Ghostbusters 3 - Part 3

Not to open a can of Dune worms but it's not like the Gamergate people are great people either. In fact they're worse and more pathetic.

It's the problem is simplifying a fairly complex topic of gender and race that bothers me.

At least someone gets it.

If there's anything wrong with them scrapping the old continuity, its that the gimmick of the new one (and yes, All Female Ghostbusters team is a gimmick) is more important than the story.

How is an all-female Ghostbusters team a gimmick but an all-male team isn't?

Don't think he's sexist for that.
I think it's kinda gimmicky the way theyre going about it. That seems to be the main draw of it. The fact that theyre women. When it was announced that it will star "very funny women" or something like that made it seem to me that they wanted to prove women can be funny or something. Which is fine I guess.

If I heard they were rebooting Ghostbusters and then the casting came out it just happened to be that all the new Ghostbusters are women because through auditions they were good, then that wouldnt feel as gimmicky as this is.

I really dont care if the Ghostbusters are women, but it did come off as gimmicky to me. It would be the same thing if they set out to make an all black Ghostbusters not just audition people

It depends on the approach because I'm fine with a female Captain Marvel or Thor. Maybe it's because they're great comics. Or a Muslim Ms. Marvel ended up being of the best comics I've read in a while despite the naysayers. So it all depends.

Quit acting like a black GB would ever happen. Ain't gonna be more than one black person in a group going after some ghosts. **** that ****.

If only wanting to cast a certain gender in a movie is seen as a gimmick (or gender-pandering as a couple idiots online have termed it) than I guess Hollywood has been doing gimmicks/gender-pandering for years with 95% of their movies...

I just don't get why it's a big deal.

It really isn't a big deal in reality... but we fans don't like to live in reality. And when we don't like something we'll find whatever we can to justify why others shouldn't like it either.

I just had a conversation with my wife. She's a Ghostbusters fan. Not as big as me, grant you, but a Ghostbusters fan. She's far from a feminist and her friends also, but she said hearing this news made her very excited for the film. She grew up with her guy friends playing Ghostbusters, but she could never be a Ghostbuster. She had to be Janine because girl Ghostbusters weren't a thing. But now she and all her friends are excited to see that there's now Ghostbusters that their daughters can grow up and relate to.

Now I know what someone would say: "Why do they all have to be girls?" They don't, really. Very true. But... why can't they all be girls? Why does a man need to be a part of the group? Why can we not connect to a film, as males, if the male isn't the hero? That's what we ask of most women, isn't it? And isn't it a bit sad that if it was an all male cast that this whole gimmick thing would've probably not even come up? Sure we're still angry for erasing continuity or recasting iconic characters and I'm not saying we'd all be happy at this idea if it was a reboot with all males. But would any of us be saying that no girls in the group is the reason we are against it? Probably not, because that's not the issue. We're mostly strapping men hear who are used to being the hero. It's the way things are. That's how we've been raised.

Yeah, I'm not saying all of us are out trying to destroy a woman's right to vote or working to decrease their pay. We're not hate filled people. Cynical as hell, but not necessarily hateful. But being a sexist doesn't mean you go around slapping a woman's but while you send her off to pour more scotch, it's failing to recognize that there is a problem just below the surface, that there are persons out their who are singled out and assumed to be a certain way because they are a woman or black or Muslim. We don't recognize our own privilege and only act when that privilege is attacked.

Yeah, we don't go around saying, "Let me say something sexist," but we might say, "Having an all girl group is a gimmick (undertones: Because that's just not the way it's supposed to be."

If the voice of the women I've talked to rings true, this movie, if good, could make a lot of money for giving those little girls who grew up in the 80's a chance to be Ghostbuster.

They could have avoided all this 'backlash' had they just created something original from scratch instead of using the Ghostbusters name.

Yea, then you'd have the very same people b****ing "OMG It's just a knock-off of Ghostbusters! Why didn't they just name it that!!"

They're damned if they do, damned if they don't. Feig should just say "F'em" people haven't even seen the damn movie yet. It could be amazing and people will still cry and moan.

It's easy to understand how some people view this project as a gimmick though. It's not because the characters are women, or because there are no men on the team. It's because from the very first thing we ever heard of it it's only ever been talked about as "all female ghostbusters". I don't have a problem with a female team of ghostbusters, I have a problem with that being the only reason to make the film.

It seems kind of sexist to me to think that the gender of the characters somehow equals a creative vision for a film. I would have been ok if they announced the movie and said "this time we are approaching the story from this new direction or new way" or "this time we really want to explore these themes and ideas" and then just announced the cast who happen to be women. Maybe that's more of a fault with the producers than the actual film, but I just don't like how it's come across so far. The gender of the characters is not a new interpretation, whether they are male or female, it doesn't matter, you need more creativity than that to make me care about a reboot. To me anyway it seems like they are doing it because they know it will get this kind of polarizing reaction and therefore people will be talking about it rather than not caring.

I may not like the look of the new Fantastic Four movie, but at least I can respect that Trank and Kinberg have a new direction they want to take the characters in. I don't like it, but at least they have a vision. I just don't get that from this movie. Maybe that will change as we hear more about it, but for now it seems like an all female cast is the only idea they have. It's a sad day indeed when I'm using the Fantastic Four movie as a positive example.

sad day for art the day art is meaningless and open to any change that someone feels like it because.....why not.

....because there are four films coming out with non-white, straight, cis male protagonists? The horror!

One of the things I've been thinking and not saying. Thank you sir!

You are not the first to say this and you certainly will not be the last, but this makes absolutely no sense to me. If you read the interviews you get the feeling that no one wanted to take on a Ghostbusters sequel. I wonder why? They approached Feig and he said yes, but he wanted to work with a female team. Why? Because that's his comfort zone. If any of us watch Spy this summer, we're not going to say, "Look at this female protagonist gimmick!" We'll say, "Why does he always work with that McCarthy lady?"

Letting a director work to his strengths is not a gimmick and just because they announced that it would be a female team before announcing a cast doesn't either. It means they probably anticipated a lot of fanboys would get upset about the news (because we always get upset) and wanted to leak out a few things to set the tone. They said expect funny women and a reboot.

Why didn't they just name it that? Because it's got nothing to do with the original Ghostbusters in the first place. Movies have been ripping each other off for decades so I fail to see what the issue is in creating a new ghost hunting team franchise and giving it its own identity.

There is so much wrong with this post. Heaven forbid women and minorities speak out about wanting to be represented in major movie franchises in 2015 and calling out the clear BS in this "art." Why is that so hard to understand? If an artist is a true artist, they understand that art comes from ALL backgrounds not just one.

All I'm saying is that I don't see a point in more Ghostbusters films and so far they haven't given me any reason to believe this isn't just a cash grab.

There'd be less of them saying that compared to this.

Again, we don't know what it has to do with the original, only that it's a new universe and devoid of the original characters.

And the reason for calling it Ghostbusters is easy: MONEY! A great brand and a symbol as recognized as that sexy no ghost one is guaranteed to give a little umph to the box office. And this is in no way a new thing. Blockbuster summer movies are made to bring in the dough. Sony wants to revive this franchise, especially after the hacking debacle and movies like Amazing Spider-man. It's up to Feig, now to ensure this isn't crap and I doubt making it crap is his goal.

Will he succeed? We WILL find out.

......what????

Great way to spin this around and make about "because they are non-white, straight, cis male protagonists".
Who said anything about that?
I wouldn't like it if they change women to men or black to white either.

The point is that we are now, when it comes to art, in a very ridiculous political correctness stance.

Like i said before, my problem with this casting is the "Bridesmaids" feeling of it, and like same said, it's a gimmick, since the original Ghostbusters were all male, two worked on Saturday Night Live and one was a black male.
All of it is rather stupid, it's almost a joke of a cast.
My problem is not that they are women.

I know I say this in another way in my above post, but it IS a cash grab. I don't think anyone fighting for the movie's existence would argue that. All of these big budget movies are. Sony wants to make money of its brand and they've hired Feig to do so. But that doesn't guarantee a terrible movie. Feig's direction, how well the story is written, and the chemistry of the actors determines that. And of this we know very little if anything at all.

I am referring to your talk about how "the superhero genre is already theirs", as I bolded, not your opinion on this film. Hell I'm not even onboard with this film because of the director without one decent film to his name.

It's easy publicity and it's lazy film making. No, they can't spend the time and effort in promoting an original female team of ghost hunters can they? They've got to dust off a 30 year old brand name and stick in on this film. The irony is people would be far more supportive of this film is the Ghostbuster name wasn't attached in the first place.

Are people just taking drugs on this thread all of a sudden?
Who said anything about women or minorities?

I would dislike if SHAFT becomes a white male all of a sudden, or Lara Croft becomes a man.

All i'm saying is, be truthful to what you are doing.

Well, i stick to it.
Aquaman is a blonde dude, so, there.

I don't understand why they went with an all female cast. I welcome the addition of female Ghostbusters, but it seems like they're disregarding most the fanbase with this move. I going to go ahead and make the assumption that most people who are nostalgic for Ghostbusters are men. Mainly, boys who grew up with the film and cartoon as part of their childhood. The whole point of rebooting a franchise is to cash-in on the name and its franchise. Do they think its going to be successful by ignoring such a large part of the fanbase? I think it would be best to have a mix of both male and female Ghostbusters. The key would be to avoid the obvious cliche having any romance between any of them. Treat them as friends and colleagues, not anything more.

I imagine Sony will be as successful at rebooting this as they were at Robocop.
