Disney's live-action "Mulan"

...please don't have them make this closer to a carbon copy of the original.

Ugh, have a pair of balls Disney. Release the movie on time, outside factors be damned, and in the original vision. God knows you can afford to take a risk every once in a while.

But what if they filmed something that didn't work? These movies aren't really up to the directors. These are studio films in every way. So what they would have made in the first place was studio mandated. In this case, it seemed they were making a movie that would get the seal of approval from China. If the studio doesn't like it and they have the money, should they not reshoot it?

There is no reason to think this is all about adding Mushu and the songs back in, as much as I wish that was the case.

Another bad Disney live-action remake coming up....No shocker here..

Oh man, was there ever a movie where such extensive reshoots helped?

china is an important country for boxoffice for years. Disney made sure in pre-production that this movie was good enough for china. so i dont think this is because of them. i rewatched the trailer and i think there is no way that this style and tone would work with singing. If they just add it it will stand out. I think it would be very easy to add a talking animal (if its all in her head) and big action. 4 months is a f... long time and stopping reshoots 1 month before the premiere is huge. Studios have spend years perfecting reshoots and they now can do it a lot easier than 10-20 years ago. but still 1 month before the premiere?

Another boat load of money coming their way...

That said, I'd only consider two of them bad. The rest I have either loved or at least enjoyed.

Since it said there were some battle scenes they had work on, I assume that’s why the reshoots are mostly so long.

Even then, it shouldn't be 4 months. That is like filming a completely new film, and not a short one.

True, but I thought this was their biggest live-action remake in terms of scale, no?

And of course, there’s probably changes outside of battles too.

Not sure, but I could see that.

Even then though, 4 months for action scenes doesn't make much sense. Especially as you don't really need actors for that. Most of that would be extras and stunt folk. 4 months of reshoots is the kind of thing you do when you need to work around schedules and do a lot of character interaction scenes.

Four comparsions, it took 4 months to shoot Helm's Deep, which all had to be done at night. Hard to imagine if you totaled up all the action in this movie, it would be able to compare to Helm's Deep. One of the largest, most intricate battle scenes ever put on film. One that saw them trash large portions of it (I am looking at you Arwen and the Glittering Caves).

Ah, yes. I forgot about the schedules of the actors (if they had set up other projects).

Right. I’m just really curious how the battle scenes hold up against Hollywood and Chinese cinema.

Going off the trailer, I would sooner expect the reshoots have to do with her performance than the battle scenes not being big enough or something like that. The movie looks gorgeous, but putting aside the political controversy over the lead here, she really lacked the intensity one would expect from the character in what they showed. Especially in the close ups of her during the battles. If they reshoot the battle scenes, I'd expect most of the reshoots to focus on her closeups, given how oddly nonplussed she looks in those shots. But that'd just be my expectation.

The little of the battle scenes we have got, look great. Very nice wuxia style going on. So it makes me wonder if that is the "cover" story. If I am honest, Mulan herself looks kind of wooden, even in those scenes. So I wonder if they are going to try and liven her up.

Yeah, it’s possible it’s a PR spin.

I didn’t really have any negative feelings towards what they showed of Mulan herself so far. But I actually also wasn’t expecting her to be much like the animated version.

It's less about her being like the animated version and more like she just looks stone faced in every shot. Which to me is odd. You'd expect some sort of emotion out of her, especially considering the journey.

It's probably unfair, but what they have shown us really feels like them doing their own Crouching Tiger. And there Zhang gave one of my all time favorite performances, that has a lot of layers to it. Including the mask of stoicism. Here it just kind of feels like Mulan, no matter where she is, she has the same expression of her face and her one line has no life.

I wonder if they’re doing that as a way to appeal to watch the Chinese audience might be expecting out of a film like this one.

The phoenix not speaking is probably another issue as the wacky sidekick is where most of the humor in these live action adaptations come from. You can't really make a war epic with fun humor, that is what Mushu and Yao, Ling and Chien Po were for.

Is it reasonable to assume they might bring Shang into it after the response to him not being in it?

That would be like firing Michael J. Fox from BTTF after the movie has wrapped and rehiring Eric Stoltz with only 4 months to redo the entire movie

Hiring Shang would be like redoing 50% of the movie

How is that the same thing? Love interest is not the same as the lead. At all.

It'd still be going back and adding a major supporting character, and all the scenes they'd have to reshoot with him, and how much his existence would affect the overall narrative.
