Eternia to a new generation.

Geek: ...And this may be above your pay-grade, but I imagine these comics are somewhat a testing ground for the franchise, to see if it can be reinvented for TV, action figures, movies, etc... Has that been part of the discussion at all? And when you've been writing this, has your eye turned to that side of the business at all?

JR: Honestly I don't know. Mattel has been very supportive to my ideas, I do know that. I'm sure as a company they've got their eye on all their franchises for the best way to make the most of them. I know I would.

Geek: Just to wrap up, between finally revealing the life of The Shade on an epic, globe-trotting journey, creating a whole new world with Earth Two, and reinventing Masters of the Universe, are you going to want to write a nice, small character piece after this is all done? Or do you have even bigger plans?

JR: No, my plans are a couple of more character based ideas, although even those have some pretty epic brush strokes. Oh and I'm working on a novel, that I'm very happy with so far and will have done by the end of the year. Thanks for asking.
HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE #1 hits comic book stands from DC Comics in July!

Madame Xanadu is supposed to be a brand new character pretty much. This book and Demon Knights pretty much prove as much. They're starting all the magic based and supernatural characters from scratch it seems. Even Shade. Zatanna seems like a brand new character. Hell John Constantine didn't even know who Batman was. Milligan still writes him better than almost anybody else in the industry BTW. Even in a title that is under obvious editorial mandates.

It's obvious that it's one of the books who's characters have been rebooted. I'm open to that if a writer is given the ability to really world build with such a clean slate. Which was kind of why I was disappointed cause Milligan is built for this kind of stuff. It's what he excels at but he had no freedom to really cut loose (save for all that crazy multi June Moone suicide ****, as well as a storm of teeth that was cool and very much like Milligan) because it seems editorial has other things in mind.

I think Deadman and Dove is the only Pre-FP carry over from what I read. I dropped the book after the first arc but did read the last issue because I read I, Vampire. The artwork was really nice in it but it didn't feel like much. Still kinda underdeveloped though in certain respects though the astral plane scene was really neat. I guess Milligan coasted cause he's got Stormwatch to worry about now.

In any event I'm busy with supporting some of Lemire's other books. I'm especially most satisfied with Sweet Tooth as always but AM and Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. are also good enough for me as is. BTW if you're a fan of Frank's book Lemire wrote Men of War's final issue this month and it explores Frank and the G.I. Robot during WWII. It's good stuff.

I'm not really too crazy about his JLD ideas (except HoM as the headquarters; that's damn cool) but if he gets more freedom than Milligan got on the book I may check it out. It's cool that Andrew Bennett is joining at least because I have a feeling I, Vampire will be in the next wave of cancellations since it's so damn slept on.

I've got a horrible feeling that Robinson's Masters of the Universe book is going to be really grim and gory

I don't really see anything in that interview that indicates that. He wants to make a darker Skeletor. The movie and the last animated series had a darker Skeletor. I don't think he's going to drift too far off the fact that it's supposed to be a fantasy comic. Fantasy stories have always had dark and ruthless villains it's just going to be painting Skeletor more in that vein since there's more freedom here than with a cartoon.

With that said he hasn't written anything outside of The Shade (which has been an excellent maxi series so far) that I've enjoyed in the last decade. So I don't see myself exactly reading this either. Unless it gets some really stellar reviews or something.

If Prince Adam isn't wearing pink, I'm gonna burn every copy of that comic that I see. :argh:

I found the last Green Arrow arc ok but this arc is terrible.

I was intrigued by the promise of hawt blonde triplets in skintight costumes but even that wasn't enough to get me to buy it

Is it really that bad right now?

Wired reports that in July, DC Comics are launching a new 52 series, National Comics, a book that will switch the spotlight character every issue.

The first four will be Eternity, Madame X, Rose And Thorn, and Looker.

Jeff Lemire and Cully Hamner will create Eternity, which appears to be similar to Kid Eternity. They describe it;

This is the story of police coroner Christopher Freeman. After being given a second chance on life, he finds himself with the ability to resurrect the dead. Freeman uses his new ability to help those he resurrects to find their murderers and to gain closure, so they can continue to the other side.

I can’t imagine Rose And Thorn being written by anyone other than Gail Simone.

The other question, aside from how many new 52 books will launch in July, is how many will cancel.

After their eighth issues, six DC books came to an end. Mostly the lowest sellers, though Captain Atom survived where Hawk And Dove did not. Most observers predicted something similar to be announced on a semi-regular basis.

But I was told by internal DC sources that they are currently thinking about cancelling twelve titles. Not all at once, perhaps, but that’s the figure I was given.

The twelve lowest selling titles that have not been cancelled are, in highest selling order, Batwing, Hawkman, Deathstroke, Frankenstein Agent Of Shade, DC Universe Presents, Fury Of Firestorm, Resurrection Man, I Vampire, Grifter, Blue Beetle, Voodoo and Captain Atom. DC Comics declined to comment on this.

As before, sales won’t be the only factor, although it may be the largest. But National Comics seems a natural replacement for DC Universe Presents doesn’t it? In the way that Men Of War was replaced by GI Combat?

Hawkman, Deathstroke, DC Universe Presents, Firestorm, Grifter, Voodoo, Blue Beetle and Captain Atom could all go without anyone batting an eyelash.

Yep honestly don't care about any of those

It'll be a shame if Resurrection Man gets cancelled though I've been enjoying that. It's got an immortal being hunted by psycho angels and bad ass lesbian bounty hunters who work for a zombie

That's made of :awesome:

I'll be interested in checking out the Eternity story and Rose and Thorn if Simone is going to be writing it

Never heard of Madame X does anyone know who she is?

I'm betting Resurrection Man and I, Vampire lasts longer than some other titles due to their quality.

I hope so that book has been a lot of fun :)

Batwoman, Birds of Prey, Batgirl, Resurrection Man, Stormwatch, Demon Knights, Teen Titans, Frankenstein and Legion of Superheroes are the series that I want to last for a long long time

Voodoo, Captain Atom

I like these books and hope that along with I, Vampire and Resurrection Man they last a while. But I really doubt it. I definitely could see them all getting cancelled.

My lashes wouldn't bat for the ones in bold...and of course with Liefeld taking over 3 of the others they all got dropped as of issue 8.

Wait. DC added a new title in July...did they cancel anything?
