I wouldn't mind an approach where the Ghostbusters have franchised out and there are teams located in different cities , like the IDW International title . I'd even have the team focused on in the new film to take place in a southern state. New Orleans , Atlanta , Montgomery, etc . Being from the South myself I can say we are loaded down with urban legends and ghost stories . I mean not every movie has to take place in New York . Between all the Superhero films , action movies , etc let's give the Big Apple a break. Just have the original cast make cameos and make mention of them retiring out due to the loss of Egon or something

I like this - heck, even have a small, quiet mid western town... one of the crew is retired there, they have a mini reunion of sorts and solve, fix an issue that rears its head.

New York is the center of the universe.

Apparently Ivan Reitman was holding a talk at a U.S. convention recently and teased the announcement of a new Ghostbusters film at some event next year called 'Ghostbusters fest'.

No further details other than those at the convention said he 'smiled' and refused to comment when asked if it was a live-action film, and hinted that it may feature the 1984 cast.

Bill Murray probably won't return unless the film is directed by either Wes Anderson or Jim Jarmusch.

Never say never. He returned for the 2016 Ghostbusters (admittedly playing a different character).

You could treat the Old Ghostbusters like the Justice Society. training a new group of younger ones.

He did it because he liked the cast of female comedians and got to play a villain.

I think we'll only see Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson return as their original characters.

Another feature film is at this point, after both GB2 and the re-boot film not anything I am interested in... Now if you told me there was going to be a streaming series on Netflix or the like, ten episodes, taking the adult comic and horror vibes of the original film and combining that with some aspects of the first season of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon with a killer cast and headed up by say... A Vince Gilligan or a Ben Edlund? Now we're talking.

I don't trust Sony. They will f*** it up whatever they decide to do next.

I think they should do what they did with Jumanji and acknowledge the original Ghostbusters but make it standalone.

GB2016's biggest problem was that it was simply too expensive and I think GB done on a $95-110m budget would be more feasible.

Spot on, it made the most logical sense to carry it on and be able to use the car, fire house etc... i always said, they got the cast back, there is absolutely no reason why they couldn't have played the OC.

The dumbest thing the Ghostbusters reboot did was ignore the original. Had they done the exact same movie with the same cast but had it as a continuation with those ladies as the next Ghostbusters, people would have been a hell of a lot more accepting.

Looks like they learned their lesson.

He still did it. If he enjoyed returning to Ghostbusters that much it's totally within the realms of possibility that he'd reprise Peter Venkman for one more film.

I'd prefer a crossover between the 2016 and 1984 Ghostbusters. It would be hilarious to see the 1984 Ghostbusters meet the taxi driver, Martin Heiss and Patty's uncle.

And you know, actually make a funny and entertaining film.

This would have been the ideal way to go, a passing of the torch so to speak.

The only way he would return as Peter Venkman is if Wes Anderson or Jim Jarmusch direct.

Still boggles my mind the original cameoed in the new one as other characters. Jesus.

I was always cool with an all-girl team, that was never the issue. They really should have done a torch-passing situation though, franchised out to other cities, Venkman & Co featuring in little roles giving their blessing & tips and retiring.

Feig was the mistake made, not the cast.

EXCLUSIVE: Jason Reitman is directing a new 'Ghostbusters' movie

Entertainment Weekly has learned exclusively that Jason Reitman will direct and co-write an upcoming film set in the world that was saved decades previously by the proton pack-wearing working stiffs in the original 1984 movie, which was directed by his father, Ivan Reitman.

“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans,” Reitman says. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”

Sony Pictures has dated the film for Summer 2020, with plans to start shooting in a few months.

It’s still too soon to reveal the plot of the screenplay, who the new characters will be, or whether the original actors like Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, or Bill Murray will return. Harold Ramis died in 2014.

So I wonder if they'll revisit the passing the torch approach?
