I think more than anything, this has potential to have legs until Christmas. I mean, we'll see word of mouth but other than Spider-Man, there won't be any other films for the whole family in theatres for a while.
Yeah, can imagine this being a popular Xmas family film.

$4.5m Thursday. In comparison, the 2016 one did $3.4m, which was obviously outside a pandemic. We will have to see where it goes, but real chance it beats projections from $28m-35m. If it does that, with it's production cost and Thanksgiving next week, get ready for an announcement of Afterlife 2 soon.

‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Calls Up $4.5M On Thursday Night – Deadline

Well the good news for them is this has reportedly half the budget of the 2016 one. That's what I've been arguing for Star Trek to do for some time, along with getting better writers and directors.

Absolutely mental Afterlife cost half of what GB16 did considering how TV-quality it looked.

Regarding Star Trek: maybe now that StageCraft is a thing, your suggestion might be feasible.

Yea, there's really not much releasing until NWH to draw out people in droves like this is positioned to. No way West Side Story, Ricardos, or Gucci make any sort of waves right now. Did Disney just...forgo/forget to market Encanto at all?

They have marketed Encanto. It's more of an issue of there not being a real market right now for kids flicks. We will see how vaccination of the 5-11 goes.

Honestly, the verdict's in: Audiences are enjoying the movie, critics have an agenda out for it. Wish we could just pull the plug on this culture war nonsense already.
Do we have a cinemascore?

Likely won't until the end of the weekend, but here, reddit, and twitter look warm to effusive. Point taken, though.

And of course Cinemascore doesn't paint a full story. I'm rather excited and I hope it does well, but I also want to be fair about the general reaction. I to have seen a lot of love and praise going around for it right now, but that's still anecdotal.

I've seen it. Breathe fellow fans. It's pretty good.

GB2 is never really directly referenced, but it is certainly not actively ignored or retconned either

I'm doing what I can to not come off as a blind shill living in denial that a film can't be given a bad review. I unfortunately/annoyingly won't see it until it hits PVOD even though I'm sitting here willing to pay Sony the money to watch it at home (a point that, although we seemingly align a lot on this movie, is not something myself and @DarkKnight88 will see eye-to-eye on here). At this point, I can only project, but when I can look at the first trailer and say "That looks and feels like Ghostbusters", I have a pretty good feeling it's going to stick the landing within reason of my expectations.

A lot of the YouTube channels I follow loved the movie. They do point out that there are a few things that could they could have improved or expanded more on, but as a successor to the original movie it does a fantastic job

Just another 5 hours for me until showtime!

I was wondering if JK Simmons would pop up in this, since he's a staple in all of Jason Reitman's films. His cameo was surprising and awesome.

I will admit that there have been more tepid and mixed reactions/reviews than I expected/hoped to see, but I'm glad to see that people who consider themselves diehard fans of the franchise seem to generally be more positive on it. I still have high hopes for really enjoying it.

Edit:

Stuckmann liked it. :yay:

I loved this. sure, first half was a bit slow, but waiting for a third Ghostbusters film for like 30 years. This was excellent. Loved it, I havent felt this good leaving a movie theatre in a decade. For once it was actual nostalgia, not something fake made only to make you feel bad afterwards. Loved it.

People disliking a movie you like doesn't mean they have an agenda. Just that you like something they don't.

Thanks for sharing. This was directed more to the RT-panic constantly bringing up that score perpetrates.

Except there is, just like there was for the 2016 film. It’s a vice versa thing happening. If you loved one, you hate the other with a lot of these reviewers unfortunately if you look at both reviews, so it’s really hard to gage one way or the other.

I enjoyed it the score using the old bits from Bernstien score were so well used just the part over the opening studio logos had me smiling.
