lol wut?Exclusive: Hannibal Gobbles Up Molly Shannon
by Michael Ausiello and Kimberly Roots
Mary Katherine Gallagher, meet Hannibal Lecter.
Saturday Night Live alum Molly Shannon has nabbed a top-secret guest role in NBC’s upcoming drama Hannibal, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Though details on the funny lady’s visit to cannibal-land are sparse, we can report that the guest spot is for one episode with the potential to recur.
The former Not Ready for Primetime Player has been very busy as of late. She’s recently had stints on Web Therapy, Up All Night and The Middle, and she landed a recurring role on the upcoming second season of HBO’s Enlightened. She also currently can be heard voicing Wanda the werewolf in the big screen animated flick Hotel Transylvania.
Like Hannibal‘s Caroline Dhavernas, Chelan Simons and Ellen Greene, Shannon has previously worked with showrunner Bryan Fuller: She played candy emporium owner Dilly Balsam in Fuller’s Pushing Daisies.
Hannibal, a contemporary thriller based on characters from Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon, is slated to premiere at midseason.
Hannibal Exclusive: Gina Torres Is Jack's Wife!
Another week, another killer piece of Hannibal casting.
Gina Torres is joining NBC’s contemporary Hannibal Lecter series as the wife of Laurence Fishburne’s G-Man Jack Crawford, TVLine has learned exclusively.
Like Hannibal‘s Caroline Dhavernas, Molly Shannon, Chelan Simons and Ellen Greene, Torres — who will juggle the recurring gig with her full-time job on USA Network’s Suits — previously worked with Hannibal exec producer Bryan Fuller: She played beautiful grifter Lila Robinson in Fuller’s Pushing Daisies. The actress also has a connection to onscreen spouse Fishburne — she’s married to him!
Hannibal, which is based on characters from Thomas Harris’ Red Dragon, centers on the budding relationship between FBI agent Will Graham (played by Hugh Dancy) and his mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) – who are re-introduced at the beginning of their budding relationship. It’s slated to bow at midseason.
I thought this whole idea was stupid at first but it's starting to grow on me. I wasn't expecting Lecter to be working with Graham like that. I haven't read Red Dragon in years and I don't remember that happening, but oh well, the TV show can deviate and I am glad they are keeping it in Red Dragon territory.
I'm wondering what timeslot this will get. I'm guessing wednesdays at 10, after Chicago Fire has sunken even further into the ratings ****ter.
Part of the backstory of Red Dragon was Hannibal helped Graham investigate a murder (before Graham realized Hannibal himself was the murderer).
It's how they met.
The show is probably expanding on it quite a bit by the sound of things, but it does have basis in the book.
