Absolutely.

And at a lowered budget after the budget for Answer the Call ballooned way too high.

The after credits on this does open up a huge world of intriguing possibilities if Sony is willing to give the sequel a higher budget.

What was the alternative? A real GBIII with the remaining cast? Highly unlikely, specially with Bill Murray's unpredictable attitude. A new quartet of young-ish faces like Seth Rogen and Adam Scott? That's another GB Answer the Call misfire.
There wasn't a lot of options on the table, to be honest. They did their best with what they had. What's interesting is that it does set up the franchise to go to new places with part of the original cast.

I just want something that isn’t a Stranger Things rehash.

I've always thought a streaming show would be great way to continue the franchise. Even more so than another movie.

Yeah. I always thought a Stargate SG-1 type of vibe would work great as a tv series. Venkman and Oneill are the wise cracking leaders

Found this interesting article on possible sequels to GB:A on the Giant Freakin' Robot website:

Directed by Jason Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is proving to be the miracle creation the franchise needed to rise again 30 years after Ghostbusters 2 hit the theaters. But what next? Apart from being a rousing success (and earning close to $200 million at the box office), the film has teased storylines, possible arcs, and raised questions that can only be answered by Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2. So, what is does the future of the franchise look like?

Here is everything we know about Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2.

Has The Sequel Been Greenlit?

Not yet, but given the largely positive response Ghostbusters: Afterlife has garnered as well as its impressive box office collection, it is highly unlikely that Sony Pictures will say yes to a sequel. Also, both Reitman and many from the film’s cast have shared their willingness to return for Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2.

What further heightens the chances of the sequel being greenlit is a major producing deal Sony has signed with Ghostbusters: Afterlife co-writers Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, according to Deadline. Sanford Panitch, President, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, has called Reitman “a world-class, signature storyteller” and a “visionary filmmaker.” They are now looking forward to many films from the duo that are already in the pipeline. Sony’s complete trust in Reitman and Kenan, as well as this deal, paints a hopeful future for Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2.

The Mystery Plot Of Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2

Sony Pictures may take its sweet time to make Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 official but John Reitman has revealed that he already has many plans for the sequel’s storyline. In an interview with Uproxx, the director was questioned about the changing Ghostbusters’ logo on the Ecto-1. In Ghostbusters II the logo is a ghost holding up two fingers but in Afterlife, it reverts to how the logo was in the original Ghostbusters film wherein the ghost is only holding up one finger. This hints that Egon changed the logo sometime after the events of Ghostbusters II.

Apparently, this was not a mistake and was actually a planned plotline that was not covered in the film. Reitman has shared that he plans to cover this question as well as many other ideas in a potential sequel.Vigo the Carpathian
Reitman has also revealed that after bringing back Gozer the Gozerian, he plans on revisiting the franchise’s best villain i.e., Vigo the Carpathian in Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2. During his appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reitman teased that the sequel may see the comeback of Vigo, the major force of evil in the 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters II.

By the end of the film, the sinister painting of Vigo had vanished and replaced with the one symbolizing the four Ghostbusters protecting baby Oscar. But according to Reitman, there is a “lot of time and opportunity for Vigo The Carpathian to make his return.” In case the director does bring Vigo back, he plans on basing his return on the fact that his painting in Ghostbusters II was not the only one. “Maybe, he’s riding a horse in another one, maybe, impaling someone in another one,” he explained.

The Cast Of Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2

Ghostbusters: Afterlife introduced new cast members like Carrie Coon as Callie Spengler, Finn Wolfhard as Trevor Spengler, Mckenna Grace as Phoebe Spengler, and Paul Rudd as Gary Grooberson. It also brought back original cast members Bill Murray as Peter Venkman, Dan Aykroyd as Raymond “Ray” Stantz, Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore, Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett, and Annie Potts as Janine Malnitz. While the new additions are yet to voice their opinion on Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, two actors from the original cast have expressed their willingness to reprise their respective roles in a sequel.

In a chat with USA Today, Dan Aykroyd had shared that he wants his character Ray and Bill Murray’s Peter to be killed in the next film and join the ghost of Egon Spengler in guiding the new Ghostbusters. And even if they don’t die, he wants the original Ghostbusters to be present in the next three sequels. Speaking to RadioTimes, Ernie Hudson has also expressed his desire to return for Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 and confirmed that given the note on which the third film ended, his character’s inclusion in “what comes next” is definitely confirmed.

Meh I wouldn’t say that article said anything meaningful.

Pretty much all the ideas listed there fill me with dread. I really liked the parts of Afterlife that were new and the sequel badly needs more of that, not more references and friendly ghosts.

Saw it for first time last night and was simply EVERYTHING I hoped it would be. Absolutely adored it, loved it.

Very much 'built' for the age group of the originals, who are now Stranger Things fans (I count myself very much in this group) at 47 and 9 when the original came out.

The casting was spot on, the nods and 'feel' were handled well, without being 'over-powering' or threatening to 'take-over'.

The links to the originals were subtle enough for it not to be simply a 're-make' and those last 30 minutes were 'hit in the feels' amazing.

The music cues really hit home, and the little moments were you heard Ecto-1 scream into action again were just 'goose-bumpy'.

The biggest 'plus' for me, was the link they made back to the original with the feelings between Egon and Janine which they built into the first film, very nicely, which always pissed me off with the sequel when they had her put alongside Loius as a potential and seeming 'couple' and broke up Egon and Janine.

It was a 10/10 for me.

IMO, people should be more open to series-continuations of movies. There are a lot of movies where doing a sequel is really hard, but doing a *spinoff* is possible, especially if the primary goal is to expand the mythos.

Eh, I don’t like when movies spin off into a series. Some have their place if there really is *a lot* for story to tell. But usually these shows meander. It loses a bit of the mystique. I don’t know if I want to see a Ghostbusters series personally. I’d prefer the time and focus on a grander singular film sequel. Ghostbusters is still a rare non-comic book franchise for the big screen. Keep it special.

If done well I'd be all for a series actually. It could achieve similar effects to the originals on a fairly modest budget. Ghostbusters is pretty dry, low-key affair, closer in tone to today's television than today's blockbusters. You don't really need big stars, you just need funny people. Cast a new group and invent some creative ghosts for different cases. I think that could work very well. 'What We Do in the Shadows' is the closest thing to it I can think of.

It surprised me learning it made 300 mil ww... for some reason I assumed it was more... so used to the marvels etc making billions.

Awesome news, loved Afterlife! Hope we get a bit more of the originals this time, especially more of Sigourney Weaver who sadly only had a cameo.

Also hope they scrap the idea to use Viggo again, give us a new villain please.

My wants for a sequel:

1. No Bill Murray, but Weaver, Aykroyd and Hudson should come back and have a bigger role
2. Kids come back, but obviously set in NY
3. Completely new villain, but have Viggo teased at the end

Is there a particular reason people don’t want Murray back?
Inappropriate behavior on the set of his current film.

I think if Murray comes back it wouldn't be for anything more than a cameo anyway, much like in Afterlife. They more or less hinted that Venkman was basically retired with Dana but Ray and Winston were more willing to get back to active field work.

Plus allegations of previous “inappropriate behaviour” in other films he was in over the years have once again resurfaced on social media sites such as Twitter.

His antics on the set of What About Bob? have been public knowledge for years yet people still hire him. See also: Christopher Nolan casting Casey Affleck in Oppenheimer. This is the way of Hollywood.

Murray has always been known as a curmudgeon. What About Bob, his feud with Chevy Chase (Chase an actual a-hole), Lucy Liu on Charlie’s Angels, his fallout with Harold Ramis on Groundhog Day. This isn’t news.

We’re in a different world today of course, but Murray is a legend so if he wants to come back, I’m sure they’ll still put him in. I don’t think Murray wants to come back though. I think he did the last one so he could be at peace with Ramis.
