I think I can swallow it better because, with them utilizing less of these characters there's less room for error in terms of how they portray them. D&D have favorites and certain characters they prefer and excel at writing over others, so if it means them only using the characters that they know and are comfortable with them it retains a certain level of consistency across the board.

Agreed. Gah, can you imagine how the purists are going to handle this?

Okay, so the official press release states that this is just SOME of the new cast, and in previous years they haven't announced it all at once. So there's still hope for the Greyjoys. But, it lists Trystane as the heir to Dorne, which means...

Arianne is cut.

Or it means he's aged up and Arianne will be younger.

Even if she is cut, it kinda sucks but it also isn't that big a deal. Oberyn has 8 daughters, they can easily have them fulfill Arianne's role.

Is it just me or does jonathan pryce look unwell in that cast announcement video?

He's got to be fairly old now, doesn't he? He didn't look so flash in the latest G.I.Joe either...

He's 67, so.... he could probably look better, but it's not anything shocking. If he was only 50, though....

Looking at it a second time, I think it may have been the top-down high intensity lights causing him to look that way. Those things are hot and you can tell he was sweating and hot and the lights were accentuating a ton of imperfections in the skin. Frankly whoever stuck him under those lights was an inconsiderate ass.

I look awful and sick under some lights especially those awful greenish fluorescents.

Ah well. Maybe they will give more development to the 13 White Walkers and the children of the forest and keep the politics to Lannister vs Martell and Baratheon vs Bolton.

In a way I'm kind of happy. This way the show doesn't spoil the books and they can exist as separate entities.

Honestly, I dont mind it either. I was actually really annoyed at all the new Greyjoys that sprang up, and all the new characters in general he introduced in Bk 4. After Bk 3, it seemed like he was moving into the "endgame" phase of his entire narrative...and instead he introduced 50 new characters and barely progressed the overall plot much at all. That was very frustrating to me as a reader. If they want to trim some of the fat, I'm all for it.

I liked Victarion and Euron, especially since they'd kind of been in the works for a while if you follow all the prophecy stuff, all the way back in ACoK. In fact I don't think anyone has written something as evocative of Robert E Howard's work as GRRM did with the Victarion chapters in AFFC/ADWD. Euron likewise seems like such a wonderfully satanic character that looks like he'll turn out to be a great third act villain.

It was the Sand Snakes and the Dornish that really annoyed me. I get that fans loved Oberyn and that GRRM was somewhat reacting to that, but they were really just "sexy and dangerous" repeated ad infinitum and didn't really add much. So, while I'm ok with them diverging from the books, I'm annoyed that they're taking these three side characters and giving them so much attention in favor of POV characters, especially when I think they could have condensed them into one, or even just merged them with Arianne.

"DB Weiss just said Stannis the Mannis is an amazing character. Maybe the creators have finally decided to stop the hate @GameOfThrones #SDCC"

:lmao:

It just feels kinda ridiculous that they've apparently cut all the cool and important characters yet keep people like Hotah, Yezzan and the Sand Snakes who don't really do anything. Maybe it'll work out. IDK. Part of me thinks it's a good thing because this way we basically get two different interpretations of the ASOIAF universe - a 'what if?' story I guess.

Although there'll still be more casting to come. They said they're filming the Northern storylines later in the year, and last year the SDCC casting video didn't include Mance Rayder, Ramsay or Edmure. Since they've already scouted locations in Spain for Dorne and announced all those roles, I'd say that Arianne and Quentyn are out. There's still a slim chance that the Greyjoys will make it in somehow.

The Greyjoys still have one in-show plot thread that requires some movement on the Iron Islands; Melisandre's blood curse on four of the five kings. Balon's still standing in defiance of the curse, and after Davos actually helped Stannis pull off a coup without much input from the Red Witch, they may have his fate saved up for a plot relevant moment.

I'm thinking of ways they could shorten the Greyjoy plot and there's a fairly obvious one; Stannis captures Yara, and since both of his potential heirs are out of the game, Balon is usurped and killed by Euron, who just seizes the throne with a line about the "Iron Price" and boom, we've got the one eyed wizard we all like. And maybe he is Dany's merc.

Yeah, keeping the Camera That Rides over Arianne is pretty pathetic.

Weiss loving Stannis is a good sign, given that I swear that one of the producers must have had their parents killed by someone named Stanley and diminishing his heroic moments is their proxy vengeance.

Game of Thrones died with season 4, Season 5 onward is just fan fiction!!!!!

I'm sure D.B Weiss is laughing his ass off right now from his throne of skulls, his clawed hand clasped around a chalice full of children's blood.
:hehe:

How do you think the Manderly/Davos arrangement will affect the Battle of Ice?
