i figured salt would surely have to do with the iron islands.
Maybe. The Davos/Melissandre angle is interesting to me, but unlikely to be the case in the book since Davos is nowhere near castle Black in the books.
If it isn't, the Iron Islands could be connected to the water in the legend of Azor Ahai, while the westerlands representing the lion. Though I can't think of any character that fits that.
