Jack Klugman's Son Upset by Cory Monteith's Emmys In Memoriam Tribute
by Sadie Gennis

Jack Klugman's son is very upset with The Odd Couple star's exclusion from the special Emmys in memoriam tribute, which includes a special honor to Glee star Cory Monteith, who died of a drug overdose in July.

Adam Klugman told The Los Angeles Times, "They're celebrating this self-inflicted tragedy instead of celebrating the life of my father, who won three Emmys.... Cory Monteith never won an Emmy."

In a statement, Emmys executive producer Ken Ehlich defended the decision to include Monteith: "Every generation of television viewers has its favorites, and when we decided to expand the 'In Memoriam' segment to remember certain individuals, we wanted these pieces to be representative as well. To a younger generation, Cory Monteith's portrayal of Finn Hudson was highly admired, and the producers felt that he should be included along with the four other individuals we have singled out."

Adam, however, remains unpersuaded. "Let's call this what it is. They're doing this because they think they're gonna get a younger generation of viewers to watch.

In addition to Monteith, the special in memoriam will also feature nods to James Gandolfini, Jonathan Winters, Family Ties creator Gary David Goldberg and Jean Stapleton. Klugman will be honored in a group remembrance that will air during the Emmys live broadcast Sunday (8/7c, CBS).

Jack Klugman enjoyed a successful career for over five decades, during which he earned Emmys for his leading roles in The Defenders and The Odd Couple. He died in December at the age of 90.

Do you think Jack Klugman should have been included in the special memoriam?
I can see what he's getting at, but dismissing another actor isn't the way to do it. He has every right to be pissed off about his father's exclusion, but pissing and moaning about Cory's inclusion is just going to make Cory's family and friends feel the way he does right now. It's just a *****ey thing to do.

This is stupid of the Emmys, though. So many actors died this past year, why single out a select few. Stop being showy and just do a damn "In Memoriam" sequence for everyone.

I agree with Sawyer. He has a right to feel that his father has been slighted, but slighting Cory in turn isn't a classy way to make his objection.

I don't think they should be singling anyone out for "special honors". Just include everyone in the "In Memoriam" sequence, that way it's not like they're setting anyone above anyone else.

Agreed. They aren't the only show to have questionable exclusions from their "In Memorium" segment (the Cory Haim exclusion from the Oscars' sticks out), but I don't think I've seen a large group left out in favor of a select 4.

That's just ridiculous.

I agree that it's unnecessary to single out a few people, but they aren't completely excluding everyone. There's still going to be a regular "In Memoriam" from what I understand.

not only that... but i really can't get over the fact they completely glossed over Larry Hagman, and didn't do a special segment for him, but did for Cory.. I'm fine with Cory being one of the one's talked about, but after watching the In Memorium... Larry Hagman was the only one in the list of those who've passed who should have been spoken about considering his 2 major iconic television roles...

Demi. :atp:

I forgot I have a reason to watch this season.

Glee - Episode 5.03 - The Quarterback - Synopsis
Posted by Ben at Wednesday, September 25, 2013

In the wake of Finn’s sudden death, former members of New Directions return to McKinley to remember their fallen friend. While a stoic Mr. Schue encourages all the gleeks to “memorialize him the way we do everything – by singing about it,” some of the kids find the exercise more cathartic than others. At the Hudson-Hummel home, Kurt, Burt and Carole sort through Finn’s belongings and what begins as a somber occasion blossoms into a poignant and much needed family moment. Meanwhile, Emma grows concerned when she believes Will is so busy taking care of others that he’s not allowing himself time to grieve; Santana struggles with using her “*****” mask to hide her fond feelings for Finn, and has a run in with Bree, McKinley’s "New Santana"; and following a heart-to-heart with Coach Beiste, Puck honors Finn’s memory by making a life-changing decision about his future.

Considering Kitty was "the new Santana", shouldn't that make Bree "the new Kitty"?

I thought Kitty was more or less the new "original recipe" Quinn, what with the self-righteousness and the Bible-thumping.

Kitty was the new Quinn....just not pregnant, manic-depressive, and in an out of a wheelchair.

Because God forbid a staff of 1,000 writers create original characters instead of some m.r. crap like making everyone "the new _________".

Welcome to glee. The new Santana even looks like she could be related to Santana.

And Puck joining the army to honor Finn is stupid and lousy excuse to get rid of Puck.

That's a terrible reason to join the army. It was terrible when Finn did it to honor his father, and it's terrible for Puck to do it to honor Finn, plus it just puts out a moronic message.

The character recycling is really ridiculous at this point.

When Blaine transferred to McKinley they basically retconned him into Kurt 2.0.

Sebastian was like a gay Jesse, and then Hunter was just like Sebastian.

Unique is treated like Mercedes 2.0.

Kitty was Quinn 2.0 with a dash of Santana. They started out making Jake Puck 2.0 before he proved to have no personality whatsoever so now he's just Marley's boyfriend.

The writers keep trying to convince us Marley is Rachel 2.0 even though she isn't, and even more laughably trying to get us to root for "Jarley" as Finchel 2.0.

Sam was introduced as Finn 2.0, but then became this inconsistent amalgamation of character traits. Now Ryder is like Finn 3.0 and Sam 2.0.

And now Bree is Santana 2.0.

What's next? Will Bree get a dim-bulb blond cheerleader girlfriend? Will the next newcomers be a flamboyant effeminate gay boy with perfectly coiffed hair and eccentric designer outfits, bowtie and hairgel-obsessed boyfriend in tow? Will we get a new Asian couple and a nerd in a wheelchair?

Any reason to get rid of Puck is fine by me.

Considering he's only an occasional guest star anyway, was there really a need to create a contrived storyline to get rid of him?

He's essentially already been gotten rid of.

Mark didn't even think he would be returning until this happened.

Shouldve just left him in California cleaning pools.

Puck is my last favorite character. Shame to see him leave this way.

I know they don't want to many Lima kids in NY but Mercedes should be visiting ny than spending her time in Lima with a bunch of newbies. Not as if she gets any meaningful time with Artie/tina/sam.

I'm past it. At a certain point, with this show, it'd be like watching 24 and complaining about terrorism.

Haphazardly recycling characters is Ryan Murphy's brand of terrorism. :o

Well we only got 1 season left anyway so at least we wont have to deal with 3.0s coming in.

Ryan Murphy in Season 6: "We're very excited to be introducing a cheerleading coach as our new antagonist, because that's a character type we've never really dealt with before!"
