Ethnicity question

In America we ask about racial background because, we want to try to ensure that there is some type of equality to access of resources. The side affect is that we appear more grouped. Currently we are so consumed with equality that we have a program of Affirmative Action. This requires that we track who ( racially ) is getting what.

But we all know this. What we dont know is the original question.
If you are black and your family is from the West Indies, are you African-American? My sister in law who is a hr manager for a huge phone company says most dark skinned people who do not see themselves as African, respond other.

in england, we term bl;ack people as afro carribean, because alot of balck people come from the carribean and have african heritage over here.

people from india, pakistan, bangladesh are called asians

oriental people are are called chinese, japanese, vietnamese etc depending on where they are from

white people are called white people

asylum seekers are called asylum seekers and bunched in one, whether you are from somalia or afghanistan or wherever

Is it inappropriate to fill in more than one bubble for ethnicity on a questionnaire?:o:confused:

i call myself black or american.i don't even know what africa smells like so why would i call myself that.people who are from cuba who look exactly like me wouldn't call themselves africans but cubans because thats where they were born.
oh yeah,is it true that africans hate to hear blacks in america be called african american?

they really need to come up with a better term than black. How many black people are actually the color black?:o

I don't know, I've never seen one. When I look at my skin color, it looks brown.

Just a question for the hype, it may have been asked before but I don't remember and wasn't really sure what to search for.

African American is a term used to describe black (or darker skinned) people in the US. Obviously they were born in America but they still want to keep their heritage to Africa as well. What do black people in other countries call their ethnicity? Like people who are black and born and raised in England or somewhere like that? Just curious.

In Guyana, its either black, afro-guyanese or juss plain guyanese.

Chaseter - you may want to check again, because it does exist
Caucasia exists...where then? What country is Caucasia near and where is it at? Who governs Caucasia...what are they official exports and imports.

Probably the same amount of people that are totally white...that is they lack all color and have no pigment.

That is very silly and sexist of you C. Lee. I'm surprised of all people!! We don't need to be naked to tell sex. You can just look at a man's face and tell that's he's a man. You also just have to look at a girl's boobs and you can tell she's a woman.

You apparently haven't been to Los Angeles.....

True, True.

What's ironic is that i've seen more 'Black' people (Albino blacks with no pigment whatso ever) that are actually whiter than the whitest white person....

There are few enough black people in England that most white people can just try to ignore them:)

ok, where i come from (sweden) we call black people swedish if they are born and raised in sweden or have a citizenship. many of the ethnicity questions that go on in america are very unique to this country actually... but yea, if you are born and raised in sweden you are swedish no matter the colour of your skin - in fact, ethnicity NEVER appears on swedish applications.

Same here in Canada. It seems to be a U.S. thing primarily...BUT if I'm not mistaken on a police application and for some government jobs there is "colour guide" for minority hiring etc; That's *****....but I know they've done it in the past.

99% of jobs do not and cannot have a "colour guide" as that's pre-screening...pre-judging.

Black people lost to us, fair and square. They should be called whatever we want to call them.
