The Penguin Episode 8: A Great or Little Thing (Spoiler Thread)

I also think its because like, yeah, she looks unhappy and I don't need histrionics or anything but you don't really get much of a sense of "Oh, wow, Oz really engineered the worst possible thing that he could do to her". It's there as in it literally happens but I don't think they did a very good job of making it impactful.
Which is interesting. Because conceptually her having a comfortable life in Arkham should've gone out the window the moment she gave up her empire. But she honestly felt like she was already living the Goodfellas prison life. Her beefcake and all.

The bat signal while a bit perfunctory (in a fun way, no issue with it) actually does have some effective narrative implications: everything Oz did was for nothing. Inevitably, Batman will destroy what he built. He's just made a sandcastle.
Yep. He's on the top of the world and Bats is about snow on his parade.

But you guys forget the main question.

Between Milioti and O'Connell, who wins the Emmy?

One great call/insight, reading around

Reddit comment (Medium_Trip_4227) in r/ThePenguin:

"I don’t know if it was foreshadowing or not but the first time we meet Oz’s mom might’ve been the clue all along

He asks her why her pills are in the tub and she responds “the boys were in the tub they didn’t want to get out”. Here comes the absolute brilliance of the show. The look Oz gives his mother when she says that is scared/confused and bewildered. We as the audience think Oz is reacting to his mom mind slipping into dementia but Oz really makes that face because he fears she’s connecting the dots to him murdering his brothers (locking them inside and letting them drown in the water). I could be wrong but it seems too close to be anything other than that. It just shows the absolute mastery of this writing."

Holy… truly magnificent and never let up on telling a VILLAIN’S story.

We don’t deserve Matt Reeves.

Pour one out for the ultimate hype-man, Vic.

THAT LETTER from Selina, oh my.

GOODWIN INTERNATIONAL

…just beautiful, sad, tragic, and amazing.

OH.

Mayor Cobb and Selina/Sofia team-up were my big takeaways as far as Part II and beyond are concerned.
Putting Oz’s next steps into integrating into the politics of Gotham is genius, homage while sadly more true now than in 1992 or in 1966.

I have to say I love that Oz is a big fat hypocrite who only cares about power.

All the "man of the people" talk, and he murdered his only friend in coldbood in the exact same way Falcone did with his victims.
Cough 2016 / 2024 cough

Do not understand how any reviewers can see this show as mediocre.

God, it simultaneously makes me need to rewatch the whole show, but also has my unreasonably hyped for Batman 2. Hell, give me all the Reevesverse spinoffs.

I am happy that Sofia survived. I expected Vic to bite it, but not in that way. I was expecting a betrayal in some way to be involved, some way in a more active scene. Not like this. Not just cold. Just because he sees the connection as a weakness. Not going to lie, that scene was just so tense, with so little musical cues to help build the tension, or even direct dialogue for the tension.

Based on the council scene, I suspect we are going to get Oz running for Mayor either in Batman 3 or in season 2.

Big props for the costuming department, for packing so many great looks for Sofia in one episode.

What a ride. Sign me up for so much more.

Incredible season finale and an incredible season overall, Lauren LeFranc did such an amazing job creating a show that never forgets what you're watching, a show about the rise of a villain. I hope she sticks around for more stuff in The Batman universe.

I predicted that Sophia would go back to Arkham a couple of episodes ago as a fate worse than death and I'm glad they made that choice. I love that touch of Selina reaching out to her, it's honestly a perfect setup for a Catwoman limited series or in a sequel if they wanted to go there.

They did such a smart reveal showing how rotted Oz has been to the core ever since he was a kid and all of those scenes with his ma were so excellent. Francis also getting a fate worse than death is also such a brutal way to go. And love that touch and how disturbing it is to get Eve Karlo dressed up as his mom and it's also fitting considering the whole "Karlo" name.

I love that little montage of all the second-hand men/women taking their own gang leaders out and aligning with Oz. And I love that tease of Oz looking to be Mayor.

My boy Vic... they really got me, I was really hoping they would let him live, but man that's such a Godfather-esque way to go, especially how it was shot and written. You know the writers did their job when Oz is truly an unredeemable piece of sh** by the end of the show.

Also I will say I thought the needle drop of the "Girl Boss" scene when Sophia destroyed her dad's place was probably too on the nose but I loved it. lol

Such a great finale and show. Yesterday I posted that I didn’t think Oz would kill Vic and boy was I wrong, lol. I guess I was just hoping the kid would survive, so much so that I watched all the way until the end to see if we would get a scene of Vic waking up on the shore, realizing he’d only just passed out, and then getting ready to take revenge on Oz. But alas. Nope. And that’s probably a good thing, lol.

That beginning sequence of Oz’s mother telling his idol that her son is a monster. Just an epic moment in one of the best comic book series I have ever seen.

Penguin finally becoming the full fledged Gotham villain at the very end leading into Batman 2.

My only issue with finale was it just seemed to convenient that Oz escaped Sofia’s clutches but other then that it did it’s job. Got us ready for and excited for Batman 2.

Who yelled out in excitement when we discovered that Sofia was going to live and Selina reached out to her. I thought the letter was from Barry until she read it. I think we might get that Arkham series with Sofia, Riddler, and you know who in 2028.

Rest in peace Vick. What a story ark. That Penguin, killed his brothers and now his son.

Colin has a chance to do with Penguin what Heath did with the Joker in Batman 2. Can’t wait.

IGN???? :woozy: :gross:
