Ant-Man Edgar Wright Leaves Ant-Man!! - Part 1

I didnt know who The Russos were until Cap 2 and they made one of the best MCU films thus far. So whatever Marvel thinks is best is cool by me.

^exactly

If the guys who made 'You Me and Dupree' could do what they did, I'm sure the directors of Dodgeball, The Other Guys, or Zombieland can do well too.

All it takes is a bit of passion for the character

..... and You Me and Dupree was absolute garbage! LOL

You, Me and Dupree was an awful movie. Kate Hudson was in it. She's only made one good movie.

I was mortified when Marvel announced the Russos because of that film. Goes to show you what that amounted to. Haha

I wasn't too worried about Russos (more confused), but then I watched Community which gave me more confidence because I saw they were genre savvy enough to handle a Marvel movie.

With the casting choices, I dig them. Fleischer may be struggling now, but a Marvel movie may exactly be what he needs. McKay has shown he can do well with action and comedy with the Other Guys.

I'm always more concerned with how these directors will handle the action, especially with something as unique as Ant Man. That's why Wright's test reel had me so excited.

It certainly wasn't a popular decision. There were a lot of people that thought Johnston did a good job and should have been brought back.

Sometimes these things work out, and sometimes they don't. While I appreciate the updated look Alan Taylor brought to TDW, I think Branagh did a better job directing Thor 1. But had Johnston came back, I don't know what kind of WS movie we would have gotten, but I don't think it would have been nearly as good.

Absolutely. I think Johnston works best in the nostalgic period piece type settings.

Basically if you're insanely pissed about Wright's departure even if someone else decent gets the gig you won't see past it.

I cant be angry because I never saw what Wright was gonna do with it. One test reel clip is fine but thats not enough for me to know for sure what the film is like. Im not a big enough fan of him to think he created the best version of Ant Man ever. Apparently Marvel wasnt happy with it. He had years to turn in a draft that was meant to fit with the MCU and he didnt do it so they had to go do it for him. Its really lame to see the screenplay still has his name on it but hes not even directing after all this time. I hope whoever makes this movie does a great job and helps us forget this whole situation.

Yeah, I never honestly thought Johnston was going to end up directing a modern day Cap movie anyway. I figured he was only brought in because it was based in World War II.

It's hard to imagine any of these choices doing a better job that Wright. Marvel ftl

Is it going to still have his name on it in the end, or will it be so different as to not be appropriate for him to be credited?

In other Marvel news:

According to Latino Review, Thanos has been cast.

The biggest thing about Wright I think I'll miss on this is the fight choreographer he's been using since Scott Pilgrim, who was one of Jackie Chan's choreographers back in the day. That's why you could actually believe that Michael Cera and Nick Frost could realistically kick ass. It's doubtful, but I hope they can get him to stick around to help out whoever ends up directing. Just imagine McKay's comedy chops with The World's End level fight scenes!

We have our THANOS (awesome choice btw). Now we just need our Ant Man director.

I think I'll be able to see past it. Am I disappointed Edgar Wright isn't doing the movie? Sure. But as big a fan of Edgar Wright as I am, and as much as whatever he goes on to make next now is guaranteed to get a watch from me, I'm also a big fan of Marvel Studios. I am rooting for them to find another good director who will still manage to rein together a quality film.

My internet has been down for the last two weeks, so weighing in with my feelings:

This f***ing sucks.

I'm a big MCU fan, I'm also a big Edgar Wright fan. The idea of them both smashing together was

So yeah, this f***ing sucks.

All Wright could have had in the script was "Henry Pym was once a colleague of Howard Stark" and boom, there's the connection to the MCU. I guess Marvel wanted more that that.

That's the thing though. Last summer both Wright & Feige separately said that the changes to the script to make it fit the MCU were minimal and both seemed quite happy with that. What the f*** changed?

But when you have to choose, building the universe vs having a better film, what do you choose? Do you include fifteen minutes of story that supports Phase 3 and take out fifteen minutes of story that makes the movie better, or do you leave them film intact?

Do you remember how they were saying that in Phase 1 they wanted to make it really clear that this was one universe, and with the success of the Avengers the Phase 2 films would be more stand alone?

Wright really shouldve just adjusted his vision or script to fit in with Marvel like all the other filmmakers have. Him walking was really stupid on his part. And if it was a thing about him just not being right for the film, thats the way it is.

I cant be angry because I never saw what Wright was gonna do with it. One test reel clip is fine but thats not enough for me to know for sure what the film is like. I have absolutely no idea where you are getting that idea, as I pointed out above, he already had adapted his script to the MCU.

Wright was the one who left. it almost seems like they did it on purpose in a roundabout way to get him to quit. You dont have a writer do rewrites to his script then have others without his knowledge edit it again unless youre just not gonna work with the person.

They have the final word on what they make. Hes an employee, not a producer. I think they wanted to work with Wright but when he showed them how he was ultimately going to make the movie, it all went bad. Just because he made some fun quirky comedies with Simon and Nick doesnt mean it would be right for Ant Man. This was going to be a huge franchise movie, not one of his trademark pub comedies. Lets not forget, Marvel saw/knew what he was going to do for years (whereas we havent), hence the troubles.

I dont care what Badass Digest thinks or any other site. Its not up to them or Edgar Wrights fans. Hopefully this will be a learning experience for all involved. Marvel will make better decisions on who they hire and Wright will only make the kinds of films he knows he has control over from inception to post production.

If Marvel Studios urinates all over his script and makes it boring and uninteresting, Edgar Wright has the right to walk. He is an employee, not a slave.

I'd like to see McKay get it, myself.
