This is fantastic news. This means that:

1. People are enjoying it,

and

2. families are most likely seeing it.

Could do very well over Thanksgiving and might even had some nice legs come December.

What a troll. This reminds me of his talk about Frozen 2 early on. When he was trying to sell it hard that it's opening weekend wasn't "good enough" and that clearly fans weren't happy. :funny:

Yeah, that turned out to be the highest grossing animated flick of all time (CGI Lion King not included). His articles begrudgingly walking it back still give me wings. :hehe:

The emotion completely snuck up on me. It really felt like a magic trick where I was laughing at the jokes one second, and the next I'm like "WTF I'm a grown man tearing up during a Ghostbusters movie" :funny:

I know right? I think in the end the heart of this movie is what really brings it home for me. And the massive love for Harold Ramis and Ghostbusters in general. I saw a critic headline calling this one soulless. I usually don’t get bother with critic headlines anymore (positive or negative, I just don’t care much), but that one makes me shake my head.

I'm really glad to see this movie doing well at the BO and I'm sure it will have great legs over the holidays considering the strong WOM I've been hearing from pretty much everyone that has seen it and enjoyed it.

It's already exceeded Sony expectations and there's no reason to think it won't go higher. The 2016 reboot is still pretty fresh too and if this makes more than that which it likely will it should definitely be seen as a huge win, especially when it didn't cost even half as much as that movie to make.

The barely hidden contempt for this film dripping off of him, while he has to begrudgingly report the obvious- that this is a no-brainer success story in the making, is delicious.

Mendelson likes to add his biased commentary to very obvious numbers. Sometimes he has random articles that really don't have a point, but hey, I guess he's gotta prove his worth at his job.

It's honestly alarming to me that critics are this out of touch with the average moviegoer on this one. I think it unfortunately kind of highlights how polarized we are as a culture right now, that something that is this good in a refreshingly SIMPLE way is being twisted and contorted into some nefarious movie with an evil agenda (by some, not all).

I get that there's a discussion to be had about how our current pop culture landscape has become very reliant on nostalgia and we're not creating enough (or any) new franchises that will be worth reviving in 20 years. That is a separate convo that I am completely on board with. But as far as soft reboots go, this is exemplary IMO in terms of how to pull it off in a way that feels new, but makes sure to scratch the itch that is inherent in wanting to revisit a franchise as beloved as Ghostbusters. This was not a remake of GB at all. It shares plot mechanics in the third act, but big deal. That's just a movie being consistent with its own mythology, which is a good thing IMO. The first two acts are so different from anything we've seen in a Ghostbusters film that it completely earned it, and the emotional payoff was especially worth it.

This.

If the two directors of the films are so encouraging of each other, you think some critics could get over themselves.

Yeah, I knew already on Friday when leaving the theatre, that if this has a good opening weekend, Mendelson will write the news in his typical whiny way. Had a good chuckle reading the article.

Seems decent given that GB isn’t a big OS draw and some of its better European markets are going back into covid lockdown right now.

I loved just how much this movie felt like not only a love letter to Ghostbusters but also other 80s films I loved growing up like The Goonies and E.T. It was like my early childhood fandom got to play Friday night.

YES. I cannot wait to see this movie again with my wife. E.T. is her favorite movie of all time, with Goonies and the original Ghostbusters not being far behind in terms of her childhood faves. She has no idea what a treat she is in for.

Straight from Jason Reitman himself for anybody that was still wondering.

Good. Considering I watched for the first time in a long time last night, and probably liked it best. :ninja:

I seriously forgot how much of that movie was what Ghostbusters was to me as a little one. I must have watched it way more then the first. Probably because it was all over cable at the same time as Batman 89. :hehe:

You're not alone there. It's probably still my favorite Ghostbusters movie and was definitely my preferred one as a kid. No apologies. :word:

This is a relief. When I saw it, my theater was near empty so I was bracing for really bad numbers.

See I thought that was actually quite in character. I imagine Egon was a very private person keeping his work life and personal life separate

Seems like he kept his personal life separate and isolated as well. Also keeping a collage of your daughter growing up doesn't suddenly make you a good dad either.

Did this gross more than the 2016 reboot?

No slightly lower. But this film also had a lower budget and came out during a pandemic year. The 2016 film almost cost twice as much this one did. The rural setting and largely unknown main cast likely helped keep costs down.

What I have read that the budget was something like 75 million for this. So the numbers it made are really good, and like already pointed out, the this is released during a pandemic. Really happy for the strong numbers.
