So.... he's against the film now?

I don't know if he ever stated if he was for or against it.

All I remember is that he tweeted out "Karma" when the Trank rumors were published by THR

I must be thinking of someone else then.

Seems like it, here's the whole dialogue
Further conspiracy theory: this happens all the time and is why we have things like an Elektra director's cut.
Landis: Definitely not a real thing. 300% not a real thing.
It's hard to know where to draw the paranoia line sometimes with Hollywood finance types.
Landis: The general rule seems to be, "If something seems like a massive **** up due to incompetence on multiple fronts, it is."

From Drew McWeeny:

Josh Trank may have fired off his disgruntled Tweet late Thursday night, but there are things about what he said that don't sit right with me. Trank had the studio's support on this film far longer than would seem justified because Fox was so very aware of how it would look if they pushed the young filmmaker off of his movie. They made him work for the greenlight before they decided to go ahead with the movie, and whatever Trank wants to say about how he was handled, he was the one who directed the film. The studio wasn't making daily changes or forcing him to shoot material he didn't help create. They were doing everything they could to keep him on schedule and on budget, and they surrounded him with crew that they trusted. They wanted this film to work. Even when things weren't working, the studio still worked to find a way to have Trank solve those problems. He may claim that his cut a year ago was amazing, but that opinion was not shared by the majority of the people working on the film. There were internal conversations at that point about potentially scrapping everything. That's how strong the concerns were. Even so, they decided to back Trank while looking for ways to fix the movie, and the end result is the film audiences largely didn't bother to see in theaters this weekend.

Everything I've heard would indicate that the studio will move forward with a "Fantastic Four" sequel. It may not make that original 2017 date, but they're definitely planning to make it. The next filmmaker in is going to start from a difficult position, and they're going to have to work hard to create their own movie while starting with some of Trank's choices intact. For better or worse, Trank was given room to define these characters, and his signature will remain on the next film no matter who writes and directs it. The next movie will be a reaction to this one. What remains to be seen is whether or not this incident overall will test Fox's resolve to try to support their filmmakers. It would be understandable if they suddenly reverted to the way things used to be, when you did what Fox said or they would just steamroll you.

What?!

Eh.

I'll believe it when I see it. They're saving face. Everyone always says theyre making a sequel until they aren't

They can't seriously think anyone wants a sequel to this awful, failed abomination

There have been other films which have done much better than this and haven't been given a sequel. Even Catwoman did better than this, and didn't get one. And Ant-Man has done miles better and even that isn't guaranteed a sequel at all.

Why would they want to make a sequel to a film everyone universally hated? And why would they even want to retain Trank's stamp on it?

Umm Rise of the Silver surfer did freaking better than this! It made over a $130 million domestic and $289 million worldwide. No sequel. No Silver Surfer spin-off either.

It also didn't get 9% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Remember Green Lantern 2? Pretty sure this will go the same way.

Also, look at Spider-Man and TASM3/Sinister Six movies. They were going forward until enough fan backlash happened that they decided to scrap them.

There's not enough fan backlash for FFINO. :o

Fanboys only make up a small percentage of the audience and have no power to influence anything about a movie which the general audience will see regardless. :o

That is, until the movie bombs. Then it's all on the fans. :o

This movie won't even make its budget back. A sequel is not happening. I think, at most, this'll crawl to $100 mill ww.

Hypothetically, if you were Fox and you were in active negotiations with Marvel, would you leak to your reporter contacts:

a. "Good lord that was a disaster. We just want to dump this property and move on."

OR

b. "We are still very focused and determined to make a sequel."

Fox is dumb, but even I don't believe they're seriously dumb enough to be planning a sequel after this absolute mess.

I can sympathize and respect Fox for trying to reign Trank in and having to fix his **** and wanting the film to work, but woulda shoulda DIDN'T. The film was and is still a failure on a critical and commercial level. From a pure business viewpoint, a sequel doesn't make sense.

And there's our answer. Trank's cut screened absolutely horribly as any kind of movie, let alone a superhero movie. Hence the extensive, panic mode reshoots. Too bad they didn't scrap the project altogether.

But they must be dumb enough, since they were dumb enough to release FFINO.

Imagine the conversation they had:

Fox executive 1: "Goodness! This movie absolutely sucks! It's terrible"

Fox executive 2: "Let's just release it anyway."

Don't forget that leading up to this film, we read many times from many different bloggers: "My sources are telling me they have complete faith in this film and it will surprise a lot of people."

Fox isn't above putting misinformation out there if they feel it suits their purposes. In fact, you can generally assume that whatever Fox is putting out there is the opposite of the truth and you'll be right more often than not.

I wonder though how it screened so horribly as any kind of movie when Chronicle was well received, and Trank was essentially just remaking his first film but calling it FFINO.

The problem is that Fox should have never greenlit Trank's FF movie. Nobody wants to see the Cronenberg Four. I love eighties Cronenberg but no, that's not the right angle for this property.
