Ghost Rider bumped to Feb of 2007 (Release Date Thread)

that sucks, the movie is done, and the effects are probably wrapped up by now too where X3 is still shooting... a whole year and two months??? They probably could release it Presidents Day 2006 if they wanted too... that weekend sucked for DareDevil

Sure thing about the questions. Although the Variety article already answered the one about the budget! ($120 million is a lot of clams -- you can see why Sony wants to position it right). I'll get back to all those questions tomorrow. I'm nodding off at the keyboard. Biggun, I'll buy you that drink in person one day. Just somebody promise me they'll talk Flamehead off the ledge when he gets the news. Night guys.

I didn't notice that you popped in here last night. Nice of you to talk to us directly about this... this... *snif, snif*.... change of plans. I cried myself to sleep last night. Wait, I mean, I beat people up cuz I'm a man. Yeah, I didn't cry or anything. Yeah... *snif, snif*.

The ledge was lookin' mighty fine last night, I tell you that. How the heck am I supposed to wait another 7 months? What about my countdown thread? There's not enough covers! It's a good thing I'm not a fan of heights or I would have jumped already. BIGGUN, will you look after me?

Ah well, you all know I'm kidding. I can completly understand why they would change the release date and I do have faith in the weekend they choose. It makes sense with all the other movie hype that's on the move these days. We wouldn't want to see happen what all the nay-sayers say is gonna happen. As much as I was excited to hear that Sony had enough faith in the movie to put in such a tight spot, I can respect thier decision to move it. It's just too bad that it had to be pushed to a New Year.

Now, I'm off to figure out how many days it is now. Going from 215 to 400 plus is not going to be easy to look at.

Take care MSJ, keep up the good work that I'm sure you're doing and if you're not back before the holidays, have a great Christmas and Happy New Year.

Hey FH, you could use some pictures of all GR action figures...or even all GR memorabilia to fill up the days...

Yeah, that's a great idea. I have 100 plus megs of pictures saved on my PC here of Ghost Rider. Some of those would be great.

I also have a full set of Ghost Rider cards from the 90's as well. That'll use up 50 days or so... hmmm, what else?

just shoot it to a dvd release

i knew something was wrong when it was december and we haven't seen anything for it

It sucks that I have to wait so long now, but it doesn't mean the movie's bad. They liked it so much that originally they moved it up from Aug to july, so that's gotta' count for something.

As for them releasing it in Feb. it won't be drown in all the big action, summer movies etc.

does anyone else find it really cool that the director talks to us here? Groovy man.:) :ghost:

Well, this was a bit of disheartening birthday news for me at first....but since I have waited EXACTLY 31 years for a Ghost Rider movie, a few more months won't bother me.

I was a bit concerned about next summer's lineup anyway. I can deal.

Very cool of MSJ to stop in again, btw. Dude rocks

If this Movie does NOT turn out to be a "Comic Book Movie Master Piece" with all these damn delays I am going to get myself some Rocket Launchers. Grenade Launchers, Flame Throwers you know the good stuff & gather up an army of pissed off fan boys & we all head on down to Sony Studios & blow everything up. You hear me Sony ?

You better NOT **** this Movie up

MSJ. I give him credit. He knows that people are expecting alot from the visual effects. I give him props that he's doing his best to make it kick ass.

BUt I question Sony's decision. Move it to Spring (March, April) where the market is slightly bigger.

Anytime I think of Feburary, I think of movies like Soul Plane. That's not good. Even if SOny is trying to create a market for Feb, Ghost Rider is not the movie to use as the prototype. Why? Feb is still a graveyard. Put Da Vinchi Code or Superman in Feb then it'll change.

Ghost Rider needs to build up it's mainstream fanbase. I still think March or April is the way to go, and I'm sad and confused.

Mark said that Sony loved the movie. Why do this to Mark?

An note from MSJ on this...

5. What's the most challenging thing you're facing in the post-production process?

To be honest, I just went through it. Getting our release date moved around was tough. Tough emotionally but also tough logistically. I have sound, music, editing, publicity, and VFX to think about. There are a lot of people involved working for me right now that have plans for their next movie already and it's a lot to coordinate when the release date gets pushed like this. Again, it's all for the better. But it's still a pain in the ass!

A few things being said.
Ghost Rider stalls
A quick item. It looks like Nic Cage’s foray into playing a superhero, ‘Ghost Rider’, is being delayed.

Studio reps at Sony tell Variety it’s being moved from August 2006 to February 2007 to get it out of an already overly crowded 2006 schedule. That makes a certain amount of sense, since Summer 06’ is already packed with superhero movies including Bryan Singer’s much anticipated ‘Superman Returns’ and the third installment of ‘X-Men’.

But they aren’t shifting it a week or two or even a couple of months, they’re shoving it into an entirely different year. Worse, the film is losing prime summer release real estate in August to get dropped into theaters in February, a month full of romantic comedies and not much else. Has Sony lost confidence in the film? Do they need more time to work on it? We’ll find out in two Februarys.
Ghost Ridin' on Down the Line
Marvel movie to bow in '07.
by Stax

December 15, 2005 - Variety reports that Sony has shifted the Marvel movie Ghost Rider from its original July 14, 2006, release date to Feb. 16, 2007. The new President's Day weekend slot is part of the studio's attempt to spread their slate over a wider period of time and to ease up the pressure on their revamping marketing department.

"I think everybody is looking at their release schedules in '06 and trying to avoid some of the traffic jams," Sony's Jeff Blake advised Variety. "Seven films for a summer is a lot."

The release date shift, however, impacts Marvel Entertainment, which "must now undo a carefully laid out plan of ancillary tie-in deals."

On the other hand, the February '07 slot gives Ghost Rider breathing room in-between fellow superhero pics Superman Returns (June 30, 2006) and Spider-Man 3 (May 2007).
Don't Panic!!!
Traditionally, a movie having its release date pushed back is never a good sign. However, there are exceptions and, as with Joss Whedon's Serenity which moved from an April slot to a September release earlier this year, Ghost Rider ticks that box.

The word from the production is that this move has nothing to do with the quality of the movie, and everything to do with that crowded summer slate.

In fact, there's a definite upside to the date change, though - it gives director Mark Steven Johnson more time to perfect the FX on the movie, which will involve some truly freaky transformation effects as Cage turns into the flaming-skulled Ghost Rider; while the Presidents' Day weekend propelled Johnson's Daredevil to a big opening in 2003. Will history repeat itself again in 2007? Fingers crossed...

Come on guys, let's be realist.

Sure, I think Ghost Rider kicks ass and I was in love with the material they showed but this just killed my anticipation. They dumped the film right in February.

I hope with all my heart that it will still be good but I am bracing myself for the worst.

Well, at least the hellfire will warm up nicely in the long winter.

i'm sure i'll see this. it's going to suck. three words. Mark. Steven. Johnson. the guy that directed Daredevil directed this. Daredevil was garbage. why should i think his next film will be any different?

maybe M.S. Johnson can be to Marvel movies what Uwe Boll is to video game movies?

Still....if you gonna move the release date....Why not in October? Maybe to capitalized on the Halloween crowds? That way you can sell Ghost rider masks at the same time....make it like a halloween event?

Be fair, Fox had more to the theatrical cut of Daredevil not being as good than MSJ did. Watch the director's cut and see what I mean. MSJ is a great director, and the fact that GR is with Sony and not Fox gives it a much better chance to succeed. Have a little faith.

Besides, as long as we're calling people the Uwe Boll of comic book movies, I'll point the finger directly at David S. Goyer. The man killed the Blade franchise, came close to killing the Crow franchise (Salvation brought it back from death, and Wicked prayer eventually did kill it, but Goyer's City of Angels was TERRIBLE.), and attempted to kill Ghost Rider (have you read his script?). When I heard he was working on Batman Begins, I was almos ready to write it off as a destined flop, until they signed Nolan and Bale.

You know what, though? As much as I hate Goyer, I can't compare anybody to Boll. That man is trying to singlehandedly kill off the entire video game genre of movies...

It really is a shame about the release date being moved back to February '07. But if that lets GR make more money at the box office, then so be it.

The sad thing is this:

GHost Rider could a great movie.

But it'll be labeled by the ignorant as a bad flick b/c of either: The delay or the Feb release date.

Sony, if they were wise, should move to March or April. Hellboy did a good job, along with The Punisher.

I guess I'm not really all that disappointed to be honest. Ghost Rider is a very complicated film with complex special effects, and it's a film that needs all the attention to detail in the world.

I simply don't want a rushed product where the flames don't look real and where Ghost Rider doesn't look like the evil bad ass that he is. Hell, I don't want to wait till Feb 07 either, but it's a must at this point and I believe MSJ will definitely keep true to his word and pull out all the stops.

This isn't Superman, Batman, or Spider-Man where it's easy to make them look realistic and pleasing to the eye. Ghost Rider has a bloody flaming skull and the Motorcycle is from Hell itself.

The longer time period will call for better visuals and a better product in general.

Well at least Marvel is going to have a great year in 2007 with FOUR movies comming out now.

If you have watched the Director's Cut of Daredevil, then you will see that it is a great film unlike the decent semi-mediocre theatrical version :o

This sad news, Ghost rider was one of the things i really was lookin forward to next year.

But MSJ's posts were reassuring, it makes sense to take their time with the effects cause i've always been cautious with the look of GR cause he's gonna require a hell of a lot of effects to make him look so cool!!!

i would try and save you dude but i have to say my broken and battered corpse will already be down there decaying in the morning sun. ill make sure to write a big sign in crayon saying "c'mon down Flamehead, the concretes fine!" lol

but seriously although its tough getting over this bit of news but in the end i hope its for the best. if it means delaying GR for 6 months to help improve its chances of possible sequels down the road ill support it....grudgingly...but ill still support it:o
