The Dark Knight Did anyone feel a J. Depp/Jack Sparrow vibe from joker?

there were times where the way he talked and moved was too much like a Depp character, most notably jack sparrow. i swear, if theres anyone to recast the joker with, its Depp. heath at times felt like a jack sparrow type character with his version of joker. the wierd movements and way of saying some things, his humour.

Does it depress you? To know just how alone you really are?

I don't think it's because people don't think Depp could do just as good as a job, it's probably because Ledger did such a fantastic job with the role no one really wants to see anyone else fill his shoes. No matter who the actor is.
Then they can kindly not watch the movie. Having more performances from this character doesn't change what Ledger did. If people want to stick with that depiction forever, then so be it. No need to ruin other people's enjoyment. I have no qualms with someone else filling the role, so as long they deliver a great performance.

No disrespect to Heath, but I don't want this role to die with him. That would just be absurd. I don't see the big deal. If Heath's Joker was a 10, and someone else comes in and is another 10, are people really gonna moan because now the top spot is being shared?

Imagine if someone like Depp did step into the role. Could you imagine how many Ledger vs. Depp threads there would be around here? Lol...scary.
You're gonna get comparisons no matter what. It's inevitable with a recurring role.

Do we really need to see the Joker again though? Will the story of BB3 not function without him? Was he not caught at the end of TDK? Since Nolan probably has one more Batman film left in him, I'd rather he use his time to develop another villain to reflect a new theme for the film.

The Joker is Batman's greatest villain, no doubt about it. But we don't see him in every Batman comic ever, do we? A third film can work fine without him. If he was still loose, then I would argue that loose end would need to be tied up. But that's not the case.

We don't really need anything. I'm talking purely from a fan perspective. If Joker doesn't return, I wouldn't be phased in the least? But would I love to see him again? No doubt.

Well WB doesn't exactly churn out movies every month, do they? The current trend seems to be that we get a new live-action Joker every 20 years or so. That's entirely too long for me. I can stand to wait a couple years so the character doesn't become overexposed, but Joker is someone that needs to stay in the limelight of the batfranchise.

Exactly, which is even more reason to move onto another villain since we have such a limited time to work with. Comics run monthly so you reach a point where you have no choice but to reuse villains again and again. For all we know, there could only be one more Batman film left in Nolan and I want him to use that time bringing us his take on another Batman villain.

I get what you're saying, the Joker is great and you want to see more of him. And I'm sure if you ask some people, they would want the Joker in every Batman movie. I'm from the school of less is more. I'd hate to see the Joker pop up in every other Batman movie, I enjoy the event feeling a Batman movie takes on when the Joker is in it. And I'd hate for that to be lost if we were kept being fed the Joker in every other Batman movie. Plus, I still want to see other Batman villains done justice.

Also, I liken this Joker to Hannibal Lecter of SOTL. Hannibal is one of the greatest villains of all time in such a limited amount of time in SOTL. But then we got more and more of him and the mystique and aura surrounding the character was just lost. Obviously the Joker will be used again by some other director with an entirely different cast, but for now I want that performance by Ledger as the Joker in TDK to be able to stand by itself for a decent amount of time.

bar the fact they both use eyeshadow, nope, I see no comparison

I see what you mean by Jack Sparrow vibe but I didn't really feel that from the Joker.
The Joker was more sinister and demonic!

Kind of like how some people were saying Nicholson will never be dethroned. And some still think hes the best Joker. But if they do replace Heath I can see people freaking out even more hardcore because his role was so recent. I'm with you though, I think I can handle them replacing him. I think I would want a relatively unknown actor to play him though.

No vibe. And Depp is like a dog chasing parts he wouldnt know what to do if he got it.

But if they were to re-cast the roll of the Joker why not Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I mean Heath was his mentor in 10 Things I Hate About You

I somehow did feel a Jack Sparrow vibe.... if they do recast joker, I hope Depp takes the role!!

There's a undeniable resemblance in their attitudes. Other than that, no.

some of jokers facial expressions were very similar to jack sparrows. if no one else sees that then thats your deal, but theres no need to hate one people who do see it, Ex. Two face saying

I hate how people really think Depp could do a better Joker than Ledger. That notion is so laughable and anyone who says that should be punched and kicked in the balls.

i mean, since youve seen Depps joker and all...

ridiculous.

not saying the similarities arent questionable, but the only sims i see is some of the facial expressions are somewhat similar.

I've already touched on the Joker being recasted in other threads, but I'll just reiterate that the character of the Joker should be involved, in some capacity, in the next film for a number of reasons. But this isn't the thread for that so I'll digress...

Back to the subject, I dont think its so much Ledger's performance, its the fact that a true interpretation of the Joker (which is what we got in TDK thanks to great writing just as much as great acting, lets not forget that) has alot of similarities to characters Depp has already played, not just Jack Sparrow.

If you combine elements from Depp's Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands & yes, Jack Sparrow, it's a pretty damn close interpretation of the Joker. I never suggested Depp for the role initally, but I was never against it either. On the same token, I'd be excited to have him do any number of roles in the next film because he's quite simply one of the best actors of this generation. He's a star because of these eclectic roles, and the fact that women happen to like him, not because he's tabloid fodder like Jolie, so when people try to lump him in that group I see it as almost disrespectful to his talent. If not for the female adoration, he could just as easily be another Daniel Day Lewis or Sean Penn, guys who are respected for their craft, and ability to play off kilter individuals. Besides Pirates & Willy Wonka, he's almost never done anything hugely successful commercially anyway, so please with all the "he's too big of a star" crap, he ain't Tom Cruise or Will Smith. Anyone suggesting he isn't one of the best actors of his generation needs to get over themselves

There was one scene where I thought Ledger remindet me of Depp, the hospital scene when he first looks at two face and has that "oops/gee" look on his face for a second, Depp has had that look quite often as Jack Sparrow, and in Sleepy Hollow and in the Chocolate Factory for example and the way Heath walked out of the hosptal looked like something Depp could've come up with...other than that...no

and by the way HEATH LEDGER RULES...but Johnny Depp is a great, great actor anyway, what he did in Edward Scisscorhands stays one of the most touching performances I've ever seen and he's also been great in all the other movies he starred in

exactly, its in the facial expressions. the face joker makes when the old man in the party scene says were not afraid of thugs or whatever, jack sparrow makes that face a couple times. now, that face is commonly used, so the title of the thread could be 'did anyone feel a anyone vibe from joker?' lol.

the comparison = facial expressions + iconic character.

also jokers walk away from the hospital was similar to jack sparrows walk, but very different at the same time.

Charisma is the key here, the only point I get what you're saying is the very opening scene, when he takes off his mask and the little smile.

But that's just an inkling, generally beyond that though, nah not at all!

But also....I'm NOT a fan of Depp coming into the next one, in ANY form and I don't even mind the lad!

Depp based his Jack Sparrow character on Keith Richards from Rolling Stones, whereas Ledger used A Clockwork Orange, among others, as inspiration for his Joker. I didn't get any vibe of Keith Richards when I see Ledger's Joker in TDK.
