The Rise of Skywalker General Star Wars Episode IX News/Speculation Thread - Part 1

I'm quietly confident in JJ. He nailed the feeling so well last time, after 2 rounds of doing Star Trek like Star Wars. I think Abrams is really good at sweeping you up in the story, even if said story is ultimately a bit ropey. This film is unique in that it is ending the story, a challenge that should curb his magic box tenancies. Yeah, I'm optimistic.

Last Jedi watches like it was made by an old-school OT fan to me, particularly in the way the force is much more strange and magical. This appears to be a point of contention among fans who are steeped in the lore and EU, where more rules have been established I suppose. Personally I really dug it. There are story problems though, wish the script had one last "logic" draft..

Bingo, totally agreed except the last part. The "logic problems" are so easily dispalled, Rian's done most of it himself in the time since release, along with other fans.

While I'm inclined to agree there are criticisms that are overstated, there are a bunch of sloppy things that could have been fixed by a line of dialogue. Holdo, for example is a character I like a lot and had an incredible ending set-piece, but she didn't resonate at all with a ton of people who were confused by her actions. And that's a shame.

I didn't hate TLJ but it seemed like they had no idea what to do with Poe, Finn and Rose.

I really hope they get something important to do in IX but it's a bit too late to do much character development. I've said it before, but I think they need one more movie to set everything up before moving to the big finish.

I'm not really sure where else this would fit, but as this is a sequel trilogy-set experience seemingly set between TLJ and IX, figure here would do fine.

The third video features a taste of the new music Williams has composed for Galaxy's Edge.

So to be even more annoying then usual for a second, I feel like an easy and obvious rewrite fix with Finn actually exist in the deleted scenes.

So I get what Rian was going for with the Canto Bight scenes, and I do really enjoy DJ. I will always love watching BB-8 do his thing there. But the issue is all in total its like 13 mins of mediocre screen time between their arrival and when they finally get on the Supremacy. And nothing really happens that has a lasting impact on either Finn or Rose. The biggest moment is Rose's story to Finn, which you could achieve the same effect else where, without the on the nose kid getting beaten up.

After her first scene, Rose is superfluous. There is no need for this considering her and Finn's plot. She is an engineer, who understands lightspeed tracking. She can't get them on the Supremacy herself? She can't break into a few doors?

With Finn, there is a great idea with the Phasma deleted scene. Take that idea and apply it to the actual execution scene. Have him embarrassing her in front of her men. Have a few of them obviously start questioning what is going on, as Finn stands up to Phasma, even as he faces certain death. Finn represents the "war" of the young heroes. He could have done that better as a symbol, one who could even earn a few Stormies to the Resistance side for the battle on Crait.

****ing loving that new Williams stuff for the theme park. Maybe even more than a lot of his ST themes (though Rey's theme is awesome).

I feel like williams has knocked it out of the park with the ST scores. Reys theme is easily one of my fave pieces of music ever
He has a few real standout tracks in TLJ, especially based around Luke, but I really feel like his TFA score is super underrated. It's my second favorite in the series behind his Empire score. He creates so many strong new themes, while delivering some of his best reworkings of his classics.

Rey's Theme, the Jedi Steps, Kylo's theme, BB-8's theme and the Resistance theme are so good. Rey's theme is only behind Binary Sunset/Force Theme for my favorite piece of Star Wars music.

Startling Luke Skywalker Rumor Will Have You Questioning His Star Wars 9 Return
There has been recent proof that Rey will get a new lightsaber in Star Wars 9. A photo reveled on the official Star Wars Show gave a detailed look at Rey's blue lightsaber, previously owned by both Anakin and Luke. The Kyber crystal is shattered in half and beyond repair after Rey and Kylo Ren's previous encounter. Now a leak describes Rey's confrontation with Luke, who is holding onto his green lightsaber introduced in Return of the Jedi and seen in The Last Jedi flashbacks. It appeared nowhere on Ahch-To with Luke.

In this key scene from Star Wars 9, Luke Skywalker is said to appear in the flesh before Rey. He is not a Force Ghost. There is no blue hue humming around the edges of his transcended body. Luke is also clean shaven in this scene, having lost his Jedi beard. So what exactly is going on?

The scene in question takes place on a Jungle world, a new planet that has been confirmed in recent set photos. Behind Rey and Luke are ancient stone steps leading to several rooms that appear to be Jedi temples. Luke is in his physical form, as though he never died after his astral projection confrontation with Kylo Ren. If he is a Force Ghost, he has learned to control it in a much different way than the previous Force Ghosts we've seen on screen in the franchise.

Luke is holding his iconic green lightsaber hilt, but he has not ignited the glowing weapon. Rey examines the lightsaber. It is speculated that Luke is giving Rey a lesson she skipped out on during their first encounter on Ahch-To. Could he be teaching her how to construct her own lightsaber? Or will we see Rey get a new Jedi weapon never before introduced in the canon that also utilizes the precious Kyber crystals?

Luke's new haircut is described as being shorter than the younger astral projection seen on the salt planet Crait. He is wearing brown Jedi robes complete with white sleeves. It was confirmed that Mark Hamill had shaved his beard clean prior to the Star Wars 9 production start date. But it has also been confirmed that the actor later grew that old crusty alien boob milk stained beard back.

:hmm

After all the **** Rian had to take from fans for the way he handled Luke itd be some funny **** if JJ retconned it so that Luke only Force teleported at the end of TLJ.:hehe:

Tho I do like the idea of keeping the ending of TLJ as is and just having Luke able to manifest a physical body. It would be a damn good demonstration of "If you strike me down I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine." But if that's what JJ does I hope he has a scene where Luke manifests somewhere Kylo is. Thatd be some funny ****. Kylo's talking to Hux or some other First Order personnel and Luke just appears like a boss and scares the **** out of everyone.

If the stuff under the spoiler tag is true, it just kind of proves JJ knows what people have been craving to see in this series. Well at least this person. :hehe:

As to Luke manifesting to Kylo...

There is a rumor that 3 sets have been constructed, that are very particular. All for Luke. One where he meets with Rey, one where he meets with Kylo, and one where he meets with them together.

Kind of sounds like Luke is a marriage councilor...or a divorce lawyer. :funny:

What if that's not even really Luke in that scene and just a vision of him?

I wonder if it doesn't turn out that Luke did die but then discovered that he's able to manifest himself physically when he needs to.

Rey says "Luke is gone" so that seems to imply that whatever happened to Luke, he's not in a form that she can still sense as being alive. And Leia thinks he's dead, too, so it seems unlikely that he's still alive. Rey could perhaps be mistaken about Luke being dead but I don;t think Leia would make the same mistake.

I honestly would love this if its true haha, but if it isn't that's fine as well. I still like the ending of TLJ and how luke whent out, but if JJ changes that for the better, i'm down. I trust in JJ!!

I really do think, whatever happened to Luke, his return will be unlike anything we have seen before. More so then Obi-Wan, Yoda, Qui-Gon or any character to come before.

Oscar Isaac recently said that the story deals quiet a bit with Leia's death and paying homage.

It's got me thinking that the drive of the film's plot will be Leia's death galvanizing the Rebellion and inspiring the galaxy to unite and over throw the First Order. I think it will shake everyone out of an apathy. Her death essentially being a shot of NOS into the veins of the people that werent there for her when she needed her allies the most on Crait.

Considering no one but her brother answered her call last film, I feel like that could be very poignant.

That moment still gets me when she realizes no one is coming. It's one of the most depressing and pitiful moments in the franchise for me. When she was on the transport she tells Poe they could hold out until their allies come and she's so sure they will. (Hell, I think most star wars fans were sure of it.) Leia's banking their survival on her belief that people will come to help. And the beings of the galaxy let her down completely. She lost her son, she just lost the government she fought to establish, she just lost the man she loved, and she still fought on. And when she needed help the most no one, except her brother, came to help. It's the ultimate gut punch and betrayal the galaxy could have offered her after a lifetime of sacrifice and fighting. Itd be enough to permanently destroy the morale of a person. And yet when she and the rebels manage to get away she looks around at the few remaining Rebels on their only ship, the Millennium Falcon, and tells Rey that they have everything they need. And she keeps on fighting until she dies. If that ain't a goddamn hero idk what is.

Theres no better person, no better sacrifice to drive the galaxy to fight to overthrow the First Order.

It’ll have to be!
