What are some films that had amazing opening scenes, but the rest of the film didn't really live up to them?
Magnolia- I did like the movie but the opening suggested that there was going to be a huge connection between all of them but it never happened.
Assault on Precinct 13 (remake)- had a really cool, gritty opening but the rest of the film was only okay.
Lord of War- genius opening sequence but i hated the rest of the movie.

Not EXACTLY precisely what you asked for, but Die Another Day opens with a good pre-teaser sequence - exciting, gritty(ish), downbeat - but the rest of the film is so lame and cartoon-like it seems as if it's a completely different movie.

that the rest of the film wasnt up to
the rest was good but not the same standard as opening scene

Preach it.

Elektra, the first 5 minutes are great, sadly it goes down hill.

Ghost Ship.

(The ending is kinda cool too tho)

x2- I like the rest of the film however, none of the action scenes equals the coolness of Nightcrawler's assassination attempt on the president.

I don't know why, but I thought of "Superman Returns" when I saw this thread. I thought the opening scene of the destruction of Krypton and the nostalgic opening credits were the best part. For some reason, I enjoyed those first five minutes way more than the airplane sequence or the New Krypton scenes.

I always had a soft spot for the beginning of Predator 2. A sweeping shot of the jungle eventually turns into an overhead view of Los Angeles. It was a nice tease, however, the film could have used alot more of the jungle and alot less of Gary Busey.

Spider-Man 3. It seemed like it would be as good as SM2.

I feel the same way (but it may be different from your reason).
Right when I saw the Columbia Pictures lady, along with the familiar Spider-Man theme, then the Marvel logo, then the web, then seeing "Spider-Man 3" on the screen, I was amped. I loved Spider-Man 3's intro (visually) more than the first two, and I was hyped up for the movie to fulfill what I had anticipated.

...we know what happened after that.

:down :whatever:

The Grudge: Bill Pullman suddenly jumping off his balcony was so unexpected. It made you think the whole movie would be good. The intro credits were awesome. But then the story started, and well...not so good.

effects wise...yeah...nothing matched it for the rest of the movie...but I thought the entire raid on the mansion/berserker wolvie scenes were great, even better. The entire scene still gives me goosebumps whenever I watch it.

Fellowship of the Ring. It had the greatest prologue ever filmed, so it was impossible for the rest of the movie to be as good.

Magnolia- I did like the movie but the opening suggested that there was going to be a huge connection between all of them but it never happened.
So glad to see some one else who feels this way. I see film buffs everywhere praising the hell out of this movie but I was honestly disappointed. I thought the opening showing the two mini stories was the most brilliant and hilarious thing about the whole film.

House of Wax - Say what you will about the film, but it had an amazing opening scene. Gritty, frightening, disturbing....and then, well...we get what we get.:(

Dawn of the Dead '04 - Don't get me wrong, I love this movie. But, the opening credits with the news footage of the infection, and then, playing in the background, Johnny Cash's "When The Man Comes Around"....that's just perfect. And the movie can't live up to that.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - The opening sequence of a mysterious tank without explanation ripping apart a bank vault or where ever it was is exhilarating. The rest of the movie has moments that seemed cool but lacked proper execution.

Doom - Scientists running for their lives down dark shadowy corridors as one by one they are picked off by an unseen monster culminating with scientist getting her arm ripped off by a closing door while the last remaining scientist frantically calls for help even as the demon punches its way through the door. The rest of the movie has its moments especially the ending first person sequence, but the whole film is hampered by the stupid genetic virus storyline and poor science.

SWORDFISH

:cwink:

That was the one that sprang to mind when i saw the thread title,i enjoyed the rest of the movie but it could never live up to the opening scene of Travolta's speech and that amazing explosion

yea seriously.... except maybe at the end.......when they replayed it..lmao:woot:

American Outlaws- Ok, I know, not a widely liked film- but the opening action scenes is a fantastic. Colin Farrel on a horse charging an army with two guns and the reigns in his mouth? Awesome. Unfortunately, the film is just downhill from there, with each action scene getting progressively worse- and the somewhat effective humor of the first half dissappearing during the second.

DINOSAUR- This Disney movie features quite possibly the most amazing opening of a film, ever. The following of the egg throughout an entire dinosaur kingdom gave me chills. The trailer remains my favourite trailer of all time(which was just the opening). Originally, the film was imagined as having no dialogue- just a story of dinosaurs through images(much like the Age of Reptiles comic books). However somewhere along the way, some executives got in, had them talk, made a bunch of lemurs the main characters, and, well, the movie sucked. But the opening... heartstopping.

Tenecious D & The Pick of Destiny
- The entire opening sequence done entirely through song is great. Once the music stops and the characters start speaking, it totally loses everything. Would have been a far better film if they just sung the whole damn thing.
