I'm glad you like it, mate. But can you put your post in spoiler tags, please? Just until tomorrow, then we know the issue is released everywhere.
Yes, sorry about that. I tried not to reveal anything "spoiler" like in my post.

Yup Doc Ock was pretty cool in this issue

And he actually has 8 tentacles, not 6 like we previous thought. This is because is whole body, except his head is wrapped in bandages. He considers his his body meaningless, just a shell for his mind.

That sounds extremely cool.

When you think about it, Ock doesn't really use his flesh and blood body for anything essential in the Spidey stories. So rendering it useless, and making him entirely dependant on a plethora of extra tentacles is a very interesting and creepy concept.

I'm very excited to see where they go with this.

I'm a bit of a purist, can you blame me?! :cmad: :cmad:

Well you can relax, my dear MP. According to Romita Jr, it's only a temporary design for Doc Ock:

The artist enthused that getting the chance to play with a slightly tweaked version of long-standing villain Doctor Octopus also provided a challenge. "I was given the instructions to go creepier. It's not a permanent version of Doc Ock. It's a present version, but I don't have a problem with it because it's a good story idea. It's interesting.

No prob.

So what would you rate #600 out of 10?

Well, I'm hlaf way through it actually, but so far I'd give it a 9/10, honestly. I mean, this is just great fun all around. Romita Jr.s art adds to that. :yay:

Ock just seems so...messed up. There's a certain panel that reminds me of the scene in Empire Strikes back when Darth Vader's mask is being put on him.

EEEeeeEEE *runs around in circles* I'm so excited for tomorrow so we can see it

8 tentacles? Weird, 12 limbs is too many

Guys I just found a pictire...and My God!

There's the link, my opinions are in the following spoiler tag.

What have they done to him?!?! He looks like darth vader, frail and beaten! When I get ahold of those people with my beating stick and newspaper bazooka...rawr

Another thing.....

Ock gets defeated, but he says that he's going to do GREAT and TERRIBLE things. So, this isn't the last of him. I think he's slowly dieing though..

That's kind of the point. His body is supposed to be frail. Hes evolved past that, he finds his body useless now. In fact he can't even use it, his arms and legs were wrapped up so they couldn't move. For all intents and purposes, his 4 new tentacles are replacing them his limbs.

If this issue is any indication, he's not going to die. Me thinks he will find a way to prevent this impending doom.

Regarding ASM #600...all in all, I didn't like it. The Doc Ock story at least. And my hunch about Spidey post OMD was right, it feels all wrong and eliminating the marriage was a tremendous mistake.
But I'll keep this strictly about the Doc Ock story. Spoilers ahead...you have been warned.

First, the good: John Romita junior remains an outstanding artist. He renders Spider-Man far better than McFarlane ever did. The plot moves along at a brisk pace, and the set up is nice, but much like the big reveal in the 1998 Godzilla remake, once we see the 'new' Doc Ock...ba-woooooshh, right down the toilet.

Now, the bad: OK, Otto now wants to do some good before he dies? Why? For years Otto has been a total badass because he doesn't give a damn about anybody but himself. This is a man who once tried to blow up New York with a nuclear warhead on general principle. We don't see any hint of the real Doctor Octopus until the story ends.
There are too many guest stars. This should've been a striaght up confrontation between Peter and Otto, reminicent of the brilliant Web of Death arc. And please, for the love of God, Jesus, and all the Saints in Heaven, can we please have at least one major event that doesn't involve Wolverine. He's become so overexposed that he sucks...hard.

Sigh...I think I've been reading comics too long.

Another thing about this new, diseased Doc Ock that bugs me: How long do you think it will be before he finds some miracle cure for his condition? And you know it'll be some cheezy, comic booky plotline involving cloning, magic, or something else Quesada decides to conjure up from his bulbous rear end.
And let's discuss the hype surrounding this story. Slott said he wanted to raise Ock up to a Doctor Doom level threat for this issue. Um...not quite. The Octobots and cyber-internet link were cool, and solid steps in that direction, but Ock has no sense of genuine menace here because he's wasting away. Doctor Octopus doesn't work as a freak show horror monster. This is the first time Otto has been given a new look that I had no desire to draw, and I miss the Armani suits now more than ever.

To sum up, it wasn't completely craptacular, but it serves as another example of Quesada's inability to tell quality stories with the characters he oversees.
Marvel needs a new Editor-in-Chief...now.

You're probably right, if you ask me. I mean
Ock is one hell of a genius, so I wouldn't be suprised.

My only complaint was how short the Ock story was. You'll love it, Joker. It was great. :otto:

^^ I actually found it to be a really decent amount of length. Also, yes, I agree, you will love it, Joker.

I don't know that I like that, it seems that he is going to turn himself completely into a robot, and the whole point of him was to be half and half...at least to me. I always thought that he needed the weakness of his human body to keep him grounded, so he doesn't become god or something. (Which, I know is his goal, but Marvel can't let that happen lol). If he totally eliminates the human portion, he will become too powerful, which sets him up to be stopped. Which would be terrible to all us Ock fans...

And @Brian:
Is he going movieock on us? I happen to like movieock better, but I see them as two completely different characters that, under no circumstances should cross paths. Movieock was a tragic fallen hero type thing, and comicock is a badass who has his own agenda. They should keep it that way...but I haven't read it, I'm only going off of spoilers at the moment, so feel free to totally disregard this :D

Thats IF he turns himself into a robot, which I don't think hes going to do. Me thinks he is going to do everything in his power to keep his physical mind intact. I think they might have him going down the route that Mr. Freeze went in the DCAU, where all that was left of Freeze was his head on a robotic suit. They should at least let Ock keep his body though.

Finally read this issue.

The main story was very good. Needless to say I enjoyed all the Doc Ock stuff the most. I like this new angle. He learns he's dying, and tries to use his intelligence to make some amends before he goes, but ultimately his own evil side sabotages that, and he ends up causing chaos. Even better was the he was not captured at the end, and escaped, promising revenge on Spider-Man by doing something really terrible next time.

His new look is a far cry from the Doc Ock we're all used to. So it is understandable why some people are having difficulty adjusting to it. But since it's only going to be temporary, I don't mind it at all. I found it very creepy. And Ock WILL cure himself somehow. No question about that. Let us not forget that he cured Spidey when he was dying during the Clone Saga.

I think the inclusion of Daredevil and the Avengers could have been omitted. They really served no purpose to the story, IMO. Human Torch was great though. He and Spidey had some fab dialogue.

The Aunt May wedding stuff was the least interesting part. I really don't care that May is getting hitched again. The only part I liked was when Peter called her his mom at the wedding.

Overall it was good, but it definitely didn't live up to the hype, IMO. As anniversary issues go, it's definitely head and shoulders above #300, #400, and #500.

Overall I'd give it 7/10. I wanted more Doc Ock in it. The scenes with Daredevil, the Avengers etc was just fluff.

That actualy sound like it could happen, if you ask me. Cool idea.

During the Clone Saga his mind was in a machine and hung around with Lady Ock in The Greatest Responsiblity.

I loved this issue. Loved it.

Thes best part is the knew dynamic that now exists between Spidey and Ock. Ock always thought of Spidey as a dimwit, he admired his courage and his character but not his intelligence, but in the battle of the minds Spidey wins. How is Ock going to react to that?

I really liked the cameos. The DD one served a purpose, Spidey has been revealing his identity to the NA and the FF but other than Johnny he is closest to Matt. It needed to be addressed. The NA cameo freed Spidey to go after Ock without abandoning the city. And Spidey/Torch by Slott is always welcome.

And around the net some people have said it's strange that Ock wanted to do good before he died. Don't confuse what Ock was doing with goodness. He was doing it because he needed the adulation before he died, nothing else.

The Stan Lee story was funny as hell, who hasn't felt like that shrink after reading comics?

Well, just read #600... and I feel very let-down, to be honest.

First off, the whole dying thing just annoys me. For one, it's been done -- and better -- in Spider-Girl; even his appearance in Spider-Man: Reign had more oomph than this. For another thing, the last time we saw Ock -- back in the Thunderbolts, before Steve Rogers died -- he was in perfect health!

The story felt rushed and short. Maybe if it was a 5-issue arc or took up all the pages of #600, I'd have time to get used to this new development... not to mention have more Ock-time as, for example, "Web of Death" during the Clone Saga.

I'm willing to buy him trying to do something good as a legacy; Ock has always been an egotist and a narcissist above all, and turning NYC into a smart city based on his design is nicely grand. But I don't like how it IMMEDIATELY goes pear-shaped, and I honestly hated that Spidey's brainpower outdid Ock's.

Otto is not a machine; his powers may be his brain and his tentacles, but the main thing I like about him is that he's a man as well. Physically ordinary, even average when you consider that most Americans are overweight.

And while there's a definite TO BE CONTINUED feel at the end, my pessimism tells me we'll be waiting another couple of years before we see Ock again. :P OK, maybe not that long.

In summary, I just felt it wasn't worth the wait. :(

Pluses: the banter was good ("Spidey goes to first base with Doc Ock" made me laugh out loud) and of course the return of Mary Jane makes me go YAY!

Basically, I liked everything EXCEPT the Doc Ock stuff.

So, meh.

So sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it, Haz :csad:

But nice to see Jack loved it.

One other thing about #600...

At what point did Peter Parker become such a *****e-bag? He sees Ock deteriorating before his eyes, reduced to little more than a diseased cyber-mummy and...he cracks jokes?

The Peter Parker I knew would've been horrified and would've at least offered to help Ock.
What is it about the Spiderverse that Marvels' current creative team can't handle, when Greg Weisman can do it with ease?

He didn't find out until the very last minute that Ock was dying. And when Ock told him, Spidey said he was sorry. Then Ock attacked him with his octobots when Spidey said he will probably spend the rest of his time in Rykers.

What is it about the Spiderverse that Marvels' current creative team can't handle, when Greg Weisman can do it with ease?

Overall this statement is definitely true regarding the last few years in the Spidey comics.

Well, I'll reserve torture upon those who have done what they have to Ock since it is a temporary situation. I still can't help but wonder if they are going to redeem themselves or make it terrible.

And what's this about spidey winning a mind game with Otto? He must have been very, very lucky.

@Venom: Yeah, I hope the If turns out to be a Not. I agree with keeping his body, it's part of who he is. He isn't Dr. Doom, after all :)

Seriously, I had to cheer myself up by watching episodes of "Spectacular Spider-Man". Finally saw "Gangland" in fact; I'd been putting off watching it because I was afraid of being disappointed. But, of course, "Gangland" is marvelous like everything else about SSM.

In regards to the comics, I just feel like I'd been waiting and waiting for a delicious dessert only to receive a moldy hot dog bun.

Feh.

Becareful guys. I haven't read it yet. I want to so bad though, but I don't live anywhere near a comicbook store or have the money to by it. This sucks royally.

Yeah, that bit was bull s***. It wasn't even a prolonged struggling of their intellects either. Ock and Spidey are supposed to be matched when it comes to smarts.

The story felt a little rushed in some parts, like there. Ock and Spidey could also have done with a bigger fight sequence, too. Ock had EIGHT friggin' tentacles. Spidey should have had alot more hassle dealing with him.

Gangland was fabulous, wasn't it. Pure vintage Doc Ock greatness.

"Treacheeeerrrrrrrry!!!!!!"

I can understand the disappointment of some of you. This was not in any way a traditional take on Doc Ock. And that was the point, I suppose.

I think some of it was just a little rushed. They should have cut out the stuff with Daredevil, Avengers, half of the Aunt May crap, and devoted a few more pages to Spidey and Ock's confrontation.

But I am pleased overall with what we got. But it didn't live up to the hype surrounding it. No way.

And for those of you who dislike Ock's redsign, just bare in mind that it is only temporary. The Ockster will inevitably find a cure for his plight.

Becareful guys. I haven't read it yet. I want to so bad though, but I don't live anywhere near a comicbook store or have the money to by it. This sucks royally.

That sucks, man.

Maybe you should avoid this thread for a couple of days. Everyone here is talking about it.

Any good scans of the good Doctor's new (temporary) look?
