The Rise of Skywalker General Star Wars Episode IX News/Speculation Thread - Part 1

I can't keep up with the latest fan outrage at this point. Pretty sure I heard fans begging for years and years to put Filoni in charge-- now because he's made a few things they didn't like, it seems like he's on the fan s*** list. It's just hilarious proof that most fans have no idea what they actually want until they see it.

People also need to accept that the Tony Gilroys (IE serious filmmakers) of the world can deliver something special like Andor, but they're never going to want to be fully in charge of Star Wars. Filoni's skill as a live action director might still be in question, but I'd still take somebody who actually deeply cares about Star Wars and has a long history with it if you're going to have someone in charge charting the overall narrative course. I think he deserves a shot to sink or swim on his own merits.
His live action output is extremely bad. And I think it's important to realize Ahsoka is all him. The animated shows had writer's rooms. With other better writers who have continued to prove themselves. This is before we get into how Filoni handles lore and his own pet characters.

No one's saying Gilroy should be in charge of Star Wars. But the idea of Filoni is really, really bad. He's proven he doesn't understand live action storytelling. Studio heads who are creative rarely work out.

I mean, just look at The Bad Batch season two, which consisted of pretty much nothing but bangers. The best example of this,“The Outpost”, an entire Crosshair focused episode from The Bad Batch season 2, is not only what I would probably consider a contender for a spot in the top five episodes of that series, it’s probably one of the best episodes of Star Wars television period.

And you look at the Mandalorian season three, which aired around the same time, and Ahsoka, and none of those episode even come close to its level. Hell, all of the Omega stuff in season 3 is a better “Andor” pastiche than the actually intentional and blatant imitator, “The Convert”, in The Mandalorian season 3.

When one of your animated projects is better at and actually more successful at writing, filmmaking and telling a good story than pretty much all of your live action projects, save for Andor and arguably Skeleton Crew, that’s pretty embarrassing.

I think it's telling that Mando went off the rails the more it got into Filoni's lore.

“He’s not the Andor guy, he’s the Ahsoka guy”

Some of us would actually call him the Clone Wars guy, but whatever. :o

Somewhat tough to give him that title, since he essentially had 1 season of freedom on it. George is why Clone Wars exists. And George kept making it despite it not being economically feasible.

And it is important. Star Wars isn't just movies and tv shows. There is a whole publication side of Star Wars, that so far, Filoni has had no involvement with.

Its also telling that the majority of the Filonisms were in season 1, probably just before he began to fully transition to live action.

Right from the jump in season two, there is definitely a noticeable increase in quality, and even all of the references and glup ****tos are handled with much better tact and incorporated better into the story without coming across as winking at the audience. Brad Rau and Jennifer Corbett really were a major part of what made the series so great.

His live action output has been rough, no doubt. I certainly don't want Star Wars as a whole to become all about the Filoni-verse and characters. On principle I'm just generally for the idea of companies promoting from within, and giving creatives a shot to run these things. And I'm separating his work as a live action director with him potentially being the creative figurehead overseeing the whole thing which is kind of an entirely separate skillset. So I'm willing to give benefit of the doubt and hope for the best if he gets the gig. If he fails, he fails. I don't think we have much to lose at this point. I also really think that a big downfall of the recent era of Star Wars was just making too much stuff that didn't really need to exist, due to Disney chasing streaming like the rest of the industry. Regardless of who ends up being at the helm, I'm just hoping for quality over quantity moving forward, and hopefully making Star Wars feel more like an event again when it comes to movies.

Ultimately, if Kennedy is stepping down, I just don't know who people suppose should be put in that role. Her tenure proves that even being one of the most successful producers of all time doesn't automatically equate to running a smooth ship when it comes to the considerable pressures of managing fan expectations, various creatives and corporate interference from above with this company. Filoni's already the Chief Creative Officer and an EVP at the company. His influence doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon regardless. So I don't know...if not him, just like, who then, realistically?

From the TROS comic adaptation featuring all The Jedi with Luke and Anakin Skywalker in the center respectively.
