Sci-Fi Edge of Tomorrow - Part 1

Cruise proposed an idea for a sequel, I can't imagine it being a prequel with Rita having the ability to reset the day.

Maybe it's a less expensive idea than the first movie.

Edge of Tomorrow 2, meanwhile, is being written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse and overseen by the first film’s scribe Christopher McQuarrie, who confirmed Liman will return as director. He was asked for an update on the sequel and was both coy and grandiose.

“It’s going to revolutionize how people make sequels. It really will.”

When asked to elaborate, he said:

“I can’t, but it will. You mark my words.”

So movie around Angel of Verdun? No Cruise? Or Cruise in different role.

Maybe a soft reboot like Pacific Rim 2 and GI JOE 2. They will cut cost with no Cruise in this.

I think it means it will be non linear and maybe some device also comes into play that brings time travel into the fold that will make things really get trippy. I see it clearly in my mind, but I have absolutely no idea on how to sum it up in a post succinctly. I guess using an example... A non linear and linear Back to the Future II.

Well, Cruise has a potentially interesting idea, so hey.

Doug Liman says that it is both a sequel and a prequel. Plus Cruise came up with the story, so Cage would have a key role in the follow-up.

I like that the idea they have is half-prequel, so we get some Angel of Verdun ass-kickery. The prequel aspect also leaves room for other characters, like J-Squad, to return.

so....... WB are really going through with this? did the first even break even?

Unsure about box office but don't forget home video as well as popularity on TV. There are many things that element in.

If we're applying the 2.5x method, it fell $75 million short of breaking even. (That's if the official budget was indeed $178 million.) DVD/Blu-ray numbers cut down the deficit by $25M.

However, Cruise is a savvy guy. If he thinks there's room for a sequel to be a true breakout hit, then he's usually right. He continued on with the Mission Impossible series even though the third one underperformed.

I think people underestimate how much of a businessman Cruise really is under all that stuff.

......the problem is the price tag, the first cost nearly 200 million without the 100+million marketing budget included, are WB really going to shelve out that amount of money again based on cruises hunch? The movie was very good but cruise isn't a major draw in the states anymore. Honestly this sounds very risky but hey if the movie is made and it's as good as the first one then that's all that really matters...... to the fans.

Pretty much sums it up.

The first movie is one of the best and most entertaining movies of 2014. Hope they can recapture the charm and quality instead of making it like the sequels to Pirates of the Carribean, Jack Reacher, and Taken.

WB partnered with Village Roadshow and RatPac-Dune Entertainment on Edge of Tomorrow, they weren't shouldering the whole budget like their HP films. If the sequel gets greenlit, WB will partner up again and keep a tighter leash on the budget.

When I think of truly revolutionary sequel narratives, I think of Bourne Ultimatum. IMHO, that's the most clever thing done with a sequel narrative in the past 10 years.

Agreed, Loved the first one. It was a lotta fun. :D:D

Let's hope Liman and Cruise can deliver a great sequel. :)

I enjoyed the first one a lot. Once he kinda got to the end of the loop i felt it kinda became a bit more "standard action flick" but the looping and watching him learn was really interesting and fun.

Maybe it won't be a sequel in the sense of a traditional sequel where the story takes place after the original.

Maybe it will be like the first one never happened and they're still in a/the loop but they find out that they're in an even bigger loop (so the first one was a loop within a loop). This way they can revisit events of the first film from a different perspective (sequel) but can focus more on the events that lead up to it (prequel) also...

ahh that makes alot more sense. well good luck to liman and cruise. I'll be catching this in the theatre if it gets off the ground. Blunt needs to return as well.

I voted 8. The wrapup was way too easy and confusing at the same time imo.
