Infinity War Fortunately, I Am Mighty - The Thor Thread! - Part 1

A little of off topic but I always thought that if Kenneth Branagh had been given a bigger budget, better screenwriters, and had ILM to take care of the visual effects then he could have a delivered an even stronger Thor movie since his direction of the characters from the first film were spot on imho.

I agree the budget and screenwriting was hurting the film.

Branagh got Thor and Loki right, which was the main thing. He also got Anthony Hopkins to not phone it in, which was a bonus.

Thor 1 is an odd movie. It has lots of glaring problems. Not a very good script. That's obvious even with *very* good actors and a good director working with it. Some of the humor is pretty forced and artificial. The aforementioned problem of many supporting characters that aren't memorable and don't contribute much. It also feels cheap, particularly the generic destructible town in the desert.

Yet the movie still basically works and is quite re-watchable.

I think that it's one of the examples that most clearly shows how important getting the lead characters right really is for these movies. Everything else can be overlooked and forgiven if people connect with the main characters.

Do we think that Taika Waititi will helm the next Thor? Really hoping so!

Not sure. I don't even really know if there will be another Thor film.

It would be cool but, as a fan of the character, I'm at peace with it one way or another because of Ragnarok and especially Infinity War. (I'm expecting Thor to have his moments in A4 also.)

If Thor 4 happens, then great. If it doesn't, he could also appear as a prominent character in other MCU movies. Marvel is apparently doing something with the Eternals, which is interesting, because I could see Thor being involved there. He would be the logical choice if the studio wanted an established character to appear in that movie.

I surely hope so. He was the one to revitalize the franchise and the character... Without Ragnarok and his input we wouldn't have had the Thor from IW. Taika was also on the set of IW to give the Russos his own impression of the character and there where scenes and script changes in IW because of Taika's work with Thor.

The Russos may have found the perfect balance, but it was Taika that really put Thor back on the map and really jump started his new found popularity which knows no bounds at this point. Thor has become a shining star of the MCU and the beloved and appreciated character he always deserved to be.

There was plenty of hints at a Thor 4 both from Chris Hemsworth and Taika but these hints where for something down the line and it may take a while for it to happen. I sure hope it does happens, Thor is more bankable than ever and figuring out the right move forward for the character will only add to his MCU legacy and the overall health of the MCU.

Thor Ragnarok wasn't a perfect movie. But it's totally my cup of tea. There where things that could have been done better and some "lows" that the movie didn't deserve but the "highs" peaked so much that one can't really deny the singular vision of a director like TW. Him coming back to do another one, better prepared and not having to stick so much to what came before, would likely be a good thing because he would be able to really go for it and deliver an ever better product.

Well, Taika is obviously one brilliant and very funny dude.

His version of the character may not have been exactly what I was looking for as a fan, but the movie absolutely delivered on adding depth to the character and shaking up the status quo while making an hilarious movie that people loved for many reasons.

Walking out of Ragnarok with a few friends who are not Thor fans in particular, I can say that they liked it more than I did.

I mean, I liked it a lot, but they loved it. So that's definitely a good sign. It was a movie that created a lot of new fans, I think.

I definitely want to see more work from Taika in the MCU, whether it ends up being Thor or something else. If he wants to be involved, I can't imagine that the studio wouldn't want that. Taika's style and sense of humor seem to be a perfect fit, honestly.

Also i kinda want to see Thor hooking up with Captain Marvel.
I mean there was some sort of spark with Valkyrie but she's gone at this point and i think Thor would thrive if he could find in CM some sort of connection or affection. Thor is kind of an emotional mess at this point and it would be great to see him find someone else. Something subtle towards Captain Marvel in A4 would be great.

I think that the reason why so many people loved Ragnarok and found a strong interest in this new version of Thor which continued into IW, was because most of the general audience wasn't attached to a particular way of looking at Thor, something that fans of the comics might be... which in itself is totally legit too.

For the causal audience it was just a breath of fresh air seeing Chris Hemsworth really shine, have that much fun, be extremely funny... in Ragnarok. And those where the stepping stones in the character development which made people care much more for him, making his emotional beats and overall arc in Infinity War that much more effective.

Thor's arrival on Wakanda perfectly summarizes the way people feel about him now. Worldwide and all over theaters people went ballistic when he sowed up. Youtube is full with reactions of people sheering loudly like it was some sort of sport event.

I think it was the haircut :oldrazz:

But agreed, I wasn't a fan of the Shakespearean Thor. Then Ragnarok happened and I was like.... Yea, new fave after Steve and Tony.

Thor and TDW fell very flat for me and were the most boring out of all the MCU entries.

Taikas/Russos Thor is THE Thor for the MCU in my opinion.

IW undoes elements Ragnorock establish like the eye and the hammer.
And you know what, I couldn't care less.

1. The eye was lost as an aside (watch the scene again, no weight is given to the eye knocked clean out of Thor's head) so I have no problem with the eye being given back to Thor as an aside.

2. Thor is synonymous with having a hammer. Thor not having a hammer is like Artemis not having a bow and arrow, Athena without her owl. So I'm glad he once again has a hammer/axe.

Stormbreaker isn't traditional of course, but in the MCU it's an improvement. Maybe we can see BRB one day with a reformed Mjolnir.

Some of what happens in Ragnarok towards the end felt to me like a way to round out a trilogy of Thor films, in much the same way that Iron Man 3 closed out an Iron Man trilogy without necessarily preventing the character from moving on and appearing again later.

At the end of IM3, we have the idea that the armor is almost like a cocoon, something that Tony leaves behind and grows out of. He doesn't need the armor to be Iron Man. We've seen him in armor since then, but that's still an important idea and a logical/inspiring conclusion to a trilogy of Iron Man movies.

Ragnarok is a bit like that for Thor. In the first movie, we have the idea that he is heir to the throne, before he is cast out. A lot of people thought that he might become King of Asgard at the end of the third movie, succeeding his father. Missing the eye is like a symbol of Asgardian royalty (sacrificing it to gain knowledge and wisdom).

All of that stuff happens in Ragnarok, though not in the way that people would have expected.

The movie also shows that Thor is Thor, with or without the hammer. That's a very similar message to what we saw with Iron Man as well. We've even seen it with Cap to an extent, and I'm guessing that the shield will be a big deal in A4.

The star forge scene in Infinity War reminds me a lot of the cave scene in the original Iron Man. It's about Thor building his own hammer, essentially. The hammer means more now, because it's not something that was just given to him, and now everyone understands that Thor is Thor regardless.

That's crucially important for the character to work.

In other news, Marvel Studios is really good at this character building stuff :sly:

That’s what I’m hoping for. If time travel shenanigans bring Mjolnir back, Thor should keep Stormbreaker.

I liked the detail of his eyes being two different colours.

After all the pain that went into getting it, it makes sense for him to keep it.

It's interesting that Rocket gives Thor a replacement eye, and Groot creates the handle for Stormbreaker.

Thor certainly has a strong connection to the Guardians now, in an appropriately unexpected and funny way. That led to a great moment in this movie, but it also makes me wonder if there will be more Guardians/Thor material in the future.

I'm a strong advocate for Thor being in GOTG 4.

Now you have me hyped. That better happen if he doesn't get a 4th movie.

Real talk, look at this post from Hemsworth I know he was talking about IW but this could be foreshadowing.
