First Avenger Directed by Joe Johnston

I just hope that Johnston shares the passion for his film that the other Marvel directors do for theirs.

He also says Cap doesn't have any super powers and he doesn't really seem to know what he's talking about.

He said he's the peek of human potential. He knows what he's talking about.

been given this amazing gift of transformation into the perfect specimen

What does he mean by it being different and going in a different direction?

Hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised. Marvel wouldn't release the script if they didn't think it was good enough. We shall see what happens.

He certainly knows what he's talking about and i have pretty good faith that he'll make a badass, Captain America, movie.

He's fully aware of the character. When he says no powers, he means blatant ones like the rest of them have. Cap gets transformed into possibly human perfection, meaning he's at the peak of what a regular human could max out to.

^ I completely agree. That's how I read what he said.

I'm a little worry after reading Joe Johnson's remarks about this movie; I hope he won't take the movie on a direction that is too different from the comics. And I still don't think it can make that June/July 2011 release date, since we have no mentions of script being done nor actors being cast. Thor has began shooting and it only comes out a couple of months before Cap would.

I think...although I am not sure the very idea that most of this movie takes place in the past, could be considered going in a different direction...esspecially for the general audience, who may have picked up one or two Cap comics in thier lives.... but may not actually be fully aware of his origin.

Seriously..think about it, Marvel characters have all been based on the here and now, Thor will based on an alternate dimension theory...but time still parallels present day earth, even if Thor is Imortal...but Cap..

Caps Origin..everything... is based on the WW2 concept.

I think it was Rage that once said that it would be cool to portray pre-SSS Steve Rogers as a kind of Will Hunting/closet geometric wunderkind & show it off by having him clear the table while playing billiards. I think that this really should be in the film to help explain how Cap can toss his shield and have it ricochet in specific angles to hit more than one target and catch it on it's return. Let's hope so.

As far as Johnston's comments, I have to admit that I had a little cringe when he said that it is going in a "different direction". In the end though I still have FAITH that it will still be true enough to the character that we all know & love. He's a really good director and besides, I'm sure that Marvel won't let him stray too far if so.

EDIT: Oops, accidental double post...again.
(When are we gonna get this fixed? Kinda annoying.)

I am encouraged by what I read in the interview. The director of Cap I wanted to explore the psychology of what it means to be an icon like Cap is. I think when he says he still doesn't fit in, that is what he is talking about. Cap is not just a soldier to the army. Not just a hero. He is the symbol of America. Everyone looks up to Cap and measures themselves up to him, cause he is the symbol of America. That is a great burden for a man to bear, and when he said he still doesn't quite fit in, I think this is what he is talking about.

I love what I'm hearing from him, and I'm very excited for this film

Captain America is basically Marvel's Superman as far as what the universe thinks of him. Every character, even those that don't really like him, know who is and respects him to an extent.

I think Joe will do great. I seriously hope they gave him the mini-series: "The Adventures of Captain America Sentinel of Liberty" ... that is the quintessential origin story for Cap.

I always thought THAT story would make the perfect Cap movie and should be the basis for the script.

Different direction makes no sense to me because many of the things he referenced are already a part of the character's canon in the comics. So it just confuses me and makes me wonder how much he truly knows about it.

That was me! I think that they need to establish things like that early on in the movie... to make some things more believable.

I also think that Steve should get in a fight (Pre SSS) and get his arse kicked because he is standing up for someone or to someone who is a much bigger/rougher guy... it shows his character and proves that this kid has heart and his courage and strength of will isn't just because he has the muscles to back it up.

Originally I know Feige was saying that the film was gonna be a half past/half present day type film. Now it seems that it will be mostly WWII era. There's your different direction. I for one, am very happy about this.

Actually when we first started hearing about this project we thought it would be ALL world war II.

I know for a fact that a year ago Feige was still saying half & half. I was willing to accept that but was hoping for at least the large majority to be WWII. Now it looks like that's going to happen.

before that the long-standing rumor was all WWII though.

But that was all that was, a rumor. As opposed to something the studio head actually says.
