Doctor Who - Not a Hugging Type of Thread - Part 19

I gotta say, I'm impressed with how strong this season has been. There weren't any mindblowingly stupid episodes, like "Kill the Moon" or "In the Forest of the Night." Even Mark Gatiss wrote a good episode.

I'm quite fond of Gattis's past episodes like Cold War and Victory of the Daleks but Sleep No More was the best of his efforts so far

It was scary with a really disturbing ending and some great bits like the Portal inspired AI

I think the opening two parter this year is one of my top five Dalek tales the show has done

Davros always makes Dalek stories more interesting. He's what happens when you cross a Dalek with an actual person. His motives aren't as clear cut as a Dalek's, because he works to his own agenda instead of just wanting to conquer and destroy everything. Everything about this season's 2-part opener was just plain personal, and you don't get that kind of vendetta from regular Daleks. The Daleks hate the Doctor for stopping them in the past, but it's not "Now that you have this new face, I realize that the monster who left me for dead on a battlefield in my childhood was you all along" hate.

I'm working my way slowly through Series 9. I thought the Under the Lake/Before the Flood two parter was fantastic. And worth having as two parts.

I thought Davros was much better written here as well than in his prior appearance in Stolen Earth and Journeys End with a bigger focus on how he's got a sharp and manipulative mind and knows how to use people with his attempts to trick the Doctor and playing the role of someone repentant and full of regret to try and play on the Doctor's sympathies

OK, now that was damned good. Capaldi was brilliant.

Gotta admit, i found Heaven Sent to be one brilliant piece of television. Best episode of this season for me and that says A LOT.

Next week is going to be insane

The doctor in the old console room was true

So I wonder if the doctor ditches his old TARDIS and gets a new one since Galifrey is back?

I don't think...
he'd ditch 'sexy' ever. As his trademark Police Box Tardis is stuck on Earth all graffiti'd up and removed by god knows how many years from when he has ended up, I figure the Tardis we will see him using in ep 12 is just another one from Gallifrey. Will probably get back to sexy soon enough.

Also Clara in some form will be back (either in his head like in this ep or for real) as there's a shot of her holding his hand. Her death as it stands seems monumentally meh to me. Killed saving no-one in the end as the lad would have been spared anyway.

Not sure on the Doctor proclaiming he is the 'hybrid' thing. They might be running with the McGann TV movie idea (which I didn't think was ever popular?) but he could just be lying (telling fibs is his speciality after all).

Anyways, looking eagerly to how they conclude this one.

Agreed. I've found a couple of episodes this season somewhat underwhelming (the last 2 in fact) but this one was a masterclass imo.

Just thinking of how many
times he had to literally die to finally crack through the crystal wall in that billion years makes my head spin. At least he'd only remember that last effort, lol.

I didn't understand any of that. At least how it jives with his behavior earlier involving the confession dial and searching for Gallifrey.

Was the one he picked up the same one Mayor Me took?

They are really letting Capaldi shine this season. Some really great performances.

Liked that they used somewhat that idea of teleportation. First saw that idea with the new TMNT comic. Still, loved the montage once he came to the realization. Chipping away over billions of years.

I do have to laugh, though. [blackout]Looking at the skull, I sort of jokingly thought that it looked like Capaldi. Guess I was right. [/blackout]

Everything about this episode was brilliant. It's going to be exciting to see him
finally back on Gallifrey
next week.

This was amazing, brilliantly executed story and Capaldi did an amazing job in this episode.

It took me a while to realize what was happening at the end, but when I got it, it was like :wow:.

This episode was phenomenal

Frightening, heartbreaking and tense and while I knew some of the ending thanks to spoilers that had been released for the final two episodes the reveal of the true nature of the Hybrid was a shock

And Capaldi was incredible I don't think many other actors could have carried an episode like this on their own

Yeah, Capaldi really made it work, would've been cool if some of the other Doctor's had had episodes like this with just them carrying the whole episode alone.

I just saw a spoiler-ish tv spot for the finale on BBC America. It featured

The return of Ashildr, more talk of the hybrid, the Doctor in front of Gallifreyan firing squad, and a shot of a Gallifreyan soldier reporting a regeneration in progress.

Edit: Found it on their Youtube channel.

[YT]Well obviously it can't be the doctor's regeneration since Capaldi is doing the Christmas special.[/YT]

I wonder if Rassilon is still calling the shots on Gallifrey now?

Yeah, Capaldi really made it work, would've been cool if some of the other Doctor's had had episodes like this with just them carrying the whole episode alone.

An episode like this for Eccleston probably would have been very intense indeed

Is Peter Jackson hinting at directing an episode of Doctor Who? He's a long time fan, worked with Sylvester and showed up in "The Five-ish Doctors"

I love the little in jokes.

-Jackson has a bookmarked copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Silmarillion with script notes

-"Doctor Who fans can be way more violent than Tolkien fans!"

Great episode. When I realized what was happening at the end, I was like :thud:. I thought last season wasn't as good as the ones before, but this season has been fantastic so far and they've really given Capaldi great material to work with. Can't wait for the finale!

They would have to give Jackson three episodes, though.
