Doctor Who - Not a Hugging Type of Thread

This IS a nice twist in one way. By now people have come to expect some kind of big (and at times over complicated) plot twist. That's just Moffat's style. So a lot of people were thinking "it cannot be this simple, there's got to be something more." And then he faked us all out and made it exactly what it appeared to be. The simplicity of it WAS the twist.

Of course nobody really thought it was going to be as simple as Missy being the Master. Every single year, fans guess somebody is the Master or the Rani. They never are, so we're used to ignoring those theories.

In this case, all that happened was we threw a pot of hot noodles at the wall, and a single strand actually stuck for once.

Is it partly set up to prepare the ground for a female Doctor?

Who the hell knows? Moffat only has one more series, so we probably won't get the Thirteenth Doctor until someone else is in charge. He's set up the possibility of the next Doctor being non-white (see: River's regenerations) or a woman. It's up to the next person to decide what happens next.

I think so. I'm sure Moffat realizes he shouldn't do it, but the revival will be ten years old next year. Heck Clara has been called Doctor 2.0

Bringing back the older Doctor young companion dynamic has been great, but I think a female Doctor is the next logical step in bringing new dynamics to the show and not letting it settle into a rut creatively.

I don't know if 12 will be the one to do it. Seems more like a 14 or 15.

Who knows really? However, Moffat has kinda laid the groundwork for a potential female Doctor to be introduced down the line.

I severely doubt that. Not after the regeneration limit got defaced

Yeah, Moffat doesn't really see himself as incapable of making a huge change. It's a question of whether he wants to make the change at all, and that question is moot because I doubt he'll be sticking around long enough to write Capaldi's regeneration anyway.

It's starting to look like the Master was in love (or at least infatuated) with the Doctor, but didn't want to act on his gay feelings back when he was a dude.

I guess on Gallifrey, when you go to conversion therapy, you really go to conversion therapy.

I don't think the show has shied away from socially liberal viewpoints. We have seen a number of gay relationships, and most heterosexual relationships have been multiracial. If there was a reluctance to give the Master a homosexual attraction to the Doctor, it probably stemmed from a concern that having a gay villain would be perceived as homophobic.

TARDISArchives' early, spoiler-free review of the finale.

Sounds good to me.

The people who attended a screening of the finale earlier this week have hinted at a tiny little surprise for this Saturday involving the title sequence.

The Doctor's eyes are replaced by the Clara's

Yeah I have to agree with Manic, Moffat should go next season, he's done enough for the show and its time for someone else to carry on. He's set up a future for the show what with the new regenerations and the hunt for Galifrey.

With a new doctor (and I can't believe we're talking about this already) I would say we go with a non-white Doctor, mainly cos everyone would expect a woman what with the Master. I honestly feel it would be a bigger deal to a have non-white Doctor than a female Doctor and I don't mean that as a bad thing more as I said, no one's talked about it as much as a female doctor so it would be a shock especially after Missy.

2bh I just hope the Cybermen are dealt with better than they have in this episode. I would like to see them talk and not be a puppett for someone else

Re: race/gender change, I think it should happen one day, but not until the 14th one at least. But the Doctor should always be British; I believe that is essential to the thematic construction of the character. (The actor can be from anywhere, but the role should be played British).

Does the Doctor have to be human in aspect? Why do all Time Lord variations correspond directly to racial/gender variations among humans?

Unfortunately, all the actors who are sentient spore clouds are currently tied up on Terrence Malick projects, and you know how those are just going to drag on and on.

I suppose that's why we have never seen any extra terrestrial beings in Doctor Who.

An American woman played the Doctor once. Sorta.

In the alternative universe in Big Finish's "Exile" audio, the 2nd Doctor ran away from his trial, committed suicide to regenerate, and this time turned into American born (but English raised) Arabella Weir instead of Jon Pertwee. She went into hiding in the late 20th century, using Susan's established identity.

If fans don't mind another 50-something Doctor when Capaldi leaves, I'd love for Alexander Siddig to take on the role.

In all seriousness though, the appeal of Dr. Who is his combination of the familiar (eccentric English scientist/teacher/professor) with his fundamental alien nature. You make the next Doctor a Silurian or something and half of that equation is gone.

It's just not Doctor Who unless you can imagine the Doctor attempting to fix everything with posh English civility and/or tea.

I suspect that after Capaldi, they will want to "re-calibrate" the series by going with another Tennant/Smith kind of young eccentric, then maybe for the 14th they will consider race or gender switch.

I think that, after Capaldi, they should jump straight into having a non white and/or non male Doctor.

Preferrably non-male.

I think bringing the Time Lords/Gallifreyans back into NuWho is the next major re-calibration.

After that or at the same time, a woman should become the next Doctor.

If Moffat brings them back next season then the 13 Doctor should make the switch.
