Fant4stic Fantastic Four Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 5

The thing is that I was not a fan of Potter, Hunger Games, 50 Shades, Twilight, Divergent or a dozen other properties before they were adapted for the movies.
If I had visited web sites for those franchises as those movies were being made and the fans were upset and griping about all the changes and fearing it would flop and saying those making it had no respect etc.----
I may have felt they were silly, too involved, overreacting, or maybe just wrong, BUT I would not have engaged loyal fans in a many months long debate about a property I really didn't know or care about.
Because I'm not a contrarian jerk who likes to argue just for the sake of arguing.
Repeating "All I care about is if it turns out good."& " let's wait and see."---endlessly.
Really? That's all you care about? Then shut your trap wait till it opens and if it's a hit come back and say, "I told you it would turn out ok."
No, for sport you wanted to bait and antagonize loyal fans for whom this meant a lot---especially because if they got this wrong it might be many years till we got another chance.
And if Fox was monitoring these types of boards they could say, " a decent number of fans support our vision."
Wrong, they weren't fans, they just wanted to play devils advocate for a year about a subject they didn't know about or care about.

Yep! It was just rinse and repeat cluelessness and denial every time some new damaging infor came out about this reboot.

A common feature about the defenders of FFINO was that practically all of them said that they were not really a fan of Fantastic Four and had no interest in the property before Trank got his hands on it, and only now it looks interesting. Every time that was the common element.

Well by the looks of it, those must types of folks have been by and large the only people to go out and see this movie.

Base the movie on the book generations of fans knew and loved OR base it on the vision of a rookie director with one "found footage" movie under his belt, that was a minor hit. (Who was clearly more interested in making a bigger budget remake of his earlier movie)
To anyone with half a brain it's an easy choice, but for a Fox exec......

Next up on the docket will undoubtedly be a Silver Surfer film unless they work out a deal with Disney. That's the only way to make a transition from this atrocity and retain the rights for another seven years.

No, it doesn't quite work that way. Besides, I'm sure that FOX is scared chicken s***less now regarding touching anything CBM-related right now. They are having an abysmal year in terms of sales on their properties and critics are chewing up pretty much everything they're putting out.

They truly suck right now. Not just at making CBMs...but at making films in general. They need to just have a seat and regroup.

Well by the looks of it, those must types of folks have been by and large the only people to go out and see this movie.

Some said they would go and see it several times, and a few did.

One poster (three guesses who!) saw it four times. After the first time it was the finest masterpiece in cinemas this year. After the third time they finally acknowledged it wasn't very good. Apparently the fourth time happened when they realized the devil tricked them after the third time. It's still an underappreciated film after all, you see.

I'm not sure that's true. None of us really knew how the movie would turn out before it was released.

I'm pretty familiar with the comic books and I thought the Domashev name change (which was fixed anyway) and the black Torch were not sufficient reasons to think this film would be a disaster. The main arguments against this movie on forums and social media were based on the casting of Johnny Storm.

But that was the least of the film's problems. The movie has far, far bigger faults than that. If everything else was right, then a black Torch would be perfectly okay.

And it turns out the original script was far better. Still not perfect, but a damn sight better than what we got.

Trank was always an odd choice, because of his indie background and inexperience with the Hollywood movie machine, but that original script was galaxies better than what ended up on the screen.

The first time I was really sick on hearing news of this movie was when a lady exec at Fox was asked,---"Chronicle was a found footage movie--will Tranks FF movie be the same?"
And she gushed, "It's Josh Trank, how could it not be, It's his style!"
I was sick.
She was clueless on so many levels.....
1. Even after her idiotic statement I was 95% sure it wouldn't be found footage---so why answer it like that?
2. Even by then, 2013, people were cooling on found footage---so why even let the idea of your movie being part of a dying trend stay alive?
3. "It's Josh Trank....!!!"----ugh, c'mon lady, he made one movie where he collaborated with others. It had a tiny budget and was a surprise hit--- he ain't freakin Spielberg, Cameon or Nolan!
Why are you throwing his g-damn name around like he's a freakin star?
Few days later comes the correction, but it wss the beginng of a trend of them never blowing an opportunity to blow an opportunity.

"Hey Michael, some fans are complaing about Johnny being black"
Hey MBJ, instead of " They'll see it anyway!"--with a smug smile,
how about, "I know the vast majoriy of fans don't worry about race and we are going to try to make the fans proud."
Never once did they say anything that made the fans feel comforted or that their opinions mattered.
They spent $122+ million dollars on a movie and turned what could have been their best ambassadors of the project from wary, to annoyed, to bitterly angry.
It would be hard to accomplish that if they tried-- but they managed to do it.

Sorry dude, the main complaint on these forums was NO WAY torches race.
That was brought up by a few immature people and an even fewer actual racists just to stir things up.
Spoken of 30 times more often was the needless turning of ONE sibling into another race. Have the freakin courage of your convictions and turn both black or pick one of the other two non related characters to be black.
Because then you end up with pointless nonsense like Sue is a Kosovo refugee and Franklin Storm is adopting every one in sight---even Domashev.
Origin movies especially REBOOT origin movies need to be streamlined not complicated with exposition that goes nowhere.

Are you from another dimension where there is no such thing as previous marriages and adoption? LOL...

Yes, I hated the 'Kosovo refugee' thing as an explanation, but there is no problem with families containing more than one race.

Another obtuse person to ignore.
Gee no I've never heard of adoption---what is that?
Every plot point in a movie should serve a purpose. Changing one siblings race served the purpose of Trank being able to hire his buddy--it added nothing to the movie, nor did Storm being a "foster dad" to Domashev.
They did that so they could cheap out on Domashevs origin by making Storm a collector of broken, lost children which was never part of F. Storms character.

No they weren't. You clearly weren't paying attention.

No, they weren't. Massive reshoots, a critic embargo practically up to release, a lack of promotion, and Trank getting FIRED from his next project because of his poor performance with this one were definitely sufficient reasons to think this film would be a disaster though.

Don't you know, folks? This movie had bad buzz because of the racists! It had nothing to do with the majority of the materials available in the media prior to release looking awful. It had nothing to do with the now confirmed tales of major production problems! Nope, not at all!

Even at this late date someone trying to make totally dishonest and inaccurate statement about what bothered people about this production.
Every time in the last many, many months some block-head brought up race they were drowned out by folks who didn't give a damn about that subject. We had real issues with a dozen aspects of this movie.

I don't know or really care about why this or that person thought the movie would be bad and I'm not interested in pissing anyone off. I didn't initially like the idea of an African American Johnny Storm, but that ain't why I didn't go see it. In fact, I planned to see it first day until the very last week. What probably convinced me NOT to see it was the fact that there weren't any early previews and, after the reviews hit, I didn't feel like it would be any fun to see.

I remember when, on this thread, people were saying "don't do it", "don't go opening weekend at least", etc. That didn't convince me.

Did I think the HT casting was a mistake? Yes. Did it kill the movie for me? No. If they had cast Ben as Black Panther instead of Dr. Strange, I would have been totally pissed to see one of my fav characters from WAY back cast as a white Wakandan dude.

The problem, as I see it, is that way back in the 60s, we didn't have really good female or characters of color. Those were the times and, thankfully, those times have changed (at least somewhat). Potentially, we've got some really cool characters coming up (Captain Marvel and Black Panther in particular). The more the merrier.

Some said they would go and see it several times, and a few did.

For all the good it did. Guess THEY were the vocal minority after all.

Are you serious? That's bonkers.

Welp. I'll say it then: I had a major problem with them recasting Johnny as a black character. Like...major. :down

Call me racist all you want (I'm a man of color, but whatevs) but Trank only did that to appease an actor--it wasn't done for creative license. From what I've heard, it was a stupid move that did absolutely NOTHING to advance the storyline or enhance Johnny or Susan's character development.

What about the numerous rumors of behind the scenes issues? That raised a red flag to a lot of people, save for the ones adamantly arguing that said problems were all fabricated. Funny how most of those people have disappeared from this section.

The main arguments against this movie on forums and social media were based on the casting of Johnny Storm.

This is absolute hog-wash. If you honestly believe this, then you have not been paying attention, but I don't think you honestly believe this.
The majority of the arguments against this movie all stem from the fact that this was a cheap, half-baked rights grab from the beginning.

Welp. I already said the same thing on a couple of occasions. :cwink: I think only idiots pigeon hole people as racists based on something like this. It wasn't a deal breaker for me, but I didn't get casting HT as an African American dude.

I didn't have a problem with Kingpin being played by Michael, but he wasn't as iconic a character to me and I didn't really look into the first Daredevil to the extent that I did this movie.

In any case, we've got some good Marvel movies coming up and I'm guessing we'll be enjoying them.

X-Maniac may not be the biggest sufferer of The Complex on SHH, but that statement if false.

As one of the few people on this board to hear a crewmember back in June '14., this film was a disaster.

As you said, that was the least of the film's problems. There were many other faults far more major than that, and people on this forum complained about many more of these than simply the Torch being black. We've been over all of this hundreds of times before ad nauseum. At this point it would be easier to list anything (if there is anything) that the movie or the whole production process got right than what it got wrong, because it would be a much shorter list. Everything about this movie through each step of the way has been a cause for concern which has been justified completely.

You'd think but if you go into the mind of a Fox executive, it's like a pot of gumbo. You have no idea what plain these guys think on and they may have Reed Richards be a manager at KFC and................I'm going to stop there because I don't want to give them any ideas in case they just happen to be here. :o

I can't believe people are still using the race card on this movie failing. MBJ was quite possibly the best casting of the movie and fit his role perfectly. But let's ignore the other 99 things wrong with the film.

Freakin racist! :argh: I actually had a problem with it at first but then I completely forgot about it after all the other things started to come out about this film. Then it seemed to be the least of my problems. This thing had so many things wrong with it that it was doomed to fail. That Mara interview in the beginning was the eye opener for me.

No, no, no, no, no! It's clear you haven't been paying any attention over the past year and a half. Most of us have been talking about the problems with this film based on real information that was indicating just how bad this film was.

Race became a bigger issue than it really was because people who wanted to distract from the real problems used that as a smoke screen and distraction and they baited people into arguments.

We saw that the characters were completely off for quite some time. We saw that the story was ridiculous and cliche' from the first leak that indicated the FF would be used as weapons for the government. We saw when they were talking about 'body horror' and this being a 'coming of age story' that there were serious problems and no real story. We saw that the tone and visual appearance of this film was NOTHING like FF from the start. We saw that Doom was terrible from the first leaked photographs. and descriptions of his character.

This was a terrible, terrible film from the start - including the awful first script. Fox never put any effort into it and that was clear. Fox never had any concept of who the FF were, and that was clear.

You can't just change the facts that everybody here has been talking about for the past year and a half and expect people who have actually been paying attention to think there's any truth in what you're claiming.
