R.I.P. Jane Baker (of Pip & Jane)

Colin Baker @SawbonesHex

So very very sad to learn that Jane Baker of Pip and Jane fame - Doctor Who writers from my era - has died. My thoughts are with Pip.

Aww, not Jane Baker. I love Pip & Jane's work, give or take one Rani story.

But she wore it WELL tho...

for some reason, she appeals to me much more this season... maybe because they're finally giving her some good material to work with...

I think she should have died as the impossible girl but most of last season, she was background noise.

Pretty much. Then again, Moffat's too much of a wuss to keep things he created dead

The Ponds say hello.

Well they don't, because they're dead and impossible to time travel too.

I'm glad Clara's still alive. She's actually a good character, even if she is too shoehorned into every important moment of the Doctor's life.

One thing I've noticed is that they're confident enough in Jenna's appeal to dress her up in some really dowdy-looking designs when it comes to her "real life" clothes. She really does resemble a public school teacher.

Amy never had to dress up in period clothing where ever the 11th doctor went

but Clara is basically cosplay fuel with all her costume changes

It's all part of Moffat's Scottish favoritism

Is Moffat in favour of independence? He poked fun at it in Deep Breath, though it might have just been in jest.

I can understand Clara dressing up for this. It was her idea to visit that time period, anyway. It was her way of fangirling.

The over-representation of Scotland by the BBC has become something you hardly notice unless you look for it, but it will have to change if (as is likely) Scots vote to separate from the UK on the 18th. Will its absence then be noticed?

Who should be the first post-separation Doctor? We have recently had two Scots out of three; I doubt that will happen again.

Ofcourse he is

Again, sounds like he's making fun of it.

I don't think much will change. The BBC is still supposed to function in Scotland should they vote to secede in 2016.

I kind of hope the next Doctor is Irish, personally. It's new, but a lot of people don't see the Irish as properly "foreign", so still in the comfort zone of the British Isles.

Moffat was making some fun of it in Deep Breath as well, with the Doctors comments about his eyebrows being 'independently cross' and probably want to cede from the rest of his face to set up their own independent state (and his "I'm Scottish!! I can complain about things!!" line)

So I dunno if he is pro or no on the matter, but he isn't adverse to having a little fun with the subject, or the Scots in general.

Whatever the vote up North next week it I can't see it making any difference to the castings. English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, all good imo as long as the accent (should they keep their native one) isn't too strong (My Dad's from Ireland and I can barely understand some his relatives as their Kerry accents are so strong).

Watching the Robin Hood episode right now. Loving this. Capaldi is killing it on every level.

What are all the levels said killing is occurring on?

Every. Single. Level.

Ever. :cmad:

The BBC continuing in Scotland depends on if the BBC trust and execs want to cut a deal with an independent Scotland to co-produce television, radio ect with the SNP's proposed new Scottish national broadcaster called Scottish Broadcasting Service with ongoing access to a independent Scotland's media market.

Alternatively the SNP's plan is to have a contractual arrangement with BBC Worldwide Ltd in order to secure continued availability of BBC services in Scotland.

Nothing is a guaranteed yet though.

It's hard to determine the truth, because the SNP has always promised that everything will change while nothing will change, while rebutting whatever the Westminster government (with whom it will have to negotiate) says on any particular issue.

Whatever the outcome, I can't see a situation where English license fee payers fund media which is heavily populated by Scottish actors in Scottish situations. I don't want to turn this into a political point, but I think it is probable that this would be resented.

It won't affect Capaldi, because people have taken to him already. But I can't imagine that there would be a post-separation Scottish Doctor. If anything, we are overdue for a Welsh Doctor, particularly considering the long association between the show and BBC Wales.
