Doctor Who - Not a Hugging Type of Thread - Part 19

Watched the episode last night. Missy was great and the Doctor rocking out on the guitar was a phenomenal scene. It's going to be interesting how the next episode plays out.

Is it possible Missy and Clara teleported before being "killed"? Bodies usually don't vaporize when blasted by the Daleks.

Missy had something hooked up, I bet. Doesn't make sense that she would goad the Daleks into blasting her if she didn't have a plan. Even if that plan involved instantaneously teleporting a completely innocent living human in her place at the last nanosecond, just so it can make a convincing skeleton shape.

Missy and Clara had teleporters, and Missy has survived being vaporized by energy weapons very recently. I'd say there's a strong chance they teleported to safety.

And as duplicitous as the Master typically is, even she'd hate the Daleks too much at this point to genuinely offer them herself and the Doctor's TARDIS. She also knows that there's no way the Daleks would trust her of all people. Her whole "recruit me or exterminate me" offer was disingenuous as hell.

"The Witch’s Familiar" I thought this was a decent enough conclusion with some good visuals.

Loved seeing a nod to Tom Baker and William Hartnell in Missy's flashback. I'm glad she explained how she survived the Daleks last episode and the Cybermen in "Death in Heaven". Clara and Missy have pretty good chemistry on screen and it's interesting watching them work off each other. Crazy seeing Skaro so full of Daleks and really cool to see so many classic versions pop up. The Doctor riding around in Davros' chair was pretty cool. I laughed when Missy pushed Clara into the sewers. The snakes enveloping the Doctor was disturbing. Missy killing the Dalek in the sewer was great and her line "I'm a Time Lady, that's how I golf" made me laugh. I liked seeing Capaldi revisit the moral from "Genesis of the Daleks" and struggle with that decision again. Creepy seeing Clara encased in a Dalek again and I kept expecting her to mention soufflé when she was reunited with the Doctor to let him know it was her. I thought Julian Bleach gave an excellent performance as Davros in this. I was not expecting the Doctor to willingly use regeneration energy on Davros like that, not a bad double switch I guess. The sonic sunglasses were a bit goofy though and nearly made me roll my eyes. Satisfying enough conclusion seeing the Doctor save kid Davros and introduce the concept of mercy to the Daleks.

It was a good conclusion to the first episode but it seems to be the same old same old with the Daleks being destroyed.

Not a fan of the Doctors new toy, it appears in the promo for the next episode and I already want it gone.

The Sonic Sunglasses are cool as a one off, but its too sily for me to want it all the time.

The first five minutes were just brilliant. Though, Missy in general was great this episode. Great to see the nasty side come out again.

Loved this episode, neat callback to Clara's first episode having her stuck inside the Dalek shell, loved the tension with all the stuff between the Doctor and Davros. Agreed on the glasses, hope they don't stick around too long, the Sonic Screwdriver is irreplaceable. The Doctor riding around in Davros chair was hilarious.

Witch's Familiar was mostly a treat but... I had a couple of issues.

The character stuff was good, the interplay between Davros and The Doctor was at times almost touching. I kinda figured where it was going though when the Doc's hand glowed, even the switcharoo. But until that point it was interesting, and I was wondering if we were seeing sincerity between the two. Missy/The Master and Clara were entertaining. I don't think I was quite as enamored by them as others but they held my attention and gave me some chuckles.

Being a fairly new convert to WHO I am always surprised at how emotional the show can make me, being that I never really watched the classic show outside of a few stories here and there.

My two hitches were this...

1.[BLACKOUT]While the Doctor planned to wreak havoc with the regeneration energy, this seemed terribly risky and without a doubt something that has to come back and haunt him later, and that's my problem... It's tailer made to be a problem later on and yet there's no mention of the probably cost. I mean... fine those Daleks in the sewers cause damage to the city... But once they are fully regenerated what then? Seems the Doc has swelled the ranks of his most hated foes to me. Was there a mention of this NOT being the case? If so, I missed it.[/BLACKOUT]

2. [BLACKOUT]This idea of a Time Lord/Dalek Hybrid... Is this from classic WHO lore? It's a big enough idea to be the focus for an arc unto itself I think. Or was it mentioned as a one off idea to gauge fan reaction? [/BLACKOUT]

Overall though I enjoyed the episode. The ending was a nice example of what makes the protagonist of WHO such an iconic creation.

I loved that scene. The other chair was a nice gag too.

Missy continues to be great with the way she acts and treats Clara. It's going to be interesting to see what happens with her. The callback to Clara as a Dalek and Missy's story of the Doctor were great. The entire Davros/Doctor scenes building up to the sunrise were excellent as well.

I wonder what the "confession" on the disc is?

You know, I wanna say Davros augmented the Dalek mutants during "Genesis of the Daleks" by using the Doctor's physiology as a template, but I might be thinking of an audio where Doctorman Allan did that during the creation of the Cybermen.

I absolutely adored the opening story. Still fresh in the mind, but it is a legit all-timer imo. Fun, smart, with real emotion. Finally, a great Dalek story in NuWho. Missy was somehow better then ever. Her interaction with Clara was hilarious. I don't know what my favorite bit with her was, but I loved it all.

My guess is that this will be the running plot throughout the season, especially since Missy made a proposal to the Daleks who cornered her at the end of the episode.

The only way to kick the character of Missy up to level 11 is for series 9 to end with her smiling wickedly as she caresses her relatively recent pregnancy bump.

The last minute repeat of the first two episodes had the distinction of being the least watched program on BBC1 the other day. 640k viewers less than half of what the timeslot got last week.

Final figure for Episode 1 6.54 million, lower than any episode last year.


6.54 million viewers and probably a 25%+ share of the audience still isn't too bad. Also that number does not include the 1.3 million BBC I Player views.


So there's no sign of trouble but the views are lower.
