It's a good thing it will make a lot of money. According to 60 minutes, the film needs $1.5 billion to break even ;) .

I don't think that is what they said. What they said it is that it is expected to make at least that, or be considered a failure.

I've already accepted the fact that this film will swim past the $2 billion mark.

Advance sales are crazy.

I'm in the lobby waiting to get into the theatre. The buzz going around is unlike anything I've ever seen! This will be huge!

Enjoy mate! Look forward to your opinion on it.

So movietickets.com is saying the presales have reached around $120 miliion, this was as of this past weekend...with the skyrocket positive reviews, expect another 90-110 million by Sunday...

Seems like it was on course to absolutely destroy even before these crazy reviews. No idea what happens now!

Presales are added into a total until opening day.

So the presale peak will be tomorrow right before 7 pm.

It might be up to 150 m by then.

The last record was 45 m from Deathly Hallows 2.

This has a very real chance at breaking Avatar's domestic record.

If it blows up worldwide then the WW record will also be in trouble which is insane.

It seems most commentator expectations have shifted to this ending in Avatar territory domestically even if it doesn't beat and the reviews now turning out so well will likely have adjusted many of those expectations to be in with a decent shot at a beat. Overseas is a bit harder to judge especially in those countries that don't have the same history with Star Wars but it could explode with the global hype. As you say it's insane that Avatar's WW record with that big 3D era boost is even being mentioned which shows just how big this is.

Movietickets.com is saying $120 million for pre-sale tickets.
I think the crazy predictions were low. This could theoretically do a billion domestically if it wants to, for christ's sakes. It's up to the gods now.

I'm going to say:
$260 million Opening Weekend
$800 million Domestic
$3 billion Worldwide
Biggest movie ever in all categories

^ Sounds absolutely ludicrous and impossible, but screw it. I'm all in.

But we don't know if that $120 Million is all for this opening weekend, right? How much are we looking at for this opening weekend domestically?

Why would people buy pre-sale tickets for 2 weeks from now?

Because of how busy it will be, there are tons of people who buy tickets for a later date to avoid all the chaos. Whether that be for Monday or Wedbesday or any other day outside of the opening weekend.

The presales aren't all for the weekend. That was stated on some of the sources giving the numbers. A big chunk of it is for the weekend though.

(it's still crazy, don't worry ;))

You ask that, but the Hollywood Reporter said that's exactly what is happening. Only around 50-60% of the presales are for opening weekend. A lot of people are busy this weekend shopping and traveling for Christmas next week. Next weekend is going to be an enormous second weekend.

Nothing would surprise me. TFA is venturing into unknown box office territory. Time to just sit back and enjoy the ride.

So it's pretty much guaranteed that no film is ever touching the December box office in a LONG time.

I'm sure some of the presales won't be for this weekend, but it will be a very small percentage.

For instance, I bought 10 tickets to see it in 70mm at Air and Space Museum on the 26th.

My prediction:

$900 million domestic
$1.9 billion foreign

Will come within $100 million of Avatar, and take over number #1 money making movie of all time.

I'd like to see what kind of predictions I was making 3 years ago for this. I would hope $300m domestic is as low as I could have possibly gone (please be more :O). It's gonna make that in a few days haha.

Is this beating JW for opening weekend in North America?
