They have to make up for the $4 billion dollar purchase price.

They already made their 4 Billion. Think about it. They bought not only the movie rights but one of the biggest if not the biggest special effects house that is providing services for other studios both on visual and sound. Plus all the merchandise.
I always thought actually that 4 billion for Lucasfilm was a steal.
They bought pixar for 7 Billion and pixar is no Lucasfilm.

I knew somebody would post some early numbers from BOT tonight so I came to look.

So we are basically at $600m already. It could pass Avatar by next Monday. :funny:

Well even though Episode I is considered by many as the "worst" Star Wars movie, it still as of last week was still the highest grossing domestic and WW out of the franchise.

And yes inflation does have to be taken into account. Which is why no movie has technically been as successful as Gone with the Wind after inflation.

Yeah while the thing is that if you look at ever star wars movie they have all been very successful. I think ever star wars movie has ended up being number 1 in box office for the year the movie came out. When it comes to inflation I don't think there is a fair way to judge things. There are just to many things that can make a difference. I mean the international market is bigger then it used to be and ticket prices are higher and you have IMAX. But at the same time you have things now that keep people from going to the movies like Netflix, video games ect. Also I don't know how many movies come out per year now compared to say when gone with the wind came out but I beat there are way more movies in a year now coming out compared to back then witch means you have more options for movies to go to. Because off those things if gone with the wind was out today I don't think it sales has many tickets has it did back then. The only fair comparesion really when it comes to movies is comparing movies that came out in the same year like comparing TFA to Jurassic world.

I sometimes forget that Disney owns like everything with ABC, Family, ESPN etc. So I'm sure they did save more.

I had no idea in till a few weeks ago that Disney owned ESPN. I thought it was odd they did a lightsaber show thing on ESPN. I was like you wouldn't think they would show something like that on that kind of chanel. Then a few days latter I found out they owned ESPN. Is there any thing that Disney doesn't own lol.

How many films have you seen in your life? I mean, Transformers film, Adam Sandler films, Uwe Boll films, all of those are truly bad films, naming Titanic, which was an impressive achievement on many technical levels, as one of the worst films seems weird.

While I find titanic to be 2 hours of like nothing and like a hour of people drowning so darn boring. I also hated and have Django on my list of top 5 worst movies of all time list to but yet ever one loved that movie so what do I know lol.

I think both sides are very relevant.

I actually do agree with you on merchandising. I think that if Sony had control of the merchandising rights, we'd be getting an Amazing Spider-Man 3. Hell look at what Disney does. Tron: Legacy did okay, but not great. But with underwhelming Tron sales, it didn't give Disney the extra push needed to go forward with Tron 3. Meanwhile, Cars is one of Disney's lowest performers when it comes to Pixar films, but it is one of Disney's best performers when it comes to merchandise. Hence why we're getting Cars 3. If Sony had control of the merchandising rights to Spider-Man, they could have easily justified Amazing Spider-Man 3, even with the disappointing box office results.

But they others also bring up a good point in advertising. While Star Wars was indeed everywhere, most of the Star Wars advertising came down to licensing deals with other partners and working with other Disney owned entities. Add in the brand name associated with Star Wars, the Force Awakens got maximum exposure for cheap. While the Amazing Spider-Man 2 also associated with licensing partners, it was nowhere near the level of what Disney did with the Force Awakens. And they relied far more on more expensive traditional styles of advertising. Sony Pictures also doesn't have sister companies like LucasFilm did with ABC, ESPN, etc. to lower costs of traditional advertising. I do think the advertising budget for the Amazing Spider-Man 2 helped drag down the film, on top of blowing a lot of money, it wasn't very effective in dragging people out to movie theaters, the Spider-Man franchise continued its process of declining returns.

Yeah mechidise makes a big difference and I never thought about the sister companies like you said so good point.

Week 3 once school is back will be interesting.

It's going to slow down it's pace because the holidays will be over. Don't get me wrong it will still be making a lot a money but the super incredible weekday numbers will be over.

I figure as much, I'm just wondering how big the daily drops will be. Hopefully the weekends will still be good.

Yeah it will be interesting with school back and also by then most people will have probly seen the movie. I wonder if we may get more like a 60% drop starting next week.

Would he even take it back now? Who wants their ex back when they are a floppy failure? 😂

I hate episode 1 and 2 liked 3 a lot but 1 and 2 where still pretty darn successful and made a lot of money.

I was implying that George wouldn't take Star Wars back because NOW it's a failure. Obviously joking of course.

Already #10 all time WW.
So is it too soon to call JJ the franchise revitalizer?

Very few thought that Trek 09 would garner great reviews and gross over 257 million in North America (Trek isn't remotely popular overseas so what it did was fine) clobbering Wolverine which had the better release date by far.

The Force Awakens was expected to be huge as it got closer but very few were expecting 900-1billion in North America and the reviews speak for themselves.

Yeah why not the movie is going to break the North American record and going to most likely make at least 2 billion world wide and got a 94 RT score and most fans love it to. So what else can you ask for?

Ignoring the various think pieces telling you why the 'movie sucks' the consensus has been damn good.

Honestly I can't think of one film that doesn't have think pieces on why it sucks. That's just the nature of the beast, there will never been a total consensus on any piece of art.

That's why I try not to give a **** about opinions of films that I like. There are popular well reviewed films that I don't give a crap about as well. Honestly I think it's pathetic when these people with popular websites write up these "here's why I, a person whom is smarter than you filthy norms, do not like insert popular well reviewed movie here," think peices. I think people like that are just as pathetic as blind fanboys who can't stand any criticism of their popular thing. Nolan and MCU zealots come to mind.

Yeah no matter how much people love a movie there are always going to be some people that hate the movie but yeah almost ever one loves or like this movie so its over all reception is great. Nothing is 100% loved or like and yeah there are a lot of movies I hate or think are ok that are consider great that I don't understand how people can like. There are also a lot of movies I love or like that are mostly consider bad or just ok and I have no idea why people hate or just don't understand the creatisime. Ever one has different opinuns so its impossible for something to not have at least a few people that don't like it.
