Just got back from it, you don't need to type a lot to review this film, it's a very simple story that interlinks 4 big action sequences with some character moments and humour scattered here and there. It's ludicrous and corny and I loved every minute of it!
Say what you will but to me this series wears it's heart on it's sleeve and is proud to be what it is, and I dig that.
Of the 4 big sequences I thought the first one where they rescued Ramsey from the armored convoy was the best, just some incredible stunt work and the energy got the adrenaline racing!
Shaw was kinda like a T-1000, he just popped in from time to time to try and kill our group of loveable rogues, and he didn't really need to be more than this, although for a tactical special forces guy he was pretty blunt. Him, Hobbs and Dom were hilariously indestructible, over the course of this series Dom has become a cross between Del Boy Trotter and Superman filtered through Kojak.
I really liked Kurt Russell as Mr Nobody, he seemed to embrace the craziness and chewed up his dialogue, I was glad he didn't turn into the usual double crossing spook.
The big finale with cars, a chopper, a drone and fights was spectacular, although I thought Dom vs Shaw wasn't as strong as Bryan vs Tony Jaa. Using the big wrenches and the length it lasted as well as the crumbling building stomp to end was a bit meh IMO. As for Dom killing the chopper, that was similar to a couple of other movies but good enoiugh.
The real finale of the movie was heartbreaking though, and beautifully done. You could tell the scenes filmed of the 4 talking and watching Bryan and Mia were done after Paul's death, you could see the emotion all over Michelle Rodriguez face.
The final scene with Dom and Bryan back where they started, with Vin's voice-over, really got to me and the montage brought back a lot of memories. It's amazing when you think where this series started and the crazy scale it's ended up at 15 years and 7 movies later, hell of a journey.
RIP Paul.
