Disney/Marvel & ABC working on Avengers spin-off tv show? - Part 1

I don't get that from that tweet at all, don't think there's anything to indicate she, or anyone else at Variety has actually seen anything from the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot yet. Obviously it's possible I'm wrong, I just think it's a bit of a stretch to take that away from that tweet. She says "hearing it's meant to be..." which was stated by ABC pres Paul Lee back at the Jan press meeting not something that's just been discovered after someone watched it.
The "predictably strong" part is where I inferred that from, because that implies to me that there were expectations that it would be strong, and they have been met, according to her "buzz."

For the record, I'm not suggesting they're having screenings yet, I'm saying we're now entering into that glorious period of time when people who work for the networks start getting glimpses of the promo material being put together for the May Upfronts, which are a month a way now. SHIELD will be included in that group, and insiders will be seeing glimpses of it any time now. Deadline started their pilot season series on Saturday only because there was already buzz coming out about some of the material from other pilots that insiders were seeing and reporting back on. They just said that SHIELD was NOT a part of that group yet - that Whedon & Co. still had it under lock and key and no one has seen anything from that project yet. So if the Variety woman was compelled to tweet about it today, it would suggest that that ball may now be rolling for SHIELD as well.

Wasn't it deadline that reported some big news recently related to DC about ... don't remember who, someone not working with them anymore when it was completely untrue? I know the folks in charge of press at Wondercon were making it very clear in the press meeting for Superman Unbound that Deadline were reporting on stuff that was completely untrue, they were not impressed.

I find it hard to believe they would be "fed" stuff from Marvel... and most certainly not about S.H.I.E.L.D.

That said, I don't want this to become a discussion about bashing or discrediting anyone, the point of the thing that sparked this discussion is that it seems apparent (to me at least) that while the press are still in the dark about S.H.I.E.L.D. specifics there's still lots of talk about it, and THAT is a good thing :)

The more buzz there is (whether anyone has seen footage or not) the better. The more people are talking about this show and spreading the word to people who haven't heard about it yet the better the chances of it doing well when it finally makes it onto our tv screens!

I think it's fair to say the "predictably strong" would apply to any TV series based on the 3rd highest grossing movie of all time... don't you think?

Usually, the way the trades use the word "buzz," it's not about media coverage or public expectations like it is for us, it's about what they're hearing from the inside. So they're most likely talking about what people are saying about the actual product, not the public expectations for it. So a source like Variety saying the "buzz is predictably strong," suggests they've gotten buzz on the actual footage, and it's as strong as predicted. Predictably strong.

What are these May Affronts people speak of? :p

Re: Deadline being reliable

Theres a running joke on Boxoffice.com about Nikkie Finke being wrong all the time because of the way she reported The Avengers' opening weekend completely off the mark.

She had lots of "NOT A RECORD" in her articles and we know how that went down.

There's a difference between estimating box office and getting inside info on an upcoming show or casting scoops, etc, though. Finke's box office track record may be spotty (even if its not as horrible as BO.com makes it out to be), but her sources for getting intel are about as legit as they come. Even Variety has printed false info in the past (remember when they said JGL would be Alberto Falcone in TDKR?), but there's a reason studio heads fear Finke, and it's not cuz she's full of hot air.

She honestly seems like a terrible person that I would never want to meet, but Deadline's track record for getting inside intel almost qualifies them as a trade themselves. Almost.

I read somewhere that the post credits scene on Iron Man 3 is an introduction to the shield tv series .. how true is this?

I haven't heard anything about that. I suppose it's possible, but it sounds unlikely to me.

I haven't heard anything but I would be surprised given that ABC hasn't publicly given the green light yet. The film opens next week in New Zealand of all places so I'm sure we'll know by then.

Not sure where to even bring this up given I'm new here but how does one report PM spam?

You could Pm an administrator like Hunter Rider,Kelly or C.Lee. Not sure if there's a report post function in PMs but i know there is in ordinary forum posts.

"Buzz on ABC's 'SHIELD' is predictably strong. Hearing it's meant to be fairly family-friendly. Time slot talk: Sun-9, Tues-8, Thurs-8."

ABC chief salivates at opportunity to cancel popular Joss Whedon program
"Sticking a good one to the fanboys is why I signed up for this job!" smirks suit-clad ass hole.

Oh stop it... this isn't FOX. :o

It's an offshoot of the biggest movie of 2012, with the same director to boot. They're not going to treat it like dirt. They're going to pull out all the stops.

The Joss Whedon of 2013 is not the Joss Whedon of 2009. At least, not as far as the studio/network execs are concerned.

This will not only almost certainly be the first Whedon show to get the respect it deserves from its network, but it will also be the first to have a real budget. I was honestly thinking the other day about what that might be like, because I've always associated Joss' TV ventures with a certain low-budget aesthetic/charm. It'll seem so bizarre to me watching a weekly show from him that doesn't have that vibe.

Also, if my beloved Southland gets canceled this year as it looks like it will, Joss needs to bring his other brother Zack on board the writing staff for this, because the Southland episode he wrote last night was incredible.

Here's hoping for not-Sunday. Way, way too much competition.

Yeah Sunday forces choices no one wants to make.

I'd be happy with Thursday. If it can kill off Big Bang Theory, so much the better.

I like TBBT a lot.. but it's been going long enough it's time for it to start winding down I think. Either way, I think Thursdays really does seem to be the most likely spot ABC is going to put this, if ANYTHING can go up against TBBT I think S.H.I.E.L.D. can.
