Disney's live-action "Mulan"

Now that Disney has let everyone know that they just have to wait three months to get it for free, that's not going to happen. No big success for Mulan, not even a marginal success. So Unwise.
Well then I hope Disney considers an uptick of D+ memberships enough of a win.

It would be nice to have at least one thing I was looking forward to in 2020 actually happen...

The $30 cost is too high. Should have made it $20. Maybe throw in a membership discount for new subscribers who sign up and rent it

I think they should have offered the movie with a long term membership renewal or starting one. If you signed up for a year or extended for a year, you should have gotten the movie for "free" imo.

Well there goes their leverage. If we can wait months for its release we can wait another 3 months for it to be free.

As the old saying goes, "Good things come to those who wait." In this case, the good thing, at the very least, will be saving $30.

Three months? I'm definitely waiting. I'd probably wait if it was three years.

Yeah that's why i never got the "I'll buy it cuz I'm bored" reasoning. There's so much content out there to enjoy. Even things I'm sure they haven't seen before. It's not like Mulan is the only thing out there. I'm sure there are other movies, books, shows, albums, to enjoy. But to each their own
The price doesn’t fit at all with the whole
of Disney + for a year (which includes Mulan 3 months later) being not a whole lot more than the price of a one time watch of Mulan on release.

I'm interested. But unless it is the rare film I feel I HAVE TO watch, I'm very patient.
Reminds me of my movie theater going habits. I use to go every week just to go. Now it's more like twice a month maybe, unless there is an exceptional amount of releases I want to see. One annoying thing about this summer is I felt like I might actually go to the theater a lot. Blah.

I still think I'll like Mulan more than any of the other remakes.

It is one of two that I actually thought looked interesting. The other being Maleficent which I pretty much hated, so hopefully my instincts are better this time.

Honestly, the delay really solves my problem for me. I was torn about really wanting to see the movie but not wanting to support a star that's acted as an anti-democracy propaganda mouthpiece for Xi's regime. But now I can just peaceably wait for it to be free on Disney+ like almost everyone else not desperate for new child-distractions.

Looks like there was an update and they removed the December date language. Haha

Anyway I have a feeling that most of us weren’t going to fork over the $30 to begin with, so they never really lost us as potential buyers. Their core audience for PVOD are the parents stuck at home with kids that need something new to watch so they can shut up.

This was a boneheaded strategy and everyone knows it, especially if the plan was to drop it on Disney+ in December.

That is kind of how the movie looks, doesn't it? :hehe:

There's nothing about this movie that screams must-see. Not to mention I can simply watch the superior animated Disney version right now with my Disney+ sub WITHOUT paying $30. I don't know why anyone thought this was a good idea.

Look I get it. The situation right now is grim. WE're in a pandemic with no end in sight. We have finished movies and no way to release them. Some people are starving for those new movies.

I get the dilemma. I just don't get this as a solution.

This film has always looked like diet Asian cinema anyway. I love me some historical Asian epic movies, this film has always looked like a poor imitation of that genre from the start.

I mean I predicted 2-3 months before it's $6 to rent, but for free? That's just silly to announce now. But I guess most people won't know about it

EDIT: And I still really don't get the whole "families will pay because they need to entertain their kids" thing. I'm not saying they won't do it but, similar to what's been said before, there's so much content out there that I don't get why.
For young kids you can pretty much put anything with bright colors in front of them and they'll at least sort of watch or be distracted by it. Regardless if it's new or old.
And it's not like Mulan looks like a "kids" movie either. This looks like the most serious Disney film in a while, at least from the trailers (which could lie). Nothing particularly friendly for young kids. And then older kids have so many other things to do. And it's not like you'll be taking the kids to get out of the house for a few hours. Kids are already cooped up doing remote learning in so many parts of the world, especially from the US. And from what my coworkers are saying/what I can hear from their kids screaming in the back of conference calls, it sucks.

But again I'm sure we'll hear about all the records Mulan broke and yada yada. I do hope the movie is good. It looks a little bland from the marketing though

I’m still looking forward to watching this movie. I think a lot of the criticisms/haterade this movie is getting is because of the $30 price tag. I honestly don’t think it looks bland, from the trailers it looks like pretty epic especially if seen on a big movie screen. I’m actually more interested in this than I am in Tenet.

I’m looking forward to it too. Disney’s weird release strategy aside, the movie looks different enough from the animated version that it has my interest. Too bad Disney+ isn’t available in my region. And theatres aren’t open either. So .
