World Doc Ock's lair

I gave up on being a purist years ago. There's no true consistent continuity anymore. And I wonder if there should be. If you have a really good story idea, but it conflicts with the events in something that somebody wrote 40 years ago, should you be forced to scrap the idea or tailor it to meet that story's events?

That's not even the issue here, Chris. Ock upgrading his tentacles to six of them is not a conflict of continuity. Some people were just saying that he can't call himself Doctor Octopus anymore.

When in actuality a real Octopus is characterized by eight arms. But it's also acceptable to count Ock's legs [with his four regular tentacles]. Even though they are not technically arms.

But I guarantee you this, if eight armed Doc Ock in ASM #600 looks badass, you wont hear a peep out of any of them about it :oldrazz: :cwink:

Sorry-that's not what I was talking about. I'm against the 6 tentacles b/c it's silly. Not because of history or continuity, but because it's just a bad idea. I think it will be, anyway. However, you're right. If it looks cool, nobody will care.

Why do you think it's silly? It's a power upgrade.

I do have to agree with with joker, if I was the good ol doc I would be thinking "I need at least 10 more of these guys." If he didn't love his name so much I'm shure he would have more arms.

BTW, we count his limbs until now.

I dont mind a limb change for Ock. Every villain has had a costume change, Otto included. Besides, we are talking about a guy with four mechanical tentacles coming out of his back. How is four "normal" but six is silly?

THANK YOU!

I was beginning to think I was the only one in here who can see some kind of positive side to Ock upgrading his power level like this. Although I can understand people being nostalgic for the classic four tentacle look.

Now I hope Slott lives up to his promise of making him a Dr Doom threat level in the story. And with six tentacles to boot, it should be all kinds of awesome *Touch wood*.

Okay, when is ASM #600 coming out, July? I guarantee you this, if he looks badass, as opposed to stupid or even merely not stupid, I will mail you a handmade Jokerplushie, out of pocket.

Thank you, darling. But all I ask is that you reserve judgement until we get some pics of his new look. If it looks lame, we'll hunt down Joe Q down with pitchforks and flaming torches together.

Deal? :hehe:

Deal, my dear Clown Prince. Although I think considering all the hype, they will play their cards very close to the chest to force people into buying the actual comic book.

I'm against the six tentacles, but if we're having it for one issue only, I'm totally fine. It's good for a change. But maybe Ock realizes in the end that two more tentacles won't change too much. The problem is himself, his strategy, his tactics or Spidey is simply too much for him, and he'll have only 4 tentacles the next time around, but with a better plan in mind.
And I like the new look of the tentacles. Remind me of the movie's look.

Oh, yeah, they looked awesome, but they had that whole minds-of-their-own thing and that bugged the heck out of me for the longest time, since in the comics, Otto doesn't need any fancy AIs to multi-task.

I always thought so too, that in the movie, his arms were the true villains, not Dr. Octavius.

To Doctor Doom: You know, I do take commissions for crochet work. You'll have to pay shipping out to Latveria, though :p

Oh, and as promised previously:

Enjoy! :woot: I'm currently working on a black suit, for his turn in the Ultimate Clone Saga. And although I have tried my best to keep my Ottoplushie up to date with all of Ock's various reinventions, I'm not going to sew two more tentacles to his back! :oldrazz:

If I found it in a store I would buy it, unfortunately, I don't buy things off the net. As for the new Spectacular Ock, it's awesome, you have some real talent there!

I'll have to read the story with the extra limbs before I cast judgment, if he uses them in a well written way, I will definitely approve. So basically, it's a waiting game.

I don't think anyone's trying to argue with you about an octopus having eight arms. :oldrazz:

This whole thing has me miffed because I honestly don't believe he needs the extra arms. He was already one of Spider-Man's most lethal foes...at least he used to be before they started dumbing him down. When they said they were going to raise him to Doctor Doom threat status, I assumed they were going to focus on his intellect. Have him cook up some brilliant and cunning scheme like the ones he used to but on a much larger scale.

This "upgrade" suggests to me that they're moving in exactly the opposite direction. :csad:

I don't believe he'd become significantly more deadly with two extra appendages, or four, or even six. No matter how much they decide to amp him up physically, Otto Octavius' deadliest weapon will always be his intellect. I just wish the writers at Marvel would remember that.

...But like I said before, if they do write him well I'll gladly look past the whole extra tentacle thing, same as how I managed to look past the mind-controlling tentacles and enjoy the movie.

:whatever:

If looks mattered that much, Ultimate Ock would be my favorite incarnation of the character. Not the old, chubby man with a bowl cut. ;)

To M.P.:

Adorable! ...I always did like that coat.

LOL! Awesome.

I always loved that pic. He's just turned around and sees that Spidey has landed on the train behind him. Then he grins at him and then speeds up the train and rips the brakes out.

Can anyone say badass? :otto:

Believe me I both understand and share your concerns. I do. My fan love for Doc Ock is limitless. I'll tear Queseda and Slott and a new one if they muck this up.

But I'm remaining cautiously optimistic. If Joe Q had given the interviews we've been reading about Doc Ock in ASM #600, I'd take it all with a large pinch of salt. The guy is full of s***. But it's Slott that's been feeding us juicy little snippets about the story because he's writing it. And Slott has a solid reputation as a writer.

The way he's been hyping Ock up is very, very, VERY promising. This six tentacles thing falls under the heading of his brand new look he was talking about. The Dr Doom threat level is something entirely different, IMO. 104 pages in this issue remember? Can you just imagine what kind of scheme Ock has cooking in a comic book that big.

Oh no, I'm talking about the fact that you guys will forgive the six tentacles if they look good. Writing and looks are something entirely different.

I take writing of a character over appearance any day of the week. Ock has not always been drawn as great eye candy thru the years, but that's not why we love him.

I suppose I should look at it as a plus that Mr. Slott is a big fan of the character. Maybe he's just as sick of the overly simplified "Ock angry, Ock smash" stories as I am. Maybe he just added two new tentacles because he thought it would look cool. Who knows...

I'm just so tired of being disappointed.

And holy crap...I just realized that this book isn't going to hit shelves for over two months. Oh, God...the suspense is going to drive me mad! Oo

Ah, I see.

No, I couldn't forgive them if they looked good because I already think they look good. :oldrazz:

Trust me, if I hung that cover up among my Giger prints it would feel right at home. My problem is just with the idea behind the extra two, which I explained in my previous post. It has nothing to do with how they look. I think they're very sexay. *waggles eyebrows*

Wow, a lot of debate from one cover by Mr. Ross! Just goes to show how hungry we all are for new Ock stuff, new information. :)

I'm keeping an open mind, personally. Like I said earlier, it's all in the execution.

As for Ock's adamantium limbs, they were indeed destroyed. They were confiscated at the end of Revenge of the Sinister Six.

(and this one)

Then, in the beginning of Lethal Foes of Spider-Man, both sets of limbs -- the adamantium ones and the original titanium-alloy ones -- were destroyed. Disintegrated by some high-tech means.

Which, even long-distance, hurt.

A lot.

At the end of Lethal Foes, Otto had re-molecularized his original tentacles, but was interrupted before he could recreate the adamantium set, and he remarked to himself that the adamantium limbs didn't react as quickly to his thoughts as the original ones. For that or some other reason (maybe he just couldn't get the adamantium; it's rare stuff after all), he's never recreated his limbs in adamantium. It'd be nice if he got that kind of power in ASM #600; that is a power-up I'd be wholly behind.

My personal theory is that Carolyn never had the level of control over the tentacles that Otto had, which is why she had the force field. Octavius, IMO, doesn't need such a crutch. At least, whenever I roleplayed or wrote for Ock, he considered the force field exactly that -- a crutch. My inner Otto has way too much pride to rely on such a thing. :)

Bonus panel; the last time Ock appeared in modern Marvel continuity, near the end of Civil War:

That should've been done the moment he approved the Sins Past storyline.

Thanks for the information, OctoHaz.
That's all I wanted to know.

Well that's perfectly understandable. And again, I can relate to it. I had not bought a 616 Spider-Man comic in over 2 years. I only started again last month.

And things seem to be picking up. Even if they method they used [the mind erasing deal with Mephisto] was ridiculous.

And holy crap...I just realized that this book isn't going to hit shelves for over two months. Oh, God...the suspense is going to drive me mad! Oo

I know. Thank god ASM is coming out three times a month.

We'll get more tid bits and snippets in the coming weeks. They are going to promote the hell out of this big 600th issue.

Ah, I see.

LOL! Well, I hope the execution of the story, assuming it's executed well, changes your mind.

I really hope none of us here are disappointed. We deserve a truly great Doc Ock story. I want all the Octavians here to be geeking out with happiness with this comic.

Haz, you are goddess. You don't post as often as we'd like you to, but when you do, you rock this lair with your awesomeness :)

Thank you for answering Jick's question so thoroughly and stylishly, too.

It came close. You should have seen the comics forum back in 2004.

It was CHAOS!

You're very welcome. :) It was long past time that I posted some scans anyway. :otto:

I'm very proud of my knowledge of Octavius' history. :)
