First Avenger Directed by Joe Johnston

Wolfman didn't just underperform, it was a huge bomb.

That being said, I found the movie to be huge messy fun and I'm going to give JJ a shot but I still wouldn't care if they replaced him because he is just an OKAY director.

yea he is a solid film maker. Sure he has had a few bad films either BO failures/critic failure. But he has the talent and like i and others pointed out it wont just be joe calling all the shots, it will be the other producers, the guys at marvel/paramount, and then the cast with the script and all that.

I thought Hidalgo had some beautiful cinematography so I will Johnston that.

Wolfman was a mess before JJ, and JP3 was going to suck anyway. JJ I think will be solid as long as the script is solid. That is what I think will make or break the film. I think JJ will direct it well, as he usually does. If the script is good, the movie will be good. If it is bad, even good direction won't save it.

Yeah, JJ only had 3 weeks of prep for Wolfman.

He's had 30+ weeks for Cap.

Exactly. You can't compare being involved in a production for 30 weeks to his being rushed into Wolfman. That is more of an indictment on the production of Wolfman as opposed to JJ, IMO.

Also, JJ loves period pieces, he's said so himself. Look at October Sky and Rocketeer. Set in the 40's and 50's. Wonderful movies.

Yep, and this is one reason he was an inspired choice for Cap. I think JJ's willingness to talk and the ideas he has shared have been good ideas so far, so I think the production is heading in the right direction.

I will say this for Wolfman: without his involvement on Wolfman, maybe we wouldn't have Hugo Weaving coming in to be the Red Skull. That is a plus that came out of that production.

yea i think joe will be fine with cap, he has a good visual style, and has done some good films, and then with the cast, crew, and the marvel guys in charge there they should form a good film.

Hidalgo is very underrated and was alot of fun. Combine that with The Rocketeer and the character driven October Sky and we could have a great Cap film. I'm not worried at all.

totally i am not worried at all myself at this point. Will only be if once filming starts if we hear of any problems and/or issues.

I don't get why everyone seems to hate Hidalgo. I mean it was a horse movie but since when does everyone hate horse movies?

i never seen it myself, so i have no judgement to or against it.

I liked Hidalgo. I love the American cowboy in Asian country premise

I thought that at times (especially during action scenes) it had a very Raiders of the Lost Ark vibe going for it. (And as many already know, JJ served as visual effects art director on that classic film!)

yea we are probably going to get some wicked visuals for cap.

I liked Hidalgo myself, tho I admit I've only seen it once and that was a few years ago. But I find it strange that when dudes are listing their most hated Joe Johnston movies they always seem to want to include it.

Personally I find The Rocketeer to be a little dull. It just never clicked with me but I think it's a well made film. Different Strokes, I guess.

Here is an old Audio Interview Clip of Joe Johnston that was done apparently in February. Not sure if this was already posted but just incase:

JP3 has two absolutely dreadful directorial missteps. One of them is a P.O.V. shot where Neill gets hit over the head whilst looking at Macy and you see Macy's reaction as it fades to black. But the really bad one is where Neill has a bad dream that a raptor is sat on the plane with him. Dream sequences have no place in a Jurassic Park film for a start, but then they actually make it look like the raptor is talking. I really can't fathom why anybody would consider this to be a good idea. Even if it was in the script, the director can still get rid of it. Beyond that there are awful dissolves all over the place and the film is entirely devoid of anything approaching peril and tension. It's a disaster, and the blame has to lie with Johnston. So, in other words, I'm somewhat concerned that he's been selected for TFA:CA. Of all the directors that have been selected for these Marvel films he's easily the oddest and most worrying choice.

i actually like all of Johnston's movies so im one of the few guys who is actually happy he's directing it.

i liked Hildalgo, October Sky and JP3, Jumanji and The Pagemaster.
