Ghostbusters 3 - Part 3

I've only ever known one guy named Oscar, but he was from Haiti. Maybe it's a more popular name there.

So the Ghostbusters will be a secret government agency? So no public busting of ghosts, no scenes like the one in the hotel, no montage of them busting ghosts and becoming huge celebrities. Sounds sort of boring actually, and not all that funny.

This isn't as set in stone as people are claiming. Whenever a new movie is being planned ideas are thrown out, some held onto and some dismissed as they come up with what will eventually be the film we see. For instance, the original ideas for Ghostbusters (that could have been leaked via email if such a thing existed at the time) had them years in the future and acting like exterminators of ghosts in a space age setting. The suits also looked ridiculous. However, after producers and directors got involved it was reshaped into the more 'grounded' paranormal investigator story we love.

The more current synopsis going around is

A story involving two ghost hunters who have a falling out of sorts. They go their separate ways, but investigating the ghosts that would lead them to the villain, still rumored to be the Peter Dinklage serial killer, brings them together to form a team of Ghostbusters again. The mention of them as a government agency is left out. Also, to be fair, the rumor is not necessarily that the Ghostbusters are a government agency, but what I interpret to be more like what we saw in Ghostbusters The Videogame. The Busters are the Busters, but the government, seeking to control and cover up what's going on, become involved and, I don't know, fund them or something.

We'll see.

True but some will be, the glass is half full as much as half empty. Not to mention those ones not on the list that will be a nice surprise and kick start a new franchise we never knew we wanted.

If they can do that, then that's the best possible thing. But it's just the matter of which ones will fail and get what they need to do.

The thing about this movie is that it'll ride or die by it's first teaser.

If it's a meh teaser, it'll have a chance to open fairly big strictly out of curiosity. Otherwise, i just can't see it having that much of an impact on pop culture like the first film. Or even the second film.

I got $100 that says the first teaser will feature an ominous voiceover about ghosts and spirits, then have it undercut with McCarthy trying to run but is out of breath and making a comment about how unfair ghosts are.

That's why I'm hoping that Paul Feig is smarter than that. But not..

That's the wonderful thing! We original fans won't be the one's responsible for this. When the first one opened up it was a really great movie, not iconic. What gave it it's staying power is a lot of the youngins at the time that followed the cartoon and looked forward to its 89 sequel. We bought up the toys, we wore our proton packs, we got into propping, and, thanks to a solid film and an outstanding performance by Murray, it became an integral part of our past and a connection to that moment when we watch it years later.

If this will succeed it will largely depend on the new audience and not us. If my kids love it and rewatch it several thousand times (like kids do) and their friends do the same, years from now we'll know which status it reaches, but it's out of our hands.

We pass the torch and hope for the best. And yes, I know, it's going to be PG-13 and scary. But wasn't the original. I had to walk out during the library sequence and the possession of Dana for a long time because of how much it scared me. And I'll never forget the time I looked at my mom and said, "Are you, Alice, menstruating right now?" When she, in horror, said, "Where'd you hear that?!" I calmly replied, "Back of, Mom, I'm a scientist."

I say that if the Transformers movies can still make billions and the majority here think they're crap, our opinions from fandom might not matter as much as we think based on our future predictions.

Well it's due to the internet too. It's harder to get ingrained into pop culture because there's so many mini-niche cultures created by the inter webs. That's why MTV doesn't mean anything because it's no long the ONLY source for music and whatever anymore. Or how big brand clothes get hurt when teens would rather create they own fashion threads through pintrest.

If you noticed, the main way to get into the pop lexicon is through: TV shows (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones). Social media (Tumblr, twitter).

Say Walter White and everyone knows who you're talking about. In regards to the film world, you got mostly comic book movies so I don't know if they count.

I watched the trailer for Spy, saw elements like Jude Law's involvement and went, "Hmm. Interesting." And then there's McCarthy falling off of a bike or something and I was like, "There it is!"

I really liked Bridesmaids and thought the Heat was decent, but not great. Feig's going to have to do some things a bit different to make a Ghostbusters movie. We need some smarter humor instead of chicks falling over because of the weight of a proton pack. I'm always an optimist (can you tell by my posts?), but Feig's going to have to really put some effort into this film. McCarthy, I've seen, can be more than what we've seen in her films lately, but will Feig bring it out?

To be fair, in Spy McCarthy is attempting to play a more meek type character.

Unfortunately, and this is simply my opinion, but the internet seems to be the favorite voice of cynics. From video games, to comics, to movies, it's rare to come across something that everyone is super excited about. They're out there, but not as much as I'd like. I'll admit that as an optimist I don't post often. My love of Ghostbusters has kept me in this forum. But who really wants to get excited about something and go to a board where everyone else is trying to convince you, you shouldn't be?

I've seen it with Batfleck, and I'm sure the same was said to the cast of Ghostbusters 3, but more and more actors are told to get ready for the pain when they're cast into these roles. Some of the stuff said, not necessarily here, but in other places, is just purely mean spirited and distasteful. Hopefully it fuels an underdog mentality for the director and actors and they really put a solid effort into this film.

True. I'll still Redbox it, but only because with two little kids I don't get out to the movies unless it's one of the big ones (Age of Ultron and such).

Well that's why it's so hard to listen to the fans. I know a few people who work at big entertainment companies, and there are too many voices. You got the haters and you got the hardcore fans who'll love anything and will defend it till the very end. Those two groups tend to have a lot of empty words. You can't please everyone and that becomes a tangible concept when you're dealing with people online.

It's when Daniel Craig was cast as Bond, if the producers were scared by the backlashed, they would've drop him and cast somebody else. Then we would've never gotten his take on the character due to the whims of armchaired hooligans.

Opinions are so fluid, and ever changing. I think backlashes are stupid, and meaningless. It's just a matter of time before people like Chris Pratt gets one. Or my dearest Emma Stone.

Or casting news with Affleck as Batman.

But sometimes, there's weight behind the negatives too. Like the criticisms for the Star Wars prequels (to me) or how Sony is handling Spider-Man is actually legitimate, though some people are trying to deny it for whatever reason.

So is this supposed to be the same world as Ghostbusters or a reboot type thing?

I do like the Prequel and Amazing Spider-man, but I recognize the flaws, some very serious (Attack of the Clones and the Padme/Anakin dialogue still kills me). I've considered myself very lucky because I can still enjoy these films flaws and all as a fan of the franchise. No one's done anything to my childhood, so to speak.

I don't know, I haven't heard anything that has caused me to cry out a Vader "NOOOOOOOO!" with this GB Reboot. It's sad to see the original cast left out, but that boat sailed a long time ago and was further hurt by the death of Ramos, my favorite character. I'm also not wild about McCarthy because of her recent performances, but neither of these guarantee a terrible movie. Just that Feig, the writers, and the cast will have their work cut out for them.

Oh, and I've never seen Breaking Bad and stopped watching Game of Thrones in season 2 (Mostly due to watching too much at the time!). Who's Walther White? :oldrazz:

I meant, there are people who deny the Prequels reputation, making excuses for it, when it's almost a consensus that their reputation is mixed to negative. When major publications like Hollywood Reporter, or even NPR, acknowledge this, it's not opinion but fact. and I'm the guy who defends the crap out of Temple of Doom and Ghostbusters 2. At least i'm not denying that their reputation is mixed.

Indeed, it will depend on how much they can do subtle humor or go for in your face slapstick.

The original had humor in it, obviously but it was played serious towards the actual ghosts and the threat involved. All the original cast were convincing scientists first, even Venkman all be it being the sceptical one. Can this cast pull off that first before laying on the jokes on top of that?

I guess the long wait for the first trailer now holds the only answer.

Ghostbusters 2 is such a fun movie to me. Maybe it's the memory of going to Hardee's for green slime on my sundae or seeing the trailer for the first time, but its still a favorite movie of mine. I've grown to appreciate Temple of Doom after becoming a religion major and understanding Hinduism and the Thugees (spelling?) better. I still might like Indy 4 about the same, but I liked Indy 4. It was no Last Crusade (my favorite) and it just felt slow, but, again, nothing happened to my childhood. I think my biggest problem with Temple of Doom is that it was the only one to truly frighten me as a child.

What gives me hope is Feig's comment about wanting to draw the humor naturally from the fears of seeing ghosts. Sure, slapstick humor can come from that, but it at least seems smarter than a bride trying on a dress after Brazilian food and ending up with diarrhea in the middle of the street.

I don't think that's a bad thing. Temple of Doom dared to be different and I think it succeeded it. I prefer it over Kingdom anyway. I think most people would. Unless they're insane.

I might be insane, then, but I friggin' love aliens.
