I don't defend the Hobbit films but I can definitely enjoy them a lot. They are nothing on LotR but with the dearth of my type of fantasy in cinema and with them taking place in the same universe, I'm happy to rewatch them along with LotR as part of the marathon. I watch the prequels too in my SW marathon. I like the lore being expanded and there are positive new elements even to the ****test of the films lol.

OK. I'll stop :bdh: (though I'd rather take it out on Jackson).

There are hardcore fans of the books who have listed all the things wrong with the films, and I agree with many of those points. But I can still enjoy those films (a lot) in spite of it all.

Hopefully there is not going to be too much defending needed for this upcoming Star Wars trilogy. I wonder where people will regard it when all is said and done against the OT.

Per ERCboxoffice:

As expected, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS will not lose a single screen in its third week of release. Holding steady at 4,134.

Ha, no way any theater manager is letting that thing go.

Not while it's bringing in well over 100M per week. JW lost about 500 screens in it's 3rd week.

I'd see TFA again before anything being released until the end of January.

I am looking forward to see Deadpool and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies in February.

I was just wondering what the highest weekend gross in January was. I think it was American Sniper 100M+ on MLK weekend and opening at 89M (actually not an opening, but an expansion I believe). I'm wondering if TFA could challenge here. Technically this weekend is a holiday weekend, but I'm not sure it really adds anything to the coffers (people tend to want to hang at home on the 1st I think).

I tend to agree. I think I'll see 5th Wave, but the others don't really interest me.

Well I'm seeing Hateful Eight in the roadhouse 70MM edition and The Revenant. It's not all about Star Wars, well it is, but there's these other things too..

Yes, like Rogue One!

Well, record for New Years Day is $25.2 million (Avatar). I feel confident predicting that one will fall. Record for third weekend is $68.49 million (ibid) which TFA should crush.

I think it has my record for views at 10 (this might not be exact, could be slightly inaccurate in either direction) for FotR, and 4 for TTT and RotK. All trilogies have weaknesses but I think LotR has less than most. Whichever is deemed to be the weakest entry of the 3 is still very strong for a weakest entry.
RotK just doesn't work for me. FotR is one of my favorite films of all time, and I love TTT.. But RotK turns me off something bad. I'd take the land of the teddy bears over it. Well, mainly because of Luke and Vader.

Star Wars will crush both of those easily

I'll probably check those out too.

It was an expansion, but Sniper did 99% of its business in 2015. TFA will have shed some of its screens by January 15, but I doubt it'll hold enough to beat AS's $89M 3-day/$107M 4-day grosses.

TFA is doing amazing business, and if it makes $90M-$100M on New Year's weekend that's an amazing hold. But it's going to lose screens at least when 13 Hours and Kung Fu Panda 3 hit.

$900M domestic is a tremendous haul, especially for a franchise as long-lived as Star Wars.

Tremendous? It's ****ing phenomenal. The fact it's made in less than two weeks domestically what it took Avatar months to get is nothing short of incredible.

Abrams must be sitting back in his chair with some iced tea thinking, "I ****ing did it."

Outside of some expansions for award seasons like Carol, Kung Fu Panda 3 is the next movie I care about.

Abrams had a lot on his shoulders. Nobody should make any mistake about that. These directors who take on these big franchises have a ton of pressure on them. Good thing Fox wasn't making this film.

I like a lot of Fox films but I watched Fantastic Four 2015 yesterday so I feel like taking a shot at them.

I love the first two. Real love letters to martial arts cinema from the East. They are all really beautiful.

It is weird with Dreamworks, because the HTTYD and Panda series are at all whole different level from everything else they produce. They almost feel more like Pixar.
