There are so many assumptions being made about a film that we know nothing about. I know, I know. That's what we do on the internet. Even still, Aykroyd says he's a fan and we assume he's been bought out (cuz it fits our view of the film where the other, more rational assumption that he's telling the truth, doesn't). It's all women and we assume it's just a gimmick, when we know, as well as Sony did, that Feig likes telling stories about funny women. That's what he said. That's his forte, whether you're a fan of it or not. They don't use the original characters and so we assume that means everything else we love about Ghostbusters can't happen and will be absent in the film. Never mind that the 'science' behind ghost catching from the first two films, games, and cartoons is just as important to the Ghostbusters mythology as Peter, Ray, Egon, and Winston. Why do we assume ghost wrangling and traps will be 100% different when they could be a big link to the films we know?
I'd really like to have some good speculation on the many boards discussing this, but instead of speculation is just extremes. Everyone needs to just hate on this movie and if you're anything ranging from optimistic to a fan of the new Ghostbusters you must surely hate the original Ghostbusters. But I don't fit into that. I'm the builder of prop proton packs, collector of anything Ghostbusters I can find and can honestly say that the films and cartoon (and later games and comics) have been an integral part of my childhood. But... I'm not in absolute terror of this film happening. Instead, I'm happy to see new life injected in a franchise that was running out of steam.
All of this talk of wanting it to connect to 'our' films and the old team passing the torch to the new one, but our biggest problem as fans is that we're so possessive of that torch that we don't want to hand it to a new generation, that the old films might not speak to, and let them choose to love or hate it.
