First Avenger Directed by Joe Johnston

And it's uh still technically a rumor since all we have to go on are vague quotes from the crew.

At first Thor was supposed to be set completely in Asgard in 2007. That clearly has changed.

I know for a fact that a year ago Feige was still saying half & half. I was willing to accept that but was hoping for at least the large majority to be WWII. Now it looks like that's going to happen.

I don't know about a year ago, but I know for a fact that it was said to be at some point. I think it was about the time Favreau and Edgar Wright was announced. That Comic Con.

Mostly, part of it took place in the Viking period of Midgard.

For real true Cap fans...this is what they want they need the WW2 origin told on the big screen, but.... it is a risk, the general audience is going to be a little confused.

We have to hope that Thor opens up minds to more possibilities, then just standard modern day setting stuff, while we all love the 'realism'.... that Marvel strives for, face it Thor and Cap tend to go deep into the world of fantasy.

I would say Cap is far less fantastical than Thor or Hulk. Maybe not quite as realistic as Iron Man, but still close.

Well lets see, it is big time fantasy in that a very modern day hero, who interacts with Tony, and the other avengers was a 20 something kid all the way back in the 1940's.... and then gets frozen in the ice...and then is thawed out and is alive.

Now I get the greatness of the idea that the SSS caused his blood and liquids to not freeze, and he just kind of hibernated.

The show Fringe on Fox does a great job of making the concept of alternate realities seem provacative enough for TV viewers to take it seriously.... I think they are going to be able to digest Thor in this way....some kind of -interdimensional world that parrallels ours- even the director Kenneth Branah is clearly going this route.... he was excited about the idea of working with interdimensional beings.... and that was an early quote.

I think it is pretty fantasy based...that this great hero, has his origin in a WW2 film...but will be seen next opposite characters in our.

Interdimensionable beings shouldnt be that hard to stomach considering it is a kind of "heaven" where gods live. Its more of a Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe situation. A pocket universe full of fantastic elements not necessarily alternate timelines or universe

Hehehe, you'd think considering some people actually believe in that stuff.

Maybe.... the conflicted Captain America could be this... He wants to get over there soooo bad and fight that he'd do anything to go to war. He risks his life to make a difference and he becomes the only Super Soldier.

The US and Army higher ups find him WAAAAAYYYYY to valuable to simply lose in a war. Think of the research they could do on him....the things they could learn from him. They could still continue the research based on him... THEY CAN'T SEND HIM INTO THE FIELD AND LOSE HIM... he's too valuable.

Now he has to sit around and do nothing but work out, and adhere to a daily regiment of scientific testing on his blood etc... and he's frustrated because he isn't going to war.... AND HE CAN REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE NOW.

So he sneaks out and does covert missions (creating the persona of Captain America)... this would be considered going AWOL in a way.... MAYBE he even goes AWOL on D-day to storm the beaches of Normandy with the Troops?

The clip from Johnson doesn't sound like bad news to me... people are just overreacting.

Eh, I really don't see how you can sneak out to do covert missions w/o:

a) Having access to intel that is usable(the army doesn't just leave that stuff lying around to be picked up by any grunt who passes by);

B)Finding some way to get from America to Europe(you're not suggesting that he be sneaking out every night to do this are you?) The 1st time he would do this, EVERYONE back at Project: Rebirth is gonna know it.

I think some of your points make sense about him being too valuable and having that set up conflict between his superiors & Steve's natural inclination to actually serve in combat to make a difference is worth exploring to see if it can be made into a managable and interesting plot point. But that'll take quite a bit of hashing out to make it feel organic and not forced or contrived or simply implausable.

Most of that is straight out of The Adventures of Captain America, Sentinel of Liberty (1991-1992) Marvel Comics.

Steve Rogers sneaks off base during the nights to investigate and bust up Nazi spy rings on US soil. The Government has him enlisted and in basic training trying to figure out what to do with the guy... and all he wants to do is fight!!

I really didn't like the sound of what Johnston had to say...

i dont see any issues with what joe said and i dont think a ww2 cap film is that hard or what not.

One thing that interests me is how people have said that Captain America will be like Saving Private Ryan.
Loved that movie but I mean the way that its so gritty and real are mature and R rated that I'll be surprised to see them try and pull it off with Cap.
But Johnson is a good director so I have faith

Yeah, I'm betting that the only similarity will be that they are both set in WWII. Here's to hoping that I'm wrong...

Well it was never gonna be rated R. We always knew that. But here's still hoping for a hard PG-13.

Johnston's comments didn't really inspire confidence in me. I'm a little worried. I'm all for exploring the character's psychology, just as long as it doesn't drag him or the story down. I don't want it to be like Ang Lee's Hulk. I don't want another Superman Returns. I would've preferred to see Cap's origin told in a single act. I don't know if the whole movie needs to be an origin story. It seems like people are obsessed with the idea of origin stories, now. So, I'm not really seeing the "different direction" aspect. At best, it sounds like Captain America Begins. I don't know...I hope I'm proven wrong...but right now, I'm not feeling the hype. Just make it not suck, please.

Well, considering that Cap has never been brought to screen correctly, it makes sense that Johnston would want to explore the character a bit. It's about Cap's motivations and the struggle of him never quite fitting in. Even the current Cap is a man out of his time that doesn't fit in with today's crowd, superhero or otherwise.

yea we will just have to see how this turns out,. i am sure it will all work out well. we dont have any real story details besides its a ww2 movie and all that. So it should become a bit more clear once we get more script details coming out and all that. i am sure the film will probably go start of ww2 with pre sss steve, then transform and then rest of the film will flash through all of ww2 and cap doing this and that. Then end of film him getting freezed in what ever fashion. Then closing scene/after credits scene being found in the present by shield.

There is a perception Captain America is American propoganda, so exploring Cap is esstential to differentiate him from ultra patriotism. I see nothing wrong with exploring Cap. Cap is a unique character in Marvel cause he has essentially 2 origins. The Super Soldier project, and his waking up in today's world. We need to see Cap shaped by the world around him, and the pressure he had in WWII.

I think examining his psyche is not only a good idea, it is essential!

totally if that is what they are getting that it should turn out well.

My wife finally saw a trailer for The Wolfman yesterday and said: "Wow! That looks like it's gonna be really good! Wanna go see that?" Of course I replied: "Hell yeah! That's directed by the guy that's doing Captain America!" To which I got the usual eye roll. (Oh well, I make no excuses for my geekness...after 6+ years of marriage, she's used to it by now!) Kinda cool that most people that I talk to that have seen the trailers seem to think it's gonna be cool as well. More hype for the First Avenger, I say!
