The Rise of Skywalker General Star Wars Episode IX News/Speculation Thread - Part 1

Mike Zeroh is a complete charlatan who puts out a ridiculous amount of videos for money and Express rides his gravy train. They're both click-bait frauds.

It disgusts me his videos get so much tractions. People will believe anything.

He's not only a thief, he's a plagiarist who steals other people's content.

Would you like to cite some evidence on that one?

His...very first comment on the movie was that he ****ing adored the script Rian wrote and wishes he were directing it?

Look it up, you have google same as I.

It's almost like you said something off the cuff, and didn't really have anything but a vague quote from before TLJ even came out.

There has been more then a few things said since the release indicating that JJ wasn't exactly ecstatic with TLJ. I even believe that comment you just wrote wasn't said by him, but someone else, which he himself said he didn't say. He defends the brand, he defends a fellow director and he fights back against sexist trash on the internet.

i absolutely hate mike zeroh and i applaud rian johnson for calling his fake ass out.

As for JJ liking the last jedi, well, who knows? I think johnson changed certain things that JJ had set up, and if he does retcon some things, then we know he wasnt that big of a fan of rians choices

I dont know if I've ever heard of the guy, but even if he is a **** heel it's not worth getting worked up over. We've got zero news atm. Even the more absurd rumors can spark discussion and break up the monotony of discussing the merits of TLJ for the umpteen millionth time.

And as far as rumors go this is really no more absurd than any of the others. Ezra is presumably still alive and in the Unknown Regions, and this film is supposedly going to partially take place in the Unknown Regions. I dont think itd be a leap for Rey and Ezra to cross paths especially if she is looking for force users.

Abrams denied the Grunberg quote. In addition...

J. J. Abrams:
“Here’s the thing about Greg [Grunberg]. You put a microphone in front of him, you never know what you’re going to get. I love my friend Greg. He’s my best friend since Kindergarten. I think that my enthusiasm for [Episode] VIII is enormous. I think he also might have invented a couple of the quotes that he gave (‘[J. J. Abrams] read [the script for Episode VIII] and said something he never, ever says, [which was that it was] so good [that he wished he had written it]. He may have said something one time on Lost, with Damon [Lindelof], but I never hear him express regret like that.’) but I am very much excited for, and very jealous of anyone, especially Rian [Johnson], who gets to work so closely with this extraordinary cast and crew. Truly an amazing group. In that regard, for sure, but honestly, I’m also relieved to have gotten the chance to do a Star Wars movie.” (January 13, 2016) (archive)

J. J. Abrams: “I’d be lying if I said there weren’t pangs of regret [about not directing Episode VIII]. Particularly when I realize I won’t get to say ‘Action!’ to Daisy Ridley, or get to work with Mark Hamill in a scene where he gets to speak.” (November 22, 2016)

J. J. Abrams: “Well, it’s certainly something that I’m aware of now working on Episode IX – coming back into this world after having done Episode VII. I feel like we need to approach this with the same excitement that we had when we were kids, loving what these movies were. And at the same time, we have to take them places that they haven’t gone, and that’s sort of our responsibility. It’s a strange thing, Michael [Giacchino]’s worked on things like Planet of the Apes and Star Trek and Star Wars, and these are the things of dreams. Yet we can’t just revel in that; we have to go elsewhere.”(October 18, 2017)

J. J. Abrams: “I had no intention to return. But when the opportunity presented itself to finish a story that we had begun with these new characters, to tell the last chapter of their story, it felt like there was a chance to do it in a way where we could go beyond, and do better than we did in Seven. I learned so much in that movie and I saw that this was a chance to sort of realize something that we hadn’t quite achieved – and part of that was it was simply the beginning of these new characters and their story. The opportunity to sort of take what we had learned, to take the feeling of who these characters are and what they are and give them a final chapter that felt in the spirit of what we begun? It was too delicious of an opportunity to pass up.” (December 6, 2017)

J. J. Abrams: “[I had differences of opinion] all the time [with Kathleen Kennedy], [but she] really takes in what people say and finds a creative way to aggregate and distill the conversation.” “I had a bunch of ideas from the beginning, back on [Episode] VII, of where the story would go, I just never in my wildest dreams thought I would have a chance to execute them.” (May 10, 2018) (archive)

Rian Johnson: “Anything’s still open [about Rey’s parentage], and I’m not writing the next film. [J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio] are doing it.” “With all of these movies, Obi-Wan’s whole speech about a certain point of view always applies, so I think that you have to always think about the context of how information is given. But for me, dramatically, that’s why that reveal at that moment made sense.” (December 31, 2017) (archive)

Rian Johnson: “[J. J. Abrams and I have] spoken, but I’m totally enjoying being an audience member and a fan, and I’m so excited to see where he takes it next because I have no idea. It could go so many different ways, I want to be surprised, I want to be thrilled, I want it to go places that I don’t expect. And I have a feeling it’ll do that.” “Yeah. [Leaving the movie open-ended to go anywhere] was part of my goal, y’know, let’s set the table for the next one so that the easy answers are taken away. How much fun will that be?” (April 2, 2018)

Rian Johnson: “Absolutely, there were conversations going back and forth [between J. J. Abrams and myself], both coming out of The Force Awakens into this and going from this into the next one. In the same way that it was with J.J. handing it off to me with The Last Jedi, now me handing it back to him with Episode IX, I am very much just passing the torch. We had conversations about some of the things I did and ideas for going forward, but the truth is that each one of these films has to come from the person who’s making it. I can’t wait to just sit back, be an audience member and be surprised by where J.J. takes it. I am so excited to see where it goes.” (April 5, 2018)

Not even Rian Johnson expects to not be surprised by IX.

TFA was a beautiful movie. I'm thinking we may get a teaser for E9 with Avengers 4?

If they stick to the schedule of TFA and TLJ we should have the teaser in March or April. They could hold it back until May, but frankly I think they need to get the teaser out sooner rather than later. I think the film will do fine regardless what they do with the marketing, but after Solo and TLJ itd be a good idea to start trying to mend some of the fandoms wounds as soon as possible. Regardless of one's own feelings about TLJ and regardless of whether the haters reasons for hating the film are valid theres no getting around the fact that some of the fandom feels sore after TLJ. A teaser will give the fandom a vague idea of where JJ is taking the story in Episode 9, will give the fandom something to discuss other than TLJ, and could even give the die hard Luke Skywalker fans some hope. Speaking of which, whenever they start the marketing machine I think itd be a mistake to hold back Luke and treat his presence in the film like some top secret mystery box thing. What Rian did pissed off part of the fandom. No getting around that fact. Might be a good idea to use Luke in the marketing to start mending some fences and attract some of those that really disliked the end of TLJ.

But this is JJ and the marketing of his films can be some of the most frustrating unsatisfying BS in the industry so I'm not overly optimistic.

We know when we will have a trailer. We might get something before, but they will have a trailer at Celebration in April.

Was it just me or did Daisy give a better performance in TFA than she did in TLJ?
Well, she actually got to do something in TFA, so... :o

Honestly, Rey in TFA was love at first sight for me. Rare have I just fell in love with a character so quickly. It was like the first time I saw Luke or Superman. And while JJ had a lot to do with it, Daisy was just so likable, no matter what she was doing. It is something missing from Rey for a lot of TLJ.

Also, on another note. Rey has my favorite intro in SW, and maybe film. The directing, the edit, the music, the performance. All of it plays out without her saying a word, until she meets the cutest droid in the galaxy.

This, ALL of this! You know what moment really hit me? When finn and Rey are speaking on the falcon, and they are telling eachother their names. When daisy says "I'm rey", while also having johns beautiful rendition of reys theme in the background, I was immediately attached.

IMHO the Force Awakens is still a great movie and better than all of the trash in the prequels. And Clone Wars :p

I love how Rey went from being a compassionate and protective person with a good moral compass in TFA to only caring about a mass murderer and killing people with a smile on her face in TLJ. :o

I find that an odd criticism considering it's clear that Snoke and Kylo himself were goading Rey into her connection with Kylo, and by the end of the film she literally shuts the door on him. Her belief that he could be turned is the same false hope she puts in her parents coming back to Jakku (it helps that Adam Driver is a great actor and Kylo is one of the best-written characters in the series to make that hope seem legitimate in the moment), and the same reluctance that drove her away from the force initially in TFA. Her arc is about accepting her own role as the hero that will bring the Jedi back and defeat the First Order, having been let down by Luke and her trust being betrayed by Kylo. You have to remember, this is a person who spent most of her life in utter isolation.

I've got a short video I'd like yall to watch even if you hate TLJ, because what the guy says about Luke and his ending in TLJ is a beautiful interpretation and id like to share it. The part I want yall to hear is at 8:32...

Yes, he says the twin suns are hallucinations. I guess he doesnt know that planet does have twin suns. Regardless of that mistake I think it's a great way of interpreting the scene.
