Doctor Who - Not a Hugging Type of Thread

I always assumed that clicking your fingers was just another way to open the doors rather than lock/unlock the TARDIS. If the TARDIS is locked then clicking your fingers won't do nothin'.

Also, am I the only one surprised by the lack of media attention to the Master now being female? It feels like a relatively big step for the show and people have been complaining about a female Doctor since the show came back, and a female Master is the next best thing. Not many people seem to be talking about it.

Because now it is here barely anyone cares that they got partially what they wanted.

finally caught up, i was a few weeks behind
Holy **** at the ending to dark water

Can one be sure she is the Master and this isn't some sort of head fake?

Well, [BLACKOUT]K-9 did refer to Romana as Mistress[/BLACKOUT].

Could be a clever ploy on "Missy"'s part to mess with the Doctor's head by calling herself The Master.

Well ... that was confusing.

It may be cleared up in the second half, but I'm at a loss as to Missy's plan. So, firstly she "faked" the scientific discovery of the "three words" (or otherwise falsely engineered the discovery) to convince everyone wealthy enough to afford a grave plot to bury their dead friends and family instead of cremating them because Missy needs skeletons.

But, presumably only a very limited, elite and wealthy patrons were able to afford to have their dead friends and family stored in a fish tank in 3W's headquarters (which must have an entrance other than the cathedral and which are presumably Missy's TARDIS which has a number of entrances/exits throughout London or the world). And it is only those who are stored in a fish tank which have a Cyberman exo-skeleton. All the other skeletons buried all over the world appear to have no real value to Missy unless and until she can cover them with a Cyberman exo-skeleton, although it's unclear why the robotic Cyberman need a human skeleton.

Missy has also discovered a way to take a copy of the brainwaves of every recently deceased person and to store them in the Gallifreyan computer in which those brainwaves act out various programs based upon their pre-conceived ideas of personalities and souls.

If the brainwaves willingly elect to "delete" all their emotions, then their emotions are wiped and their emotion-free brainwaves/personality/soul is uploaded to a pre-existing Cyberman body as a perfect soldier (because, for some reason, the Cyberman simply couldn't be programmed to behave however Missy wants them to behave).

Missy then plans to use the ... thousands (?) of Cybermen from the fish tanks to take over the world and to go around harvesting the skeletons buried all over the world to also be processed and turned into Cybermen (presumably in some factories somewhere).

As far as master plans go (pun intended), this one seems a bit convoluted and overly complicated. I really don't understand why Cybermen need human skeletons and "wiped" human brainwaves. I also don't understand if the skeleton and brainwaves need to "match" or whether any skeleton can be used with any brainwave.

Anyway, the stuff with Clara was somewhat enjoyable. The key stuff was a little confusing after the "clicking fingers" trick was introduced. And The Master revelation was ... what it was and not much more at this stage.

Wow I loved the missy reveal! It blew my mind! Can't wait to see what this means for their rivalry and the doctors future.

It was easily the best episode of this season

I wasn't in on any rumours or spoilers before the episode so when she said 'Mistress' I immediately blurted
Romanna!!
Then felt a bit silly to have that theory undone in the next sentence, lol.

Whatever the case I hope Moffat doesn't just skip over some merited exposition on how Missy came to be, just what the deal is with her own brand of Cybermen and so on (his finale's have had a habit of leaving questions unanswered).

Cyber-eyes doors... I love that, nice touch...

This episode was good, like REALLY good.

Some really tense moments throughout. I'm loving this incarnation of the Master so far.

and the master seems like a cackling witch. where is the subtlety?

When has the Master in any one of his appearances even remotely approached something resembling subtlety.

Here's something funny to chew on:

Back in "The Sound of Drums," the Master playfully flirted with the Doctor a little bit. However, he made some homophobic remarks toward Captain Jack. Now that the Master is a woman, the first thing she did upon clapping her new female eyes on the Doctor was pin him against the wall and kiss him like his lips had the cure for whatever ails you (not to mention she once referred to the Doctor as her boyfriend, earlier this season).

It's starting to look like the Master was in love (or at least infatuated) with the Doctor, but didn't want to act on his gay feelings back when he was a dude.

I'm trying to imagine Roger Delgado's Master being infatuated with Jon Pertwee's Doctor, LOL...

I'm still wondering if the Doctor/Master headship is now canon. :hehe:

Delgado was definitely just antagonizing his old friend, but he had it bad by the time we got to Ainley.

I mean, do you really think the Master was trying to kill the Doctor in "Logopolis"? He just wasn't into the 4th Doctor's looks and hoped for a prettier regeneration.

yeah, even back then, I thought Ainley was a bit too smooth and smarmy in his take on the Master... now I know why, LOL... :woot:

ok finally saw the episode, holy hell if this twist stick, nice. its a fake out they better have something big planned

I wonder if Missy has some kind of sonic screwdriver...

well, she DOES have that flash-frier that she used on Doctor Chang...

Finally caught up with this. An impressive episode, and I appreciated the unfaltering ominous tone. I hope the next one keeps up the momentum.

I really really hope the next episode doesn't let me down, because there hasn't been a decent Master story since the 80's.

I just listened to "The Widow's Assassin." Hoo boy...

A little backstory:
Back in 1986, the entire TV season consisted of the 6th Doctor going on trial for all of his meddling throughout time and space. It turns out that when the Time Lords teleported the Doctor into the court room, he was in the middle of an adventure with Peri, and Peri died in his absence. At the end of his trial, the Doctor was informed that Peri hadn't actually died, but was rescued by King Yrcanos (Brian Blessed's character), and was living the rest of her days on Yrcanos' planet as his warrior queen.

The Doctor never actually followed up on that. He never checked up on Peri to see if she was happy. He just left the court room, sent his future companion Mel back to his older self, and went on to have more adventures with Evelyn Smythe, Charley Pollard Mila, and Flip Jackson. Then Flip took an extremely suicidal risk, and the Doctor suddenly remembered how Peri almost died, and finally decided to go check up on her.

And that's where "The Widow's Assassin" comes in. The Doctor wants to pick up where he left off with Peri, but she's not having it.

The resulting story is surprisingly funny. I didn't expect this to be one of the sillier Who stories, but really is. There's a murder mystery, a policeman that's a talking sheep, two prison guards whose birth names are actually Guard One and Guard Two, and a princess attempting to find a suitor through speed-dating.

The only downside to this whole thing is that, when all is said and done, Peri ends up experiencing zero character growth.

I liked the episode, and look forward to the continuation. I'm expecting some sort of twist. In an interview with MTV, Michelle Gomez said: "Nothing that you think is happening is happening… Nothing."
