Dreamworks/Paramount's Ghost In The Shell - Part 2

I've been pondering the situation and I like the tactic Death Note took. The film is set in America which is majority white (for now) and thus has a white lead. I don't object to that tactic, I don't see it as white washing because I just see it as an American version of that story. Same with The Departed.

I just don't like the idea of talking everything from Asian culture and setting it in Asia but have it star a white person thing. I just think that's super uncool. So yeah if they had to make a Ghost in the Shell movie and wanted it to star a white lady then I would have preferred it be set in America.

There's nothing to discuss because you people HAVEN'T SEEN IT. I don't discuss films with people who have not seen it.

I would like to. There is deep subject matter to be discussed with this film, there's just no one here to discuss it with. It baffles me.

Eh, there are interesting kernels that the film kind of throws out there, but never really does anything. Personally, I would love a sequel that focuses on Section 9 stuff, while kind of asking about who the Major is, [BLACKOUT]how much is Motoko and how much is Mira.[/BLACKOUT]

Disney would do a better job though at least terms of being a fun and cool film with a strong supporting cast.

Well, Marvel Studios might as there is a difference.
This would more than likely be one of Disney's bombs whenever they attempt to do something 'original' or more niche.

So a 7.66mil Friday for maybe like a 20-21mil weekend. Well the film is a flop domestically but overseas should be much better. Still kinda an embarrassing domestic debut for a film with a 110-130mil budget and as much marketing as it had. I mean the marketing was amazing but it was decently plentiful.

Yeah, kind of disappointing. But, they were kind of banking on ScarJo's star power abroad, though.

They were banking on her star power domestically as well. Clearly this was not just an international play. I'm not saying that international won't "save it" it might very well do that but it's failure in North America is not anything to just gloss over.

I've had a change of heart guys. I actually support the suppression of Asians in Hollywood now. I mean it's not like we contribute anything good to American cinema anyway. Plus, a lot of us chew with our mouths open! Yuck!

Edit: April Fools!!!

It takes a big man to admit that.

I know...its something that I've always struggled with. I would always get picked on because of the way I eat :oldrazz:

I don't really blame Scarlett Johansson for Ghost in the Shell failure in North America. I blame the studio getting a style over substance director. This was never going to be a 200 million grosser anyway but I do think it could have gotten over a 100mil if it had garnered better reviews. And the trailers should have been better as well because they gave you no reason to care about what was happening. It just looks like a shallow action movie to me.

Isn't it time that we put the Snow White and the Huntsman director out to pasture?

That time has long since been upon us, executives just aren't getting it. But yeah, I do agree this could've been far bigger in NA had word toward it been more favorable. I also don't think Scarlett Johansson being the lead is what hurt it more so than it (per what I've heard iterated the most) doesn't offer anything new. Visually, I hear it's very nice but overall it manages to offer little to nothing we haven't seen done before and better.

Main reason it failed - after 20 years old '95 film and 15 years old The Matrix, it brings absolutely nothing new or interesting. Add there lobotomized piece of **** story and style over substance direction. Lucy, despite being **** too, felt like it was trying to do something interesting.

Here in Poland there were maybe 20 people in the cinema besides me. Logan was packed when I saw it and I went a week after premiere

Anime is not as popular in North America as its fans want to believe. General audiences don't give two craps about someone's favorite anime movie or show. That's part of the reason why ScarJo was cast in the lead role in the first place: big name actress recognition (though, I think it's up for debate that actor recognition doesn't play a factor in box office success anymore).

I was not expecting this movie to be a hit, so consider me not surprised by the estimated numbers.

I don't see anyone believing anime is super-popular. Especially considering anime industry is in deep crisis at the moment.

lol it hasn't failed at least not yet, but it's international BO has to be extra impressive to make up for these weak domestic estimates.

You were right about it being lobotomized. The diving scene without the diving gear just killed me.

I think a movie can be really good even it doesn't bring something "new". They just didn't make a good movie and gutted the original story and it's themes.

It's a flop in North America. That's what I was talking about.

Your right, it's looking like North american is done already which is disappointing, yeah the international box office could very well Save this movie but I wanted an all round solid performance because I hoped this could be the movie to launch anime/manga adaptations as a legit genre in the west.

This movie could still be the blade/X-MEN 1 for anime movies but it's an uphill battle now.

Clearly the marketing failed the film domestically.

Boss Baby's marketing has helped it opening higher than expected and Ghost is opening much lower than expected. Audiences saw the ads, were confused or indifferent and just ignored it.

Maybe it does well enough overseas for Paramount to luck into a new franchise.

"New" in a sense "interesting". Pathetic premise "they didn't save your life, they stole it" + miscast ScarJo doing what she does in every single film of late didn't impress people enough to care.

When I heard the line "everything they told you was a lie" I knew it was going to be generic.

The very first marketing was odd, but then buzz seemed to pick up after the Enjoy the Silence trailer. The later trailers with the cliché generic revenge/conspiracy elements hurt it though.

Had it stayed with the more mysterious suspense style from the Enjoy the Silence trailer it would have helped.

I hate to say it, but from what I have seen in social media there has also been both a SJW crusade against the film over casting, while at the same time an Alt Right anti-ScarJo crusade over her being anti-Trump. Considering what interesting political and social times we are living in, I suspect this had a bigger impact than I initially expected.

Of course the mediocre reviews and negative word of mouth have also played a major role.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Star power really isn't a thing anymore. Big name actors have flop movies all the time and people won't just turn up for anything because of the actor anymore.

Anime and video game movies are still a nut Hollywood has yet to crack with great success.
