Doctor Who - Not a Hugging Type of Thread

I must be the only person who guessed the architect at the same time as the Doctor.

I thought it was pretty obvious throughout the episode that the architect would be the Doctor. It is one of those timey-wimey twists that Moffat just cannot resist.

Anyhow, GREAT episode. Easily the best of the series, right up there with Robots of Sherwood. I notice a trend; episodes that allow Capaldi to be the Doctor trump those that require him to be a caricature of the Doctor if he was "teh dark and grittyz!!!"

This Doctor definitely has some edge, but it shouldn't come at the expense of who the Doctor is and this episode mixed both worlds perfectly.

Nothing about Twelve has been "teh dark and grittyz!!!" anyway. Seven is still far and away the darkest Doctor.

Absolutely loving this series of Doctor Who. Whilst I've loved every incarnation of the Doctor since it's relaunch, (admittedly I'm not up to scratch on the Old Who stuff) Capaldi is certainly the Doctor I enjoy the most and I think as time goes on he will absolutely own the role.

I think people forget that Seven was the darkest Doctor because he was always playing the spoons and mixing his metaphors in that silly little voice. It makes it easy to forget he blew up a planet, killed a family of gods, and used his companion as a chess game piece. And that's before he took an even darker turn in the novels they wrote in the 90's.

Don't blink. Didn't think. Don't look. In doctor who if you see an alien don't do anything :-)

and the one times he tells you to listen, nothing is even there.

Don't Blink

Don't Breath

Listen!

What next Moffat? Don't Speak?

There's already a monster where if you LOOK at it you have 66 seconds to live

Robots of Sherwood is my favorite episode of the season, thus far. I really did not like "Listen." At all. Last night's was pretty good. I have no complaints.

Question: Was Time Heist an absolute riot of an episode? Answer: Yesyesyeysyesyes.

12 is so good. "I was hoping for minimalism, but I think I came up with magician!"

Capaldi has really brought the mystery back to the Doctor. His willingness to accept a person's sacrifice and be as blunt about it as possible is very 7-like and his very sarcastic, almost teasing friendship with Clara is very much like 6.

Sometimes 12 has shades of 7 but 7 is still far and away the dark Doctor. The guy basically put together a hit list of enemies and started picking them off one-by-one.

I agree with this, they nailed the balance this episode. I hope going forward that 12's characterization is similar to what we saw here.

"Listen" is still my favorite episode of the series so far. Although I really liked this one as well. I figured the Architect would be the Doctor pretty early on--the first time the Doctor said he hated the Architect. Same twist Moffat pulled with the Dream Lord a couple series ago, basically. Plus, who else would the Doctor submit himself to being a cog in a greater scheme for? But other than that, the episode was good. I liked that the Doctor only seemed to be sacrificing people left and right. For all the talk of how much darker Capaldi is because he abandoned Clara and sacrifices people and such, he turns out not to have done all those things more often than not. He's just more of a schemer than he lets on, as opposed to Smith, who was all improvisation 90% of the time.

I thought it was a bit crap, though it was worthwhile as an exploration of this Doctor's MO. Capaldi is an absolute star. He brings more gravity to the role than we have seen since the 1970s.

Yup. McCoy is best Dark Doctor

Can anyone help me out with what Classic Who episodes I would watch that has the best stories and best represent the characteristics of each of the doctor?

I've already seen the very first episode for the First Doctor, though I think I need more than just that; Tomb of the Cybermen for the Second, Genesis of the Daleks for the Fourth, Terminus and Caves of Androzani for the Fifth, and of course the 90s movie for the Eighth.

So I still need to see an episode from the Third, Sixth and Seventh and more of the First.

Loved this bit which evokes Tucker.

Capaldi is unbelievably good, and I'm not just writing that out on autopilot. He is. Loved how 12 called the bow-tie embarrasing, too. :woot:

Heh, calling the bow tie embarrassing was great.

Also: "I was hoping for minimalist, but I think I came out with magician..."

I can't make any definitive choices for the Third Doctor, as there's just too many good ones, but for the Sixth Doctor, the only story that I enjoyed out of all his adventures is Attack of the Cybermen... as for the Seventh Doctor, my favorites are Remembrance of the Daleks, Silver Nemesis and Battlefield...

a really good one of the First Doctor is Dalek Invasion of Earth...

I was just waiting for him to slip a "shut the ****itty up up!" :hehe:

I wasn't a huge fan of Time Heist, although I still enjoy watching Capaldi as The Doctor. I'm just not sure the scripts are really giving him the chance to shine? Or maybe it's the scripts which are enabling him to shine as well as he does?

A query I had about Time Heist is the fate of the planet. The Doctor saved the two hammerhead shark/minotaur creatures, but did he leave everyone else to die on the planet as a result of the solar flares? Obviously, the wealthiest woman in the universe had her own nearby escape shuttle, but I'm guessing at least 90% of the population of the planet wouldn't have been able to make it to an escape shuttle. It just seemed a little odd to have those scenes of The Doctor's gang of bank robbers celebrating when an entire planet had been destroyed.

The First Doctor: The Daleks, The Aztecs

The Second Doctor: The War Games

The Third Doctor: His entire first season

The Fourth Doctor: Ark In Space,Terror of the Zygons, Pyramids of Mars, Seeds of Doom, Robots of Death, Talons of Weng Chiang, City of Death

The Fifth Doctor: Earthshock

The Seventh Doctor: Curse of Fenric
