The Force Awakens Early Star Wars 7 Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 2

It's a way of leveling the playing field in terms of comparison of older movies vs. movies of today.

And I do agree there are many factors contributing and going against them as you said television, video games, the internet as well as even the release of vhs/dvd/blu-ray. You can also bring up societal and financial differences. Gone with the Wind had average ticket prices of $0.23. Today the average ticket price is over $8.00.

The only way you could see Star Wars when it came out was in the theaters. It took 5 years for it to be released on VHS. A year before Jedi.

Even fast forward to the 90s. It sometimes took almost a year for theatrical releases to come to home video. Now if it's half a year, that's a long time.

Gone with the Wind's "epicness" paved the way for other movies. Yes maybe if Gone With the Wind was released today, it may not have done as well but it was a product of it's time, like Star Wars in 1977, Titanic in 1997 and Avatar in 2009.

If there was no Star Wars in 1977 and say TFA just came out, it might not have done as well.

I tend to agree that in terms of box office that it's not a perfect science to compare but it allows us to at least put how well some older movies did in perspective.

Yeah movies come out much faster from theater to DVD then they did in the old days. In the old days it would take like a year for a movie to go from theater to DVD or VHS. Now its like 5 months and because of that movies used to stay in theaters much much longer to. I don't know how this compares to the older days but where I live most movies are in theaters for around 1.5 months and then are pulled. The longest I can remember a movie being in theaters was frozen it was out for like 4-5 months.

The thing that was crazy was the first star wars the year it came out made around 700 million world wide and the second highest movie that year was like 200milion. So star wars made like 3.5 times more then the second highest movie did that year that is just nuts! Also when it comes to TV there is way more coverage for sports then there used to be witch I am sure keeps some people from going to the movies.

Wow. You hit virtually EVERY point I've made in the past about this adjusted for inflation stuff. I thought I was alone in the wilderness.

I may be crazy, but now I've got company. :oldrazz:

Better to be crazy then normal:woot:

27-28 Million Wednesday according to RTH of BOT.

Is that another record?

I love the first two. Real love letters to martial arts cinema from the East. They are all really beautiful.

It is weird with Dreamworks, because the HTTYD and Panda series are at all whole different level from everything else they produce. They almost feel more like Pixar.

You saying that they fell almost like Pixar makes me fell want to maybe see it lol. About Pixar I saw the good dinosor the another day and was disappointed felt the movie was kind of boring the first has even more so.

Kung Fu Panda 3 is one of the early contenders to dethrone Furious 7 as the top Hollywood movie in China. Even take the crown altogether from the number one local movie.

Other than the obvious reasons, it's smartly marketing itself as a Lunar New Year movie. Wonder if this is from Jackie Chan's input who, back in the day, released his big Chinese movies then, a primetime slot for Chinese/East Asian audiences.

Franchise whisperer.
:lmao:

I didn't realize until years later, that the young girl I had a crush on in the Horse Whisper was Scarlett. :O

Which means I accidentally fell in love with her three times. :funny:

I would dispute the first one. It was Brad Bird that saved it.
Ghost Protocol or Rogue Nation is my favorite, but without M:I3 I don't think either of those ones exist. He brought the series into the 21st century, kicking and screaming.

TFA is Bruce Lee and JW is Chuck Norris and James Cameron...

...he's Kareem Abdul Jabbar in the Game of Death.

I have seen mission impossible 3-5 never saw 1 or 2 but I find 3 ok 4 boring and very overrated and 5 pretty good.

Is new year's eve being rolled over into the weekend estimates? as friday is a holiday.

I'm actually finally seeing it tomorrow.

No, Thursday sneaks are only for opening weekend. The Friday numbers will be the Friday numbers.

His Trek movies were well reviewed and made money. Star Trek was deader than dead before the 2009 film became a well reviewed well liked hit.

Trek hardcore fans are allowed their opinions like everyone else but they can't twist reality.

He didn't fix Trek. I'm a Trek fan and his movies are nothing like Trek at all. Tino.
Considering the state Trek as a whole was in before JJ came around, he fixed it. And for my money, he easily made the two best films in the franchise.

We are talking to the person who thought TASM2 didn't sink that franchise. :hehe:

My 32 year old sister doesn't care for Abrams version of Trek either and she acts like nobody else does just because she doesn't.

Hardcore Trek fans, whom don't like the new version of Trek, quite frankly live in a land of make believe. They ignore that Star Trek was in a coffin with maggots crawling out of it's eyes before Abrams film brought the franchise back to life.

Oh I remember our discussions on the Spidey boards.

Like I'm just the type of person who doesn't like to ignore reality...well mostly I try to be that person. I dislike certain popular things but I don't act like they aren't popular just because I don't like them. I like films with mixed receptions but I don't try to pretend that those films didn't have that reception. Obviously TASM 2 regardless of one's opinions of it did kill TASM franchise. Obviously WB was disappointed with Man of Steel's box office and reception I believe. I'm not going to pretend differently just to make myself or anyone else feel better.

To bring it back to Trek, love or hate the direction the box office, reviews and two sequels existing speak for themselves.
