I feel like we missed an entire scene where the name Black Canary originated. They just skipped to people automatically calling her Black Canary with no real reason.

I don't think the public calls her that just yet. Lance already did and I'm guessing Ray just heard about it in whatever snooping he did. After all, he knew all about her training with Ted.

Yeah, that reference was really forced. It's like they didn't really know HOW to work that name into the show. So instead of the more obvious/believable route, Laurel takes the name herself to honor Sara "(while somewhat differentiate herself at the same time), or maybe have Nyssa name her, they just had Lance randomly come up with in the most random spot possible.

Agreed...if she keeps training with Nyssa for about a year, then I could believably see her as being competent enough to use some of those listed weapons effectively.

And I think a good candidate/villain for her to face to prove on how far she would have come at that point would be China White. If Laurel can end up beating China White on her own in hand to hand combat, then it'll be a great way to show that she's finally at the necessary level to hold her own weight.
