First Avenger Directed by Joe Johnston

yea just checked the weekend figures film ended up at 3rd place with 30.6million right around the mark i thought it would be for the weekend. plus going against percy and the valentine's day movie.

The Wolfman had a strong opening, but it still cost 150 mil. It´s gonna have a hard time to get its cost back. But it´s not the disaster some thought it´d be.

yea i want to see it myself still but if it can keep good figures for a few weeks i am sure it will make up its cost. we will see how it goes through the week and into the following weekend.

well im not gonna blame The Wolman totally on JJ. didnt he come in at the last second after they fired some other guy? i think they brought him in to try to fix what the previous guy did. maybe he just ran out of time. i still want to see The Wolfman by the way. i dig werewolves and i hear its pretty gory.

I think most of the blame for any lack of success should be laid at the feet of the script as well as the studio. He was put in a fairly precarious position.

Johnston´s biggest challenge IMO will be to convince audiences there´s more to Cap than American patriotism propaganda, something the overseas audiences have more and more of a problem with in this day and age.

Captain America needs to stand for an Ideal that America (the government) doesn't necessarily attain. I don't think this will be a problem in the WWII environment for the bulk of the movie.

It's when Captain America is in present times it needs to be shown he will not deviate from the American Ideal just because some two bit politician has an agenda.

That's just an irresponsible budget. I don't care how big a draw Hopkins and Del Toro are overseas... I mean that's a Thor esque budget. Too much.

The version of Wolfman released in theatres wasn't Johnston's movie. The movie was basically taken away from him some time ago and recut by the studio. Studio basically recut and redid parts of the movie without Johnston. Took out the expensive score and had it rescored.

So for better or worse, the movie released wasn't fully Johnston's movie.

I mean that happens. Sometimes the studio will bring someone on to "fix" the movie or redo the movie during post-production for one reason or another.

So he should get a free pass? What about his previous work? Taking that into account the Wolfman is yet another poor film he has directed. Seriously, as each day passes the more I think Marvel just hired him because they digged Rockateer.

Hmmm, I remember there was a story about the movie being recut by the studio, which was then denied. If an extended/director´s cut version shows up that´d be evidence that they lied.

I feel you're being totally unfair on Johnson.

You do realise that the reasons you give for the movie being poor and Johnson not being up to the task where not down to Johnson right?

Johnson delivered his cut which the studio balked at, drafted two editors in (Walter Murch and Mark Goldblatt) who reportedly cut about 20 minutes of the film out (20 minutes of, I suspect, character development) and delivered the hatchet job that got served to us.

Is it a directors fault if a studio suddenly decides to adopt the Fox approach and go for speed over quality, rejects his cut and gets in someone who edits the movie to their wishes?

And anyways, given the time period and stylistic approach of the Rocketeer, why wouldnt Marvel turn to a guy who they know has delivered a similiar movie to how they envisage Cap before?

I thought Wolfman was fairly decent, i just didn't dig the last 30 minutes or so. Tho i can understand people might be worried over the action scenes now.

Johnston directs with a sense of adventure, that's what I get from all his movies. He's known as a protege of the Beard, and it does show, October Sky. Rocketeer. Hidalgo. JP III. Those movies give me faith that we'll get a period piece Cap that will work in the universe into which he is placed. Most mainstream joe six packs can't differentiate between one director's style and another, they just know the character they've seen in other media is coming to a live action screen near them.

yea i am sure he will do well with cap and with marvel studios still controlling the picture if things are not going the way they want they will probably keep him in line to what they want.

How can you be sure his cut was any better? After all, you have to be curious as to why the studio didn't like what Johnston did no? Perhaps the film was at the point of no return when his cut was chopped and what we saw in the cinema was simply damage control.

I'm sure there are countless directors who have depicted the time period of WWII perfectly, directors that also have strong filmographies too. So why go with what is seemingly a gamble on a guy who has produced more bad than good?

he came on to wolfman literally weeks before it was to be shot the previous director left they had a script already

more bad than good lolol wow

credibility lost right there

Wolfman, Jumanji, Jurassic Park 3 and Hidalgo.....all quality films. Yes, my credibility is really gone, whatever floats your boat mate.

Now that I can accept.

October Sky is a great movie. Johnston is hit or miss, but with a great script he can make a hit.

He knows how to do a period piece. I'm more worried about the Narnia guys as script writers then Johnston's skill as a director.

The thing about Marvel is that they find the most out of left field people to make their films and, minus Zack Penn, they've been wonderful so far.

Agreed.

I frankly think studios have a better understanding to these things then most fans. Fans throw out the usual names like James Cameron and whatnot but Marvel brings out guys like Favreau and Leterrier and surprise us all.

Leterrier made me way more nervous then Johnston does right now actually. Especially since he had Zak Penn writing his script (thank god for Norton's rewrites).

On a side note, Letterier's Clash of the Titans looks like a whole lotta fun. I'm not sure about good, but it'll definitely be fun.
